He's no longer a shy, quiet, southern kid. Get to know the next captain of the Steelers' defense: Lawrence Timmons.

On one series at Tuesday's OTA, new Steelers starting inside linebacker Ryan Shazier (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=6935925) was upending Maurkice Pouncey (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=6981413) on one snap and then on another he was flying over to the sideline to make up for a missed tackle by cornerback Cortez Allen (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=6980424) and hold the explosive Antonio Brown (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=6980455) to a short gain.

But on the next series, Shazier is getting blocked easily by one grown man -- David DeCastro (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=6980513) -- so that another grown man -- LeGarrette Blount (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=7570603) -- can rip off a chunk run right through the gut of the Steelers' defense.

Those will be the ups and downs of a first-round pick who's going to be free to make plays from coordinator Dick LeBeau's playmaking position, the mack, because the old playmaker, Lawrence Timmons (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=6981471), has moved his considerable skills over half a click to the buck, a playcalling bastion of team tradition that's been home to captains Levon Kirkland and James Farrior.

It's now home to the guy Mike Tomlin likes to call "Law Dawg.".......

Great article. Thanks for posting!

It still feels kind of weird to think of Timmons as the wise old veteran of this linebacking unit now. In the grand scheme of things, I hate to say this but, Foote going down last year might have been a blessing. Timmons was forced into play calling duty, and now with a year of it under his belt I have no worries about his ability to handle it. I love that he is embracing his role as a leader. When you're surrounded by such larger than life Steeler greats like a James Farrior and a James Harrison, I can see why Timmons was more comfortable as the quiet role player. But leaders are often born out of necessity. I have tremendous confidence in this kid… I mean, man.

Good read! I always liked Timmons for how he let his play do his talking. Glad to see him embracing a leadership role on defense now.
