I knew "Pawpaw" wouldn't let his adopted "son" go. Like it or not, the old man wanted Ike to stay.

Don't really have a problem with it until it becomes a detriment to the team, and in Ike's case it has.

how much less is the question now

Watching him get torched again for less money doesn't change the fact that he's going to be occupying a valuable roster spot getting torched again. I love Ike, but the fact is he needed to be put out to pasture after 2012.

We better be prepared to start scoring 30+ on offense.

You are right , will not argue it ....

the best we can hope for is they kept him to help tutor a youngster in the system and is used in dime situations or something of that nature and the price tag is LOW

Maybe Ike will move to FS for a year. It worked for Rod Woodson once he lost a few steps.

My guess is that Ike is about to become a backup to one of the FA cornerbacks out there.

it worked for Woodson because he still had ball skills , Ike never had ball skills

He better not be automatically granted a starting role based solely on his tenure with the team.

I wonder if there are two options on the table.

1) Sign someone who can outright outplay him so that we can cut him
2) Find someone who can mature and grow through the season until we can finally bench Taylor (or light a fire under his butt)

If so..this might just be the FO not burning any bridges until everything plays out.

Also hoping for drastic improvement in our pass rush, which would help mask his rapidly deteriorating coverage skills.

Good point - it's not like we have an heir apparent-in-waiting on the roster at the moment.

word is Ike just saved us 4.5 million in cap space , not the 7 most of us had hoped for but it is a significant pay cut and gives us some jingle to sign a player or 3

1-year deal. $2.75M - good deal for steelers...

Not a bad deal considering the other option was roll with Cortez Allen and William Gay. Not saying that Ike is all that he once was, but he knows the scheme, works harder than anyone, calls out team-mates when needed, organizes off-season workouts, etc.

2.75 million for all the intangibles and maybe one last year of #2 corner play? I'll roll the dice on a career Steeler for that.

Sign a FA, plus draft a guy. Ike still the mentor to Allen and the draftee, plus he's a pretty good backup, plus he should get some field time when we run press coverages.

Have not done the film work myself, but I have read where Cortez Allen took over much of the duties of manning up on the #1 WRs as the season wore on, allowing Ike to play zone coverage. Ike played much better in that role ending the season than he did when he was asked to handle the opposition's top guy.

In essence, it may mean he is losing some of those physical gifts (quickness) that allowed him to be the #1 corner, but I just won't buy that he has fallen so far he cannot outperform William Gay. Ike once played off zone all the time and was very good at it. I doubt he has forgotten how to play it. I would expect that to be his role now instead of being asked to shadow younger, faster guys.

Congrats Ike

Although the Steelers reportedly were talking to at least two young cornerbacks scheduled to become unrestricted free agents Tuesday – Alterraun Verner of the Tennesse Titans and Nolan Carroll of the Miami Dolphins – they have little interest in either.

An added benefit to Ike Taylor returning

PITTSBURGH -- Ike Taylor returning for one more season provides some stability at a position where the Pittsburgh Steelers are perilously thin.

It also provides the perfect opportunity for the Steelers to draft two cornerbacks, something they did in 2011 with mixed results, and turn them into Taylor’s shadows

The bigger question is whether this is the year the Steelers finally use a first-round pick on a cornerback, something they haven’t done since 1997 when they took Chad Scott with the 24th overall selection.

Steelers general manager Kevin Colbert and coach Mike Tomlin are at Michigan State's pro day today, according to the Detroit Free Press, and their presence will further fuel speculation that the organization will target Darqueze Dennard with its first-round pick.

hometown discount alllllll the way

Ike Taylor will enter his 12th and perhaps final NFL season by agreeing Monday to a $4.25 million cut in his salary for 2014. Scheduled to earn $7 million in the final year of his contract, Taylor accepted a cut to $2.75 million. No years were added to his contract, which expires in one year.

I really, really love Ike. For all kinds of reasons. Yeah...I know he can't hold onto the ball. But, boy he can shut'em down. He was a huge contributor in all our successes. Yeah...he's done with all that. But I do think he has a little more to contribute......even if it's just teaching the young guys what can happen when you have heart, loyalty and work ethic. If anybody deserves the honor of that one more year to retire a Steeler, it's Ike Taylor Rooney.

I would beg to differ. The problem is when a CB misses an assignment it's pretty obvious. But what happens when a DL-man misses an assignment? It's one hell of a lot harder for us observers to notice it and determine the results of that missed assignment. If a DL-man misses and gets totally out of a play that was his area to protect then it's a lot more likely there is a LB or DB to help out and prevent that long run for a TD. Or there is a DB there to pick try and stop the throw that shouldn't have even happened if the DL got to the QB correctly. But you in the end it doesn't go for a TD because there were others behind him to cover up the mistake. When a CB such as Ike, who often was left on an island makes even a minor mistake it can result in a TD because there is no-one there to protect him.

I still think Ike is one of the better coverage guys in the NFL, he just isn't good enough to cover the opposing teams number 1 receiver 1 on 1 any more. I'd still take him over a lot of other starters in the league. I'm not sure I can same the same for the beard, even though I love him as a player and Steeler.
