not surprised since worilds came back, but i will wait to see if it happens

So that is about $14 million in cap space, with potentially more from a Worilds deal and releasing Ike?

Gotta figure they think they have a chance to sign someone.

Also, traditionally the Steelers get these moves "right" but will be interesting to see the stats at the end of the upcoming year for Worilds vs. Woodley.

Steelers will release LaMarr Woodley

Woodley, the highest-paid defensive player in Steelers history, will be designated as a post-June 1 salary cap casualty and will be available to sign with another team starting at 4 p.m. ET Tuesday, according to the source.

A seven-year veteran, Woodley was scheduled to make $8 million this season, which would have been the fourth year of a six-year, $61.5 million deal signed before the 2011 season.

The 29-year-old Woodley was a productive pass rusher during a four-year stretch from 2008 to 2011 but struggled in recent years and lost his usual starting position of left outside linebacker to Jason Worilds, moving to the right side this past season

Article I saw said it was just over $10 million from Woodley this year. Add that to the $4 million or so that the Brown restructure just provided and that was how I guessed in the neighborhood of $14 million.

That is actual money. Weird. I don't remember what it is like to not have to release someone to sign draft picks.

I think Woodley will provide $8M in cap relief in June...maybe that's when they work on a deal for Ben?

This makes it sound like Woodley is clearing out his locker as we speak, the Steelers get the money now, and only the league office cares about the June 1st date?

Lord only knows. I was told that I wouldn't need an accounting degree to be a football fan.

Also from the more fun with #'s department in 1993 the Packers made the largest offer to Reggie White in free agency. The terms of the deal -- 4 years and $17.2 million. That is not per year, that is over the life of the deal. 20 years later, I shudder to think what Reggie would get on the open market.

more numbers

Steelers will release OLB LaMarr Woodley.

He'll be designated as a post-June 1 release, allowing the Steelers to spread out his $19.76 million in dead money over the next two seasons.

The move clears $10.57 million in cap space. Woodley's release was a fait accompli after the Steelers re-signed OLB Jason Worilds. Woodley still has some juice left as a pass rusher, but has become increasingly injury prone, and will turn 30 in November.

Steelers to release LaMarr Woodley

The Steelers will not have to pay the remaining $25.5 million in salary on the $61.5 million, six-year contract that Woodley signed three years ago. His salary cap hit of $13.59 million in 2014 will be reduced to $5.6 million, but he will count an additional $8.5 million against their 2015 cap.

I wish him well, but it was time for him to move on. Glad the Steelers FO made it happen. I know many of us on this board thought it would be the right move. Hopefully we can acquire a couple of solid FA's before the draft now.

He and Chris Johnson can talk about how they got paid and then stuck it to the man. However, the people that gave them that advice should have told them they needed to do more than just show up. What a big waste of talent and bad attitudes.

Lumping Woodley in with Chris Johnson is a bit unfair. Woodley produced when he was healthy/on the field and never, at least that I am aware of, threw his entire coaching staff and team under the bus as an excuse for his lack of performance. Let alone behave that way on multiple occasions - the way CJ2K did.

From what I have heard Woodley was a decent team-mate, worked hard, etc. Plus he didn't have a dumb nickname like CJ2K.

Just put on too much weight about 3 years ago and his body couldn't take it.

My only concern is that he winds up somewhere like New England and reverts to his early 2011 play when he was looking like a possible candidate for DPOY - there was a reason the Rooneys gave him all that dough in the first place.

It would be in keeping with this team's recent luck that it would happen - with the added "bonus" of him landing in New England and Belichick being ballwashed as a "genius" for the millionth time...

CBS Sports' Jason La Canfora reports many in the Steelers organization expect free agent OLB LaMarr Woodley to sign with the Titans.

The Titans are transitioning to a 3-4 defense under new DC Ray Horton. Horton was on the Steelers' defensive coaching staff for Woodley's first four seasons in the NFL.

At 30 years old and injury-prone, Woodley can't be counted on as an every-down starter but would be fine in a situational pass-rushing role. Mar 10 - 10:57 PM

This is only REALLY slightly (alright, very slightly) on topic, but does anyone else here get the sense that the Steelers training staff kinda sucks?

I get that football is a violent sport and that injuries are going to happen. A lot of them. But the continual muscle pulls suffered by this team seem extreme.

For instance, Woodley and Polamalu both seem prone to soft-tissue injuries that can linger. Why was there never an effort to determine the cause and design a player specific preventative program? As an example from another sport, the Phoenix Suns for years put Steve Nash back together on a weekly basis with duct tape and magic dust. I remember this was a reason Shaq signed with them at the end, hoping the training staff there could rehab his back.

Anyway, just a thought. I mean guy pulls something walking in to the facility, maybe you want to check in to that.

Our strength and conditioning coach is considered one of the best in the business. He's won all kinds of awards and seems to be highly regarded. Look him up, I was a little surprised given our general opinion on the matter. Perhaps it's just the players. I really don't know anymore.

A training staff is only as good as the player that wants to put forth the effort. When Woodley tried to bulk up instead of staying lean everyone said that would be his demise. Low and behold here we are.

To Mojouws point, I believe Polamalu changed his off season training because he was getting those injuries.

He was able to finish the season, so there is merit to the position of questioning the training staff.
