I read an article that said Verner should get 12 mil. a season. That is a lot of cheddar.....

Get a real nose tackle and one stud Safety and we can get away with having CBs that come a little cheaper than that.

You could go all day with the deficiencies. Get a 3 down ILB, Troy goes back to wandering the field. Stud CB helps edge rushers get time to get there. Nose tackle makes it all go. We need everything on D, lol.

Alterraun Verner spoke highly of Carnell Lake during his time as his position coach

Jon Gold of Inside UCLA connected with Verner at the time, asking him how he felt about Lake's sudden departure.

JG: What do you credit Lake for in relation to your own game?

AV: Oh man, the guy is very knowledgeable. Just the mentality of attacking practice, the mentality of going into the game, the mentality of playing the position. He did it at the highest level and did it really well. He brought that to his coaching, but not only that, he’d listen to you as a player and not just dictate to you.

Verner should get more than that, so if the Steelers were in contact with Verner's agent, it was likely nothing more than simple due diligence in an effort to determine the current market for cornerbacks.

Neal's right.

Just curious what you guys think the most this team would shell out for a player in free agency would be to fill a big need? 5 - 6 mil / yr?

I don't think we can spend the cash. Plus when was our last big "splash" in FA?

Shields signed for just under $10 mil a year. Vontae Davis and Verner will demand the same kind of money.

I wouldn't want Davis at half that , and as much as I like Verner he is not worth that either IMO ...but this is what you have when the cap is stagnate for as many years as it has been and takes a sudden jump

It is what it is. .. the reality is that the market demands teams spend big for top cornerbacks. Its a passing league.

As mentioned above, if Shields got $9.75M a season, there's no way we can afford this guy. The going rate for free agents just doubled.

$5M-$6M is probably about right for what we can afford. Who knows, maybe after the bonanza of the first couple days, we'll be able to add someone who fell through the cracks.

Too rich for the Steelers to sign. So either they draft a guy or they sign someone from the scrap pile and hope he pans out. Of course, we're going to hear all offseason long about how "cheap" the Rooneys are, even though they spend to the cap every year.

So they may wait until the dust settles and see if they can fill a need at the right price.

they could but honestly who is out there that is worth having that will not cost a bunch ... best bet is sign guys to fill holes / backup jobs and draft the future and live with the growing pains while they get exp ...

maybe Walter Thurmond , really good from the backup role , when asked to play play he did ... he probably has as much upside as anyone that would be affordable and may not draw a ton of attention in FA ( could be one of those guys we like to target ) where people say we signed who ? and then say dayum where did he come from .... and still rather young just coming off his first contract

off topic but another guy I would not mind seeing in for a visit and cap friendly deal is Anthony Collins ( who I was pissed we did not draft at the time ) solid swing tackle who can also play guard ...

We draft Bruce Davis about half a round prior to Collins being drafted and Tony Hills and half round later , both of those guys never amounted to squat but Collins has been stellar every time he walks on the field

Verner would be a quality "get" and could be the "splash" Colbert referred too in his combine press conference. With Verner, you have the Carnell Lake connection from his college days and you have his former Titans head coach (Munchak) on the Steelers staff as offensive coordinator.

That's lotsa connection, lotsa recommendations and hopefully lotsa sway in his decision. We could basically swap him for Ike Taylor and money/cap wise break even. Add Verner and someone at Safety like Delmas as Free agents.
Along with the top three draft picks of:

#1 - Aaron Donald
#2 - Benjamen/Moncrief
#3 - C.J. Fiedorowicz

and we are sitting pretty.

I actually want this to happen for more than football reasons. It would simply highlight how ridiculously off-base most sports "analyis" is. Can you imagine how hard the pundits will have to spin and back-pedal in order to go from the Steelers being mismanaged out of contention by Colbert (couple of sites recently put him in the bottom 1/3 of GM's in the league), totally lack cap space, and have an aged defense wholly lacking play-makers.

Signing the predicted highest $$$ UFA not named Jarius Byrd would simply highlight that anything is possible each NFL off-season. And that these guys who make their living doing this stuff have the brain-power of a worn out 9 volt.

Steelers can make a competitive offer to Alterraun Verner

What's it worth? Five years, $40 million total value, $22 million guaranteed - $12 million signing bonus, $4 million guaranteed salary in years 1 and 2 of the contract and $2 million in year 3.

That's the price for a friend, so to speak. He would be able to get better offers from teams with loads of cap space, but will another team offer him much more than that?

All hypothetically, of course. I mean, the Steelers don't pursue free agents on the first day...right?

Marquee NFL team. All the talent in the world(on offense). Let's hope he really REALLY likes Munchack and Lake.

By the way, in case you missed it, it appears Ike has indeed restructured!

Although they reportedly were talking to at least two young cornerbacks scheduled to become unrestricted free agents today -- Alterraun Verner of the Tennessee Titans and Nolan Carroll of the Miami Dolphins -- they have little interest in either.

Because the Safety draft class this year is not that great, and we are in position to pick up a legit CB in the first round. Makes sense to go after safety in free agency. (But yea...I would have loved him to be on the team)

Maybe Lovie Smith showed him tape of Charles Tillman and told him that could be him? No tax in Florida means more contract dollars in his pocket? I don't know. He certainly took a lower deal than the #'s for Shields and Talib would seem to indicate he could have held out for.
