In recent years, the Steelers’ annual game of salary-cap limbo has included a restructuring of quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (http://www.rotoworld.com/player/nfl/1181/ben-roethlisberger)’s contract. But after three straight years of converting salary to signing bonus in order to drive down cap numbers, Roethlisberger has only two years left on his contract.

Spreading out his current contract over more years would probably clear more space than Troy's or Heath's restructured extensions

I wonder if they would actually do a contract extension with him this offseason. I don't think we'll see it happen this year.

If they do a contract extension, it would probably be at or near that same $18M number, if not higher, given the way QB salaries have shot up since he signed his current deal. The $12M-$13M average we're paying him now is a relative bargain. So I don't see a way that extending his contract will help our cap situation, unless we were to do it in a way that reduces this year's cap hit to $12M in exchange for making it $24M in a later year. We've been down that road enough times, and no thanks. Time to take our medicine on this one from all the restructures; just glad we're able to fit it and not be $20M over the cap for once.
