Ravens running back Ray Rice's arrest and charge of simple assault-domestic violence in Atlantic City will be reviewed by the league under the NFL personal-conduct policy, according to a league source.
Under the policy, NFL commissioner Roger Goodell has wide discretion on punishing players regardless of how legal situations are adjudicated. Goodell once suspended Pittsburgh Steelers star Ben Roethlisberger during the 2010 season for six games, which was later reduced to four games, after the quarterback was investigated for an alleged sexual assault in Georgia. Roethlisberger was never charged with a crime.
NFL discipline can include suspensions, fines, banishment from the league, a probationary period where conditions have to be satisfied before reinstatement or a formal reprimand.
...Rice has spoken with coach John Harbaugh about his arrest to explain what happened over the weekend in Atlantic City, according to a source.

Wonder if Goodell is gonna use darts or a modified roulette wheel to "pick the punishment" this time around...

I guess that's where the "wide discretion" part comes in. Of course, Aldon Smith wasn't all over the airwaves or front pages for the stuff he did, was he? "Protect the shield" (but only if the media makes a huge stink about it).

Yeah, but you have to remember the guy was basically "suspended" for 5 games by going to rehab in the middle of the season. The league was pretty clear that they would've done something if he hadn't missed a third of the season on his own.
I could go on for days about what a dumbfuck Aldon Smith is, but also don't forget that half of the things he was charged with are only "crimes" in California, the home of retarded laws and people who don't have a clue what they're doing when it comes to guns. They actually have a law that says that if you're a California resident, you can't buy what California considers "assault weapons" - which means basically anything with a trigger - even in other states where they're legal. Seems like the lawmakers here are competing with Smith for the Biggest Dumbfuck of the Century Award.

The NFL turned a blind eye to him and just let him do whatever he wanted. A player is not supposed to be allowed to dictate their own "punishment".
It is Smith's second such arrest, the first having occurred in January 2012 in Miami Beach. That charge was later reduced to reckless driving."Discipline for a second or subsequent offense is likely to be a suspension, the duration of which may escalate for repeat offenses," the league's substances-of-abuse policy states.
DUI at almost twice the legal limit where he crashed his truck into a tree, drug possession, felony weapons charges, under investigation for shootings during a party at his house, etc. = no penalty from the NFL = BS
yeah after seeing the video this morning this doesn't seem like the small altercation we heard about the other day

Ravens Expected to Take Strong Stance Against Ray Rice Punching His Fiancée Since He Averaged Only 3.1 Yards Per Carry This Season
Baltimore Ravens running back Ray Rice is facing charges in Atlantic City related to an incident last weekend in which witnesses say he knocked out his fiancée at a casino with an uppercut to the face. A video has now emerged showing Rice dragging the woman’s limp body out of an elevator.
Things are complicated further by the fact that Rice averaged a career-low 3.1 yards per carry this season, making it hard for the Ravens to know exactly how to feel about him knocking out a woman.
“If this was the Ray Rice of two or three years ago, when he was arguably the most productive running back in the NFL, we’d be standing by him 100-percent,” said Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome. “We’d be asking for privacy and stressing that things didn’t happen as they seem. But his production has gone down back-to-back years and he’s 27 now. He could be through his prime. Considering all that, maybe we take a strong stance here against violence against women or whatever and cut Ray from the team.”
The Ravens faced a similar scenario with the team’s former star Ray, retired linebacker Ray Lewis, when he was involved in a double murder. But head coach John Harbaugh says the circumstances were very different.
“I wasn’t here back then,” he said, “but I remember how the Ravens gave him unwavering support throughout the whole thing, even though it was a pretty gruesome scene, which he fled from in a limo, covered in blood, and then destroyed his clothes and lied to police. But Ray was only 24 then and was coming into his own as a player. Unfortunately for our current Ray, Ray Rice, he made the mistake of doing crime as he was exiting his prime, not entering his prime. That makes it much easier for us to pretend to sincerely care about our players’ off-the-field behavior.”
Before the Ravens make a decision on Rice’s future with the Ravens, he will be asked to meet with team officials.
“We want to put him through a workout to see if he still has what it takes to produce in this league,” said Newsome. “He’ll also probably want to tell us his side or whatever to the Atlantic City thing. But we don’t care so much about that. Even if he is somehow completely innocent, if we determine he’s no longer good, we’ll still use it as an opportunity to cut him and maybe even recoup what we still owe on his contract. Moralities clause or something.”

if the Ravens cut Ray Rice he will cost them 14.2 million against the cap and be down a starting RB , they would then also have to reinvest a rather high pick to get someone of Rices Talents and from my eye on draftable backs this year it only points to 1 guy if they want a Ray Rice clone and he wont be cheap likely a 2nd round pick and that is Bishop Sankey ...
so as a steeler fan that is exactly what I want to see happen , force the ravens to eat a bunch of cap space for a guy they part ways with and at the same time spend a high draft pick to replace him ... kind of like hitting the daily double

It will certainly be interesting to see what happens with Rice. The video on TMZ doesn't show him actually punching her, just dragging her out of the elevator. (Unless there's another video i missed) I would think that it would be pretty easy for his camp to spin this into something else. Certainly not right, but I could see this happening.
Please understand that I am in no way condoning what he did. In my eyes, there's a special place in hell for men that beat women.

In some rape cases, can't charges be brought against the perpetrator even if the victim doesn't want to press charges? Would it be the same way with assault? Do you think that his fiancee would not press charges?
Either way, I personally feel that if the NFL is going to "take a stand" against Big Ben for supposed crimes he didn't even commit, then they should certainly take a stand with Ray Rice, especially when there's VIDEO EVIDENCE.
Seems to me that this would sure tarnish the shield if Dick face Goodell doesn't do anything, repeat offender or not.

They can still file charges regardless - "the people vs. ____." You're right that the main reason why a lot of rape cases (and domestic violence cases) don't go to court is because the victim won't press charges or won't testify ... but I think in most cases, that's because they essentially have no case if the victim refuses to be involved. If they have the whole thing on video, they can still file charges if they think it's worth pursuing. I've actually even heard of domestic violence cases where if it was bad enough, they've filed charges even without that, just photos and the police officer's testimony, though that's probably only if someone was beaten half to death.
It will be interesting to see whether they think it's "worth pursuing" on their own.

I find it ironic that now raven fans were always busting our chops over Ben's off the field stuff. Now their team has some major damage control to do over this situation. It really bugs me that worthless Roger gave Ben the 4-6 game ban without even a charge. Roger better lay the hammer down but, we know that probably won't happen. I think with the video of this Ray rice situation some kind of ban should happen and, since Ray Rice has that bulling campaign in Baltimore. I know this is his first legal problem but, the shield has been tarnished. Again we know how inconsistent worthless Roger is that worries me about this. It's nice to see there fan base in damage control not knowing what to say and, half of them embrassed and, some defending him. It does not look good but as usual the NFL network hardly spoke a word about this.
