On running over Urlacher ...

I knew it was him,” said Bettis. “I was able to bang off of him and use his leverage against him. I knew it was going to be a big hit. I just tried to play off of it and keep those legs churning. He didn’t let go, but I’ve made a living off of carrying people – that’s why they call me The Bus.

Bettis belongs in the hall of fame.

In the latter part of his career how much better did he make the O-line look than it really was? While Pittsburgh has for the most part had very good WRs, QB not so much until Ben came along.*

I thought Maddox was better than most people give him credit for but did we really have the O-line for that kind of QB? Plus still, I won't kid myself that Maddox was great but I think he was more than adequate especially after some of the other post-O'Donnell stuff...

The wrinkle, to me anyway, is that if you're going to qualify Bettis' HoF enshrinement with caveats about his quarterback play, then you can take that argument and say that Hines Ward unequivocally belongs in the HoF too. He spent his first couple seasons not even starting really and then the first half of his productive career with trash at QB and TE, and the latter half of it with trash at OL... and still look at what the man accomplished. (Mark Bruener was a great TE but the man was a blocking TE, not a "makes other receivers open" TE...)

I think Bettis has earned a spot without that asterisk.

Former teammates weigh in on why Jerome Bettis should be in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.:

off the field, and why he should be a part of the HOF Class of 2014.
Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/ben-roethlisberger/54dda34e-9e43-4c57-9397-1143ddced5d6/)

“He is one of the best of all time. His numbers, he has a Super Bowl. What he has done on the football field is easily deserving of Canton. He is the Pittsburgh Steelers.

“He was someone you knew put in the hard work, he wasn’t going to make mistakes, you could count on him. He was a proven guy, a veteran who always went hard.

“It was more than just how special he was as a football player. What he did on the football field spoke for itself. The leadership, the type of player he was. It was the locker room, off the field, the community. When I first got here it was the time the WWJD bracelets, What Would Jesus Do, came out and I would laugh when I was doing things and think, What Would Jerome Do. He is someone I tried to mold myself after. That is what made him so special, outside of the talent he had on the field.”

Wide Receiver Hines Ward:

“You look at his size and tenacity. To be that size and have quick feet was just amazing. Sometimes you found yourself as a teammate watching like a fan to see him get through a hole, side step somebody, run over somebody and then get up and do his patent ‘The Bus’ dance. That is what made him such a special running back. You don’t see many guys be able to maneuver the holes and run somebody over...........

Hoge on Bettis: 'He was as rare as they come'

Merril Hoge shakes his head and can only imagine what it was like to be a defender with Jerome Bettis coming at you and the task at hand being nothing short of impossible…stopping him in his tracks.

“I remember meeting up with him one time and I gave him a hug and I was like ‘Oh my gosh,’” said Hoge, who played for the Steelers from 1987-93 and is now an NFL analyst for ESPN. “To get your arms around this dude was not easy. And him running with a full head of steam…oh my gosh what a defender had to deal with. He was a unique beast. To get your arms around him would be a large task and with a full head of steam, it would be so much harder.......

He was the complete package. Nice guy in interviews. A bruising RB on the field. A fiery leader in the locker room. The whole team was in his palm in 2005. I still remember those post game locker room scenes w/him and Porter leading the team in cheers, during the playoff run. It gives me goose bumps every time I see them. Canton will be his next stop. It would be cool if him and Hines get in the same year. (I know Hines will probably have to wait a while)

Who's on the ballot for next year. I'll be honest I can't argue this years class. All great players. Especially in a league that has out the running back on the extinction block. Damn please don't let Bussy get snubbed out year after year.

Aeneas fucking Williams? Really?

The HoF voting is getting to be almost as a big of a sham as the Pro Bowl.

he was a worthy candidate , problem is they all are and just so much room , the fact Jerome played most of his career as a Steeler and would have went in as one hurts him as we have a lot of players in the HoF and as much as they will deny it that is part of it ... they want the hall to represent the league so if it is even close a team with less will get the player in and ours will not make it , its just the reality of the thing ....

otherwise explain to me why LC is not in , why Donnie Shell is not in both should be eligible as old timers by now but they should have went in long before now ....

it is supposed to be about the best of the best if the above 2 and Bettis do not fit that category I am just not sure who does , thus Politics have its role in the thing its the only possible remaining answer ...

but somehow I am ok with that , not over joyed by it but ok ....

Oh, I agree with the "too many Steelers in there already" notion. IMO, that's what kept Dirt Dawson out for so long when he should have gone in on his first ballot. And I am glad that they finally put Ray Guy in there. But no way should Aeneas Williams have gone in over Bettis. No way.
