I remember hearing rave reviews about this kid before he got hurt in Cowboys camp.

If he still has sub 4.4 speed, he definitely fits the recent mold of Steelers' receivers.

Tunch's son in law :clap2: , hopefully Tunch's work ethic has found its way into this kid , if so he could be a diamond in the rough

Coale may turn out to be nothing, but I think the Steelers should continue to do things like this. Traditionally, they were able to acquire talent cheaply (@ least in draft cost) by playing a defensive scheme that was in the minority around the NFL. That has shifted and 3-4 edge players are no longer available consistently at a "depressed" mid-round or later cost.

The CBA through its institution of a rookie wage scale has created another avenue for teams to amass cheap talent. Look at the Seahawks roster. See all their amazing cap room (primarily because they have a staggeringly cheap QB) as they signed all of the pass rushers to ever hit the open market last off-season. Now project that roster into 2016 or so. Maybe as early as 2015. Some serious cap crunch is coming.

If a team can not take advantage of one those two paths to access cheap talent, then you have to take serious gambles on the UFA market. Read an article a year or so ago that was lauding the Pirates (due to their relatively scarce financial resources) for taking a risk on what the author termed "high beta" players. As I understood that, it meant players with a large chance of being a "bust" but also a potential to wildly exceed their "cost".

I see Coale as someone with that potential. If he is healthy he could potentially more than adequately fill that 3rd or 4th WR roll. If he isn't, so what? Basically a free flier for camp.

It's great to see them make a move like this. No risk, high reward.

If we can find a couple of guys like this who work out, even as role players, that's exactly the kind of thing we need to fill the holes in the roster that will inevitably be left even after the draft and FA.

The next Tyler Grisham

no no, he's white and quick so he's the next wes welker.

Speaking of Grisham, im still finding it hilarious that people blew up his potential to be somebody because of his 1 career reception for 14 yards
