View Full Version : Heath Miller's worth

So I'm having a conversation with a guy on twitter about Heath. He does not believe he is worth 7.5m. I think he is absolutely worth the money. I also think that if asked, Miller would take a pay cut to help out the cap woes. The man I'm speaking with thinks he should be cut and re-signed for around a million if he wants to stay with the team. No one will want an aged TE with no pro bowls under his belt he says.

What say you SU? How valuable to this team is Heath?

Well, for starters, you could remind your friend that Heath has been to a probowl. And yes....he's worth it. I bet he would rework his contract as well.

Good god no

Very valuable and worth the money, imo. It's pretty clear to see the impact he made on the game when he returned….even not being 100%. I do feel we need to draft his replacement this year tho. Dwins pick on CJ Fiedorowicz seems to be the right guy.

There aren't many people on this team that I consider irreplaceable, but Heath Miller is definitely on the list.

Release Heath? Hell no! Doesn't Twitter guy remember what it was like this season when Heath was out?

That's exactly what I asked him, and he just made his feelings known that the turnaround wasn't thanks to Miller. At least that's what I presume he's gettin at.

I do agree that his eventual replacement comes this year in the draft, but this guy doesn't want Heath around as a groomer at 7.5 mil. I feel like he thinks he's washed up. Lololololololololol.. And I did remind him that he made the pro bowl last season. I don't think he cared.

And I guess, according to him, Heath is only good in the Steelers scheme. Where the hell is the rolling on the floor laughing emoticon again?

Yes sir! And while we're at it, let's trade Ben and go ahead and move Antonio for a nice mid first rounder.....

I love Heath Miller.

However I don't think he is worth 7.5 mil.

I realize their are intangibles and compensating factors but I'd guess his value is more like 5 million, maybe 6.

Yeah, but that number was partly because we kicked the can down the road with his contract. In 2014, his cap number is almost $10M thanks to our old friend the restructure; my guess is he'll be the highest-paid TE in the league:

Is Heath an invaluable member of this team? Absolutely. Can we afford a $10M cap hit for him (and five other players)? Not a chance. Hopefully we can figure out a way to juggle things so he stays a Steeler, and put Woodley and Taylor on the firing line instead.

Our defense is in a bad situation with older high paid players and young developing players and not alot in between.

Do you think there may be a benefit to keeping Taylor if the price is right OR moving him to another position?

I get you rpoint but I am just concerned with the void when Taylor leaves.

I like heath a lot but I don't think releasing him is totally out of the question especially if we save over 7 million in cap space. Is he worth 7.5 million based on his career he absolutely is, but is it worth it to the steelers to get younger and more athletic at the TE position while saving cap space? It wouldn't shock me.

cutting one of your best weapons in the passing game whether it be from a receiving aspect or blocking so you can find another receiver is liken to cutting off your nose to spite your face ... the only reason he is so expensive is because you made him that expensive via restructuring the deal you offered him to begin with ( not paying your end of the deal you made in the manner you promised to pay it forcing money into later years )

he may not be worth 7+ million a year , but he has earned that money and lets be honest where are you going to find another guy that can step right in and do everything Miller does for you in their first year and do it as well as Heath does for any amount of money ? .... sure you may find a better blocker ( your work is cut out for you IMO ) you may find a better receiving target ( again best of luck there are some but not many ) but where do you get one as good or better at BOTH for less money ?

outside of C.J. Feidorowitz ( and he wont be as good his first year in the league ) I can't name you anybody on the planet regardless of the $$'s

I'm concerned too, but those are the kinds of choices the cap forces you to make. But I don't really consider Taylor an indispensible part of the defense anymore. It's a loss that would hurt, that's for sure, but unlike Miller, he's not really playing at an "elite" level anymore. If there's one thing you can't do, it's pay a guy top-five money when he's not one of the top five at his position, and we've got at least two of those guys on the team. If we had to choose between keeping Miller at $10M a year or Taylor at $10M a year, it would be a no-brainer. Actually, we kind of do have to choose that.

As for how to fill the gap .. I don't really have the answer. A month and a half ago, I would've said draft an elite DB, but I'm not sure if our draft position allows that anymore. A better option would've been "manage your cap better and keep Keenan Lewis," but that ship sailed a long time ago. More likely it ends up being Allen and Gay and cross your fingers, or maybe we convince Taylor to come back at a lower salary as a stopgap.

Trim his salary by $3 million but don't cut him
