Small Logan made big impact

LATROBE — Stefan Logan may be one of the NFL’s tiniest players. But he likes to think of himself as an electrifying, big-bang kind of a guy.

On the Steelers’ roster, he’s listed as a wide receiver. But catching passes isn’t his thing. He’s a kick return specialist.

At just 5-foot-6, Logan wants to make an impact with positive plays while returning punts and kickoffs.

“That’s my job,” Logan said. “And I’m looking forward to it.”

I was extremely impressed with the Little Man last season and am really looking forward to seeing how he moves and grooves (hopefully into the EZ a few times!) through opponents' ST's and down that field! :tt02:

i like him alot he was the real bright spot on ST last year, BUT i think it is going to be hard for him to make the roster.

I'm rooting for him, but he's going to have a tought time making the squad again. It's just so hard to justify a roster spot for someone who just returns kicks.

Last year, though, he was THIS close to taking a few of those kicks to the house. Hope we keep him on the team, he's worth it.

I agree with the just being a return man and taking up a roster spot.
I hope they can throw him a few packages on offense during the preseason to see if there is more that he can bring to the table than just special teams work.

Interested to see what he can do under a new special team coach and system.

He just doesnt return kicks, i wish people would quit saying that (just as bad as saying, oh, well Casey Hampton only plays one spot/etc, lets get rid of him too or something)...he's also on ST coverage teams...he plays WR...and even some RB (picture a poor mans Darren Sproles). We didnt get to see much of the WR/RB parts last yr until the end of the season they mixed him in on a handful of plays. At camp he's getting a lot of time at WR also...I think he can easily make the team...they made room for him last year, and they can do the same thing year.

He does just return (and cover) kicks. And although he technically is listed as a WR, he is not talented enough, or big enough to play the position. If he could do anything more, he would have played more for sure. Sure, he got a few end-arounds his way, but it's nothing significant enough to keep him for that position. It's not the same as saying Hampton just plays nose tackle, because a nose tackle is in for almost all defensive snaps. Logan might be on the field for 10-15 snaps per game, and he will be a return man for half of those. He's not a stellar cover man; he just plays that position because he can. He's not involved with too many tackles on ST.

All I was saying is that it is difficult for someone who only plays ST to make the team, because, let's face it, he's not going to have much of a role in our offense. And when you have capable return men on the squad who are also capable of playing other positions (Randle El, Wallace, etc.), it doesn't make it any easier for Logan.

Again, I say I'm rooting for him to make the team, because he's a valuable asset, but it is hard to justify keeping a spot specifically for a return man.

I was a big fan of his last year.

I haven't looked up all the numbers, but I have a feeling that we started our drives at least 10 yards better than the year before, and that was his first year with questionable blocking. Would you give a spot to a WRY that catches a 10 pass on every series?

That may be over simplifying it a bit, but If he is our best returner I have no problem giving him that roster spot.

i posted a bunch of stats in the original logan thread-

In 15 games as the Steelers' primary kickoff returner, Logan didn't have a return of less than 24 yards.

he had 12 ST tackles. thats pretty impressive considering he is tiny, his priimary duty is returner, and there are 9 other guys on teams competing to make the tackle.

he had a tackle in 75% of his games. rookie 3rd round defender keenan lewis had zero.

 I remember hearing his name called more than enough times on special teams coverage tackles as well, Tony. I think with a new ST coordinator, he can only get better. The coaches also said in the off-season that they wanted to get him some more touches on offense as well which will improve his worth to the team. I'm telling you, big mistake if we let him walk. I felt like every time he fielded a kick-off there was the possibility of something explosive happening. I haven't felt that way since Randle-El's early days with the team.

Agreed it seemed like he was getting tackled by his shoe strings on alot of occasions. If anyone deserved to take one to the house it was him. Hopefully this year will be the year for him to do that.

I find it annoying, too, but it's not that the admins want to boost up the hits for the other sites, it's that they don't want to get hit with a lawsuit for copyright infringement. Savvy?

webpages make money by selling adverticement spots like tv networks make their money by selling airtime for commercials. the more veiwers they get, the more they can charge advertisers to air the commercials. its the same principle for webpages. everytime someone goes to their page its counted ( hits ) the more hits they get the more appealing they are to adverticers, so naturaly they are going to get pissed off if people are stealing their material and taking hits away from their site. if an entire article is posted here and 100 people reads it here, thats 100 hits they just lost.

You may want to check out this thread, and the link there. In that link, at least one forum was sued for posting articles in violation of copyright laws. And um, business comes before the Steelers. Heck, that's even true of the players on the team.

Last year I was hoping that Logan can be utilized as a poor man's Wes Welker. Quick, shifty, elusive....seems like a no brainer but there must be something that I am missing that BA sees where this is not practical. Seems like Manny Sanders could have the same roll with bubble screens, etc.

» The highlight of afternoon practice had to be when Stefan Logan hauled in a pass from Charlie Batch during an 11-on-11 session. Batch floated the ball directly over the head of a streaking Logan, who laid flat out to catch the ball.

I think Logan's size may have something to do with not wanting to over expose him on the field. I still think if he is the best return guy we have, we need to find a way to keep on the roster. Starting position will be so very important to this offense, particularly in the first 4 games.

Yes. With his size he's not going to have the advantage most times, but even if he only gets in on offense 5 times a game, he would force other teams to account for him knowing his speed, in itself, is a threat.

I think he's also well aware of the other return guys we have in camp, so he knows he's got to "prove it". I don't think he has a problem with that. He sounds like a fighter... and I hope he sticks.

Huh. I take back what I said, then. Guess he was better than what I remembered.

Anyway, I want this guy to make the team again. I really think a good return man is a valuable asset. My only point was that it's hard for coaches to justify keeping a roster spot for someone who just plays special teams, when there are players that can play other positions, as well. And, unfortunately, Logans a little too small to be a WR. Matchup problems are huge.

I can see where you would only want to use him sparingly overall as a WR or a RB and I could be wrong - remember, I don't know as much about the game as all of you - but couldn't that be seen as an advantage on a kick returner? It seemed to me, when watching Sproles (and that other little guy whose name escapes me at the moment - Hester?) that having a tiny, fast returner can be a good thing - many times they seem to run right through those huge guys trying to tackle them; they're too little to find and bring down, as it were. I remember being so pleased last year when we seemed to have found a fast, little guy of our very own. I hope he sticks around.

Oh, yeah. I was referring to matchup problems as a WR, specifically. I still love his return skills and I really think he deserves a roster spot.
