It’s a Steelers’ record that has stood since 1972 – Franco Harris’ rookie total of 1,235 yards from scrimmage – but it might not see the New Year.

That’s because Le’Veon Bell will enter Sunday’s regular season finale against Cleveland just 73 yards shy of eclipsing Harris’ standard.......

and to think, he would destroy that record if he actually played all of the games. and he still might. it feels good to eat my crow. i was wrong about bell. didnt think he would be fast enough, didnt think he would be tough enough after contact. yeah sure, this is a so-so season when put up to comparison with a truly good season, but ive seen enough to feel good about his future, given the circumstances, and the fact that he's only 21.

well in fairness Franco did not have a 16 game season to work with either and Franco set that mark with just 188 carries in 1972 ... Bell is at 224 and counting

One thing I like about Bell is that he can catch. Having him as a threat in the passing game is nice. We haven't had a RB who could catch and make plays in a while. I can't wait to see what he can do with a full season.

I am not yet convinced that Bell has the ability to eclipse Franco's four Super Bowl rings, one SB MVP or top 10 all time rushing list. But it is a good start.

And hopefully an offensive line that can stay healthy and actually gel for a change.

Agreed.

Sadly, we haven't had a running back who is threat in the run game either...but that is more an indictment of the line.

Not knocking Bell, who is a fine RB.

in all fairness franco had this Manster to run behind :wink02: plus he will only have 13 games played to francos, so not a big difference IMO

doesn't change this any Franco set that mark with just 188 carries in 1972 ... Bell is at 224 and counting

And Bradshaw wasn't "Bradshaw" yet in '72, and Stallworth and Swann were both still in college at the time too...

Franco was a first ballot Hall of Famer, one of the all time greatest Steelers. So no he's not Franco. But still there's been a lot of rookie backs on this team over the years. Not a bad short list to get yourself on.

without looking it up , probably only 2 that got the bulk of the starts in their rookie year , most sat the bench ... Franco was here a long time Bettis was here a long time not many Rookie backs get starts over those guys , sure there was a gap between 32 and 36 but several journeymen filled those years and some had some good success always good enough to hold off the rookies from getting many touches ...

was not intended to be a knock on Bell as much as it was to put the numbers in perspective , some will see he broke a HoF RBs rookie record and think OMG he is the next coming of the Messiah or something when in fact yes he may break the record but it is not an indictment of him be the superior back of the two ( not even by a longshot )
