Mike Tomlin fined $100K for actionsUpdated: December 4, 2013, 11:14 AM ETESPN.com news The NFL on Wednesday fined Pittsburgh Steelers coach Mike Tomlin $100,000 for interfering with a kickoff return in last Thursday night's game vs. the Baltimore Ravens.

In addition, the league said it will consider a forfeiture of draft choices for the Steelers because Tomlin's conduct affected a play on the field.

The league said Tomlin's actions, in which he was standing on the white stripe that borders the playing field and took a step onto the field during Jacoby Jones' kickoff return, should have resulted in a 15-yard unsportsmanlike conduct penalty.

Tomlin apologized for his actions Tuesday and said he would accept whatever punishment the NFL decided to hand out to him.

I agree 100% ! The fine is enough punishment for Tomlin's action. No sense to hit the team with discipline, Tomlin's action had no action/result against the play itself. This has gone on long enough....fine him and drop it !

100k is exactly the punishment I though he deserved and posted that in another thread , also believe a draft pick is " over the top " considering the outcome of the game did not change because of the play / actions

I got a sneaky suspicion that they're going to drop us one pick behind the Ravens in the first round if we finish behind them in the year end standings.

depends on how bad the league wants to stick it to the Steelers

It sounds like it could be more than one draft pick

“because the conduct affected a play on the field, a modification or forfeiture of draft choices will be considered after the final order of the 2014 draft has been determined.”

" It’s also not clear whether the Steelers would merely be stripped of a pick (s) or whether the league would give a Pittsburgh pick to Baltimore as compensation for a rules violation that affected the Ravens."

From reading the league's release, I'd say they're leaning heavily in that direction. Just a matter of what round and how many picks.

If that was the plan they wouldn't need to wait to see the final order of the draft.

Good grief..... Deliberate or not, the fine is sufficient punishment... One of the sticking points is that photo of his smile after it happened and he was told about it.... I think that we have all been embarrassed at one time or another in our lives, and a common reaction is an uncomfortable grin..... I am about ready to find another hobby - - taxidermy or collecting snail shells or the like... The NFL has turned into a joke..... Damn Goodell!!!!

If we have to forfeit a pick that's one thing. But if you somehow reward the Ravens with our pick then that punishes the entire league and gives them an unfair competitive advantage.

If they really wanted to punish the Steelers, they would give them an additional draft choice. There's is probably a punter Colbert & Co. have their eyes on.

Because those paranoid idiots (Ravens) are convinced the league pulled the plug on them at the Super Bowl the Steelers have to pay through the nose? Yeah that sounds fair?

the fine is appropriate, whether intentional or not. even if it was intentional, how could anyone possibly justify taking away anything more than a late round pick when the patriots lost a 1st rounder for YEARS of cheating, including 3 superbowl wins?

If it affected the play, Jones would've been jumping up and down. Throwing a giddy fit. BHe didn't react other than the reaction a returner has after being tracked down from behind by a tackler.

Secondly, where was the flag on Tomlin? He's not supposed to be in the white area, there is obviously an official that sees him there, where's the flag? Fine the official $100K for not making a call, not doing his job. Right???

And exactly how many players have been suspended because of an accusation? 6 games to Ben for accusations.

The question is not if? but how many? draft picks will the league take.

Steelers sure knew what they were doing when they voted against this CBA. It would be hard to pick between Bettman and Goodell for Commish that has done most harm to their leagues.

Steelers Unlikely to Lose a Draft Pick

Only the NFL can take something as simple as fining Mike Tomlin and turning it into a confusing mess. That’s what they did when they tacked on the possible loss of draft picks that “will be considered after the final order of the 2014 draft has been determined,’’ according to the league release on the matter.

But as Ray Fittipaldo points out in his story today in the Post-Gazette, after consulting a source at the NFL, the draft pick would only be changed if that play that possibly cost the Ravens a touchdown affects playoff tiebreakers. There is little chance of that.

The NFL then has determined that Jacoby Jones might have scored a touchdown had Mike Tomlin not stepped into his path. They wound up kicking a field goal. That four-point difference theoretically could mean the difference between the Ravens making the playoffs and not making them based on a tiebreaker way down the list of tiebreakers. Point differential rarely comes into play.

So that is why the NFL ruled that draft picks could be taken away or altered. Yet, because it was ambiguous in its statement "Because the conduct affected a play on the field, a modification or forfeiture of draft choices” will be considered, the NFL fueled all kinds of speculation as to what that might be.

Basically, it means nothing because Baltimore’s position as a playoff team is so highly unlikely to be determined by those four points. But the NFL should have just come out and said that.

I don't really have a problem with this statement by a Dolphins player. First of all, it's meaningless because there's no way in hell Tomlin will come close to doing this again, and fear of bodily harm is way down on his list of reasons why. Second, if he does do it again then he absolutely deserves to get run over, even more so than a member of the Stanford band.
