Already stickied this link in the Draft forum, but thought I'd post it here too - pretty detailed salary cap calculator:

Yeah that would make sense. Hard to really play along without that option.

What do you mean? If you do not submit a selection the contract stays as-is.

ahh ok gotcha , thought ( you had to submit all selections ) then took you to a completion page ...

thanks for clearing that up

no question some tough cuts have to take place but we knew this ... just makes it more in your face seeing it in this manner

This might be a little off-topic, but I wish the NFL would adopt a one-player salary cap exemption rule. The price tags for franchise QBs have been ruining the depth of certain teams which has resulted in a lot of mediocrity in the NFL. If a franchise QB was put on a cap exemption, then their respective organizations can actually build a great team around him.

I'm not sure I like it. Teams like the 'Skins and Cowboys would just pay up to get their elite QB at any cost and potentially have other players take slightly below market salaries just to be on that team... teams like the Bengals, Packers and Cardinals would be in terrible shape with such an exemption. The cost of QBs for teams who decided they would rather use their exemption on, say, a WR or DE would go out of reach... and probably the teams who did that would cause WR contracts to go out of reach too for other teams. You may wind up creating three great dynasty teams and a whole lot of mediocrity elsewhere.

They should cap all players.

They should cap all players.

everyone should make X amount of money and everything else should be based on production escalators , those who chose to freelance against the system to attempt to increase that payday are simply benched by the team for a player who will play the system in place , teams could not circumvent the pay scale because every tackle is worth x amount , every sack x amount , every completion , td etc etc so your paying on a per play basis the same figure no matter whom is on the field ...results = payday and No cap at all

I played with it a bit, extended a few contracts and found out that if we go ahead and extend Ben's contract to make sure he retires a Steeler (say, another 3 years). Extend Troy a year or two, Extend Ike T. a year or two, there's the entire over-cap gone, plus money under the cap. Especially for Ike, who's made it clear that he wants to stick around and doesn't want to go to another team, I think he'd take vet min plus his last year's income extended over that period. I know, people don't like Ike, but who do you see being as good a number 2 as Ike? I don't know if we'll have that for the next couple of years, so even if we end up with an outstanding CB, it's still worth it to keep him around.

The other thing is giving Dwyer very little guaranteed money, and pushing a nice chunk of it into workout bonuses for the offseason. I, of course, dumped Levi Brown as well, which did wonders. No reason to keep him around. I don't know about Keisel, haven't watched the D line enough to know how much he's been playing.

They should cap all players.

Players, or at the very least, positions. Could you imagine that?

O line XX percent of cap
QBs get XX of cap
WRs get XX percent of cap

etc. etc.

This way, when someone goes in and asks for the blockbuster contract, they then have to go back into the position meetings and face the other 3, 5, 7 people that they directly took money from.

I must not be understanding this tool correctly. I was able to extend and/or keep almost everyone (Woodley, Ike, Troy, Ben, Velasco, Pouncey, Kiesel, etc) and only had to cut Clark, Foote, and some guys I never heard of. Ended up fairly decent under the cap.

I thought that wasn't possible...

Steeldude

I didn't extend or restructure anyone because I wouldn't know if they would accept. I only used cuts to save cap room.

I wouldn't re-sign Clark or Kiesel.

It is possible, it's why stuff like that's done every year. The problem is that (1) if you're extending Ike an Troy and Kiesel too far, you're backloading for more problems. On top of that, you have no idea whether they'd really take the offers.

Yeah, I thought about that. For those I extended, for the most part, I figured they'd get their full salary for next year over a couple years, vet min, plus a bonus to sweeten the deal. It's also why I didn't even mess with Pouncey or Sanders, because there's no idea what they'd ask for.

Clark's a safety, they aren't going to hit a downturn in their abilities as quickly as a CB, mainly because at that position, they can use veteran moves to predict and cut off routes. On top of that, I do think Clark will come back for a very small offer. It's absolutely worth having him on this team until he can no longer perform. I don't think he's deteriorated that far at all. I'd see him starting next year for the first few games, maybe most of the season but sharing time, and then taking up a backup role in the following season. If he's willing to sign a contract that gives him a hit on the cap of 5-6 hundred thousand in that last year if he doesn't stay, I think it's well worth the money.

vet min for a tenured player of his length is well over that number I believe its 955k with 10 years service ) he would be headed into his 13th season in 2014

If he stays, yes. However, there's no guaranteed moneys necessary if he doesn't stay. That's why I was suggesting sweetening the deal with a little signing bonus.

I think you missed the point ( or maybe I am not getting yours ) but either way any contract offer has to have a BASE salary @ 955k or more singing bonus and incentives like roster bonus and workouts , contract escalators and incentives for pro bowl , all pro , or said number of plays all would have to be heaped on top of that 955k ... and being a vested vet if on roster week 1 of the season the contract becomes fully guaranteed ....

so if at that point they are a fringe player in a backup role you are best served contract wise to keep them all of camp and preseason , release them a day or two before the season and hope nobody snags them off waivers and then resign them on Monday after the season has started ... financially that is the prudent thing to do , but it is not the message you want to send to a long time member of your team who has been with you for many years
