OAKLAND, Calif. — This was all Shaun Suisham's fault.

Simple math shows that his two missed kicks accounted for all the difference in the Steelers' 21-18 loss to the Raiders on Sunday, right?

As a red-eyed Suisham was telling us at his stall, “We'd have won the football game if I was better.”

Yep. The kicker who hadn't missed a kick all season blew it.

No, I take that back. This was all Ben Roethlisberger's fault.

What was he thinking throwing away that timeout on the penultimate drive when a spike would suffice?

“The timeout's important,” he tried to explain, not all that firmly. “But so is the 5 yards for a team that's struggling to score touchdowns.”

Absurd, of course. The quarterback let down his team.

Actually, the real culprits were LaMarr Woodley, Troy Polamalu, Lawrence Timmons, Ryan Clark and, oh, maybe seven teammates, all being sucked to the right — call it Oakland's second Black Hole — as Terrelle Pryor sprinted the other way for a 93-yard touchdown on the opening snap.

Woodley, in particular, went all day without a single tackle.

“We need to do better,” Woodley said.

Sure, if by “we,” he means Clark.

I mean there's biting on a fake, then there's swallowing and digesting a fake. Clark might still be roaming the old corridors of O.co Coliseum in search of a football-free Darren McFadden.

“You'd like for the middle-of-the-field safety to be a little patient there,” Clark said in his own third-person way.

Good thing for Antonio Brown's two second-half drops, anyway, to take the heat off him. Those were the killers.

“Oakland made good plays both times,” Brown fairly whispered, “but I know I've got to hang on to those.”

Well, so does the punter. Zoltan Mesko had one blocked when he failed to catch a snap and muffed another so badly it should get him demoted from junior varsity to unemployment.

OK, I'll stop there.

But the truth is, I could continue carrying on in this vein all day through next Sunday, and it wouldn't change the following: The Steelers are one poorly prepared, poorly built football team.

And that — for real this time — is on Mike Tomlin.

I don't know how anyone could deny this fact.

Definately falls on the coaching staff. You don't see any fire at all out of the Steelers and you don't see much from Tomlin. The Defense is not performing, The Offense operates on bubble screens and nobody can run the ball to save their life. Haley and Tomlin should be worried.

Tomlin is far to comfortable in his job security knowing full well the Rooney's have a long standing unspoken policy of keeping their HCs for the long haul , when he first got here he was full of fire and wanted to prove himself , now not so much and he is lax in his duties IMO ... I have not witnessed such unpreparedness in a Steelers team for such a stretch of time since Cowher mailed in his final year .... it is time for a change

That's two crappy years in a row and 3 of the last 5. Half the time under Tomlin, we've come in not ready for the season. Some of this also falls on Omar Khan, whose salary cap "genius" mostly consisted of overpaying players we couldn't afford to and in most cases didn't need to, and then kicking the can down the road. But on the other hand, we've drafted poorly for several years, and the development of new players has been close to zero. The first one has anywhere from some to a lot to do with coaching, depending on who you believe. The second one has everything to do with coaching. Piss poor job, man, piss poor.

What does that do about running 18 plays inside the Oakland 25 and Todd Haley calling for exactly one throw into the end zone?

Wow, did not know that! Haven't seen the game yet. But rather than just cut the punter if Tomlin wants to do something that would really resonate he should fire Haley no later than this morning.

How could firing Haley make it worse? Right now we have the least potent offense outside the state of Florida. That's right folks, outside of the pathetic and quarterbackless Tampa Bay Buc, and Jacksonville Jaguars the Steelers possess the lowest scroring offense in the league.

I wouldn't be sad to see Haley go. Enough is enough. No more excuses. Perform or get the axe. Even in our 2 wins our offense did not look all that promising.

Also, time to bite the bullet and eat the dead money. Clean house, clean the roster and let's rebuild. Hard to find something promising to build on.
