I Couldn't wait any longer to post this:

Wildcard Game 8:07 PM in Pittsburgh

Expected Starters:
Cincinnati - Johnny Cueto (2.97 ERA - 1.69 Career Postseason ERA)
Pittsburgh - Francisco Liriano (3.02 ERA - 5.87 Career Postseason ERA)

I wouldn't mind if they started Cole for this game, but that won't happen.

Here's an example of what a blackout looked like when the White Soxs did one awhile back:

Looks like Liriano might have a short leash in case he has a bad start they might toss Cole in to try and keep it under control.

If that's the approach, wouldn't it make more sense to start Cole? Liriano comes in if Cole has trouble, or he starts Game 1 if it goes smoothly.

Gotta love it. Liriano has been our best pitcher and has been a damn good pitcher at home, but there seems to be little support for him. Real nice.

This is the sixth time the Pirates have met the Reds in the postseason. The Reds have been quite the nemesis.

The Reds are 4-1 against the Pirates in the Postseason.

I was thinking about how recently he gave up 10 runs in one game and 7 in another, but looking back those were away games, and it does look like he has been solid on the mound in Pitt.

Everyone wants Cole to start since he has been their best pitcher over the past month. But given the choice, I'll take Liriano against the Reds' LH-heavy lineup, and he has been very good at home. He will have a short leash, though.

Liriano sitting them down quickly. He isn't that deep into the pitch count, and I think that Cueto is rattled.

I never thought I would see this again. I remember being a sophomore in HS listening to the Pirates-Braves game at work, and then my manager sent me home. I pedaled my ass off getting home only to see Sid Bream rounding third. But, I have never taken my Pirates hat off! I have been sporting a Pirates ball cap for as long as I can remember. Most of the time I felt like the coffee drinkers in Major League (who the hell are these guys) but I have always supported them.

Allegedly some punks in the crowd attacked Mat Latos' wife last night. Now, the reason why I never go to Steelers games, aside from the price tag, is because I don't want to be surrounded by a bunch of drunken idiots. We really don't need that to carry over to the Pirates, especially when just about every fan from opposing teams, including rivals, say that they are treated with respect when they go to the games there. If this is true, I hope those jackholes are punished severely and the security guards who reportedly did nothing are all immediately fired. That really put a damper on an otherwise great night at the park.

I've heard about this too. If this is true, then it is very sad and the people responsible for this should be punished. If it isn't true and she's making it up, then shame on her. There are some things I do wonder about though. I mean, how would the fans have realized it was her if she wasn't wearing anything to support the Reds? It makes me wonder if maybe she said somethings too. Apparently she runs her mouth on twitter sometimes.

- - - Updated - - -

So, I'm looking over her twitter account and she's still going on about it. There are some questionable tweets directed towards are fans. She is cursing at them and calling them names. She is also pressing charges. If this is true, I hope the people go to jail.

It only counts as one loss. If Cole can g0 out and pitch lights out like he did all September then we can go back to PNC tied at 1 and game one will be forgotten. Remembr the Pirates got outscored by a bunch in the 60 W.S.But they won all the close ones, and in the end all wins are equal.

Borski
10-03-2013, 08:24 PM
AJ had a bad game, but luckly this is a 5 game series and not a Wild Card game. If Cole plays well, and I feel he will then we have a good chance tomorrow, and then we come back to PNC for the next 2 games. anything can happen.

Sorry, but the Bucs are done. They simply are not ready to beat the likes of the Cards with all of that playoff experience they have. That's not a knock on them, it's simply a truth that many fans don't want to admit. It's just another step toward them eventually (hopefully) becoming a real threat to win a World Series, and not one of them should hang their heads once they're eliminated.

No one will take issue with this post because you phrased it in the way of an opinion. Contrasted with your previous post which came across as a nasty 15 year old spitefully informing his 7 year old cousin that Santa doesn't exist, and only a stupid little kid would be dumb enough to believe so to begin with.

Now as to your assertion that i do the same thing over in the Steelers forums. A couple notable differences. I usually chock load my opinions as opinions and add in plenty of qualifiers. As an example

If this team is in fact as bad as it appears they are then you're looking at a 6-10 record or worse. This team doesn't appear to be a player or two away, they appear to be about 10 players away. This team is more than one draft away from being good again in my opinion. With that in mind do you rebuild around what will be an 11 year vet who probably wont have much left when you bring the over all talent level back up to an acceptable rate? Or do you cash in that chip while it still might have some value, and hasten the rebuilding process with the value you gain in that trade?

And as to your statement that all the Pirates have done is guarantee a 4th game. You are correct. But let me add my own opinion on to that fact. Liriano is money at PNC. So I think there's at least a 50-50 chance we win that and go up 2-1 with a chance to win it in 4 with Charlie Morton and never let the series go back to St.Louis. But that's where we have to win it most likely. Because if it goes back to Bush with Wainwright pitching game 5 it probably ends badly for the Bucs.

But taking it one game at a time I 'm keeping my fingers crossed that Liriano gets us up in this series. :crossed:

Trust me, if (when) they do, in fact, lose this series, it has been a successful season beyond my wildest dreams. I would not criticize them AT ALL for losing the NLDS to the team with the best record in the NL, and IMO the better overall team.

If they lose this series I'm fine with it too. But I'll tell you this, I don't think Cardinal fans are nearly as certain about the outcome of this series as you are. Liriano has bee money at PNC all year. And if he comes through don't bet against Morton closing it out in four. The Bucs have played the Cards tough all season. If we can go into game 4 with a series lead all the pressure is on them.

I think this series is a coin flip.

Liriano is 4-0 with a 1.16 career ERA in four starts against the Cardinals. He dominated in three starts this year, including a complete game in St. Louis, and allowed 10 hits in 22 innings with 20 strikeouts. He was the winner Tuesday night against Cincinnati in front of a raucous crowd in Pittsburgh that was celebrating the Pirates' return to the postseason.

You're correct. Cardinal fans are not thinking that this series is a sure thing for them. Typically the Cards don't do things easily in the playoffs anyway.

A lot of Cards fans, including me, think that Matheny made a mistake by starting Lynn yesterday. He's been very erratic and I think that was an important game for the Cards. Matheny also made a mistake by leaving him in too long and letting the game get out of hand. It might not have mattered as they couldn't get anything going against Cole but you never know.

I still think this series is going 5 games.

Excuse me for my ignorance on this issue, but what is the latest that a team/manager can announce who they are starting? The reason that I am asking is why come out so early and inform the other team who you are starting? Let them guess for awhile, don't give them time to game film the pitcher and possibly pick up on certain nuances that give away pitches. I am happy that Hurdle is starting Cole, I think he is the better of the two (Burnett and Cole).

Great game, but a tough loss nonetheless. Glad he's starting Cole game 5. I know that's a tough gig for a rookie. But I think Cole can handle it. Anyway you look at it we're playing with house money. So I expect a relaxed and confident Buc team to give it one helluva shot in St. Louis. Win or lose this ride has been great, and I'm enjoying every moment of it.

I can't wait until tonight! I will finally get a chance to watch a Pirate playoff game from start to finish for the first time in 20+ years. I've been on the road a lot lately and have listened to as much of the games as I could on XM radio. I've got home in time to see a couple game partially. I even hijacked a television in the picnic grove at Delaware Park the other day and saw most of game four live. But it's not the same as being able to sit down in your living room, crack open a beer, and watching the game from the first pitch on!

He, Cole, is pitching a good game for a rookie in this type of game/environment. I think he will keep us in the game, we just need the bats to get hot and the Cardinals D to just miss one or two.

Hurdle went to the pen too early. Never should have pinchhit for Cole in that situation. I get that we're going to lose this game anyway. IDK, I understand why he thought we needed runs. My problem with Hurdle tonight is sticking with Milancen in a critical situation again. He has not been reliable for over a month. Still, Hurdle is manager of the year. He has done a stellar job of changing the Pirates' culture.

Not arguing that, but he is a good middle reliever, and I think he has a place here in Pittsburgh. Maybe Wilson and him swap out?

7-1, fucking pathetic! I know, I know, first time in 85,000 years since Pirates have been in the playoffs, but to allow two pitchers, one in our house, one in theirs, to hold the Pirates to one run each. Pathetic!

No matter what though, the Pirates can/hopefully will build off of this and come back stronger next year. Was fun watching the ride, and look forward to watching many more. Hope for a rematch next year, game 5/7 in St. Louis, and we shut the overpaid team up!

This is the second time that you've called the Cardinals "overpaid". Where exactly are you getting that?

They're the #11 team in MLB as far as salaries go. They're also one of the most consistently good teams in the majors year in and year out and don't go out and spend large amounts of money on free agents.

As disappointed as I am, it is hard for me not to feel great about this season. Maybe it's because of the bad times that these times seem so good. I have never been so excited about Pirates baseball!

:drink: The series with the Dodgers starts tonight. Everyone seems to be picking the Dodgers even though the Cards tied for the best record in baseball and played in the toughest division.

Hurdle is a good manager and the Pirates are loaded with young talent, as are the Cards. We'll be battling for the division for years to come.

Edman

Hopefully, the Pirates watching the Cards celebrate will be like the Pens watching the Red Wings celebrate their last championship.

That was the Senators. The Younger, inexperienced Pens were outclassed by the Senators and watched them celebrate on home ice, then Ottawa put up pictures of the after-game handshake, which inspired to Pens to clobber them the next year.

I too hope this same thing happens to the Pirates. They took a very experienced, very talented Cardinals team to five games, but St. Louis went for the rubbing in the final win. They won, but wanted to humiliate the Pirates doing so. Sitting there in the dugout watching the Cards celebrating a blowout loss in front of their home crowd will be a lasting impression. I know they were feeling frustrated, angry, and maybe even a little lingering resentment.

The Pirates battled so damn hard to win in 21 years, and then having to see what is basically the NL equivalent of the New York Yankees win again at their expense has to sting. The Cards win ALL the time, their constant success likely pissing them off and driiving them. I know these Pirates are hungry. They want the postseason. They want Division titles. They want World Series titles. They want the accolades. They want the success the Cardinals have had.

Now what remains is what the Pirates do with this loss. Hopefully they can channel this into future success in 2014 and beyond. I can see a nasty rivalry brewing in the Central if this keeps up.

Sorry I'm late, but great job by the Pirates this year. It was absolutely wonderful to see the Pirates have a winning record and make it to the NLDS. Andrew should win the MVP award, Fransisco should get the Come Back Player of the Year, and Clint should get Manager of the year for the turn around he helped create. I'm absolutely proud of this team and of the front office as well. They made great decisions and brought in good players. So with that being said, I hope the Dodgers win the NLCS even though they're down 2-0. I hope that Byrd and Morneau can be resigned. I think Byrd would be a great mentor for Greg when he comes up from the minors something this season. I also hope the front office can cut some of the dead weight off this team and get some good quality players for backups.
