Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said this afternoon at his weekly news conference the most significant reason for the team's first 0-2 start since 2002 is the offense, which has produced just two touchdowns in the first two games.
"The most significant reason is we're 0-2 is we're not scoring enough points," Tomlin said 12 hours after the Steelers fell at Cincinnati, 20-10, on Monday Night Football. "Nineteen points in two football games is not going to win a lot of football in this league. If you would have told me we'd score 19 points through the first two ball games I would have told you we'd have an opportunity to 0-2. We understand that and we are working hard to rectify that."
Tomlin said there were no serious injuries from the Cincinnati game.
Tomlin also said four players who did not play against the Bengals might be closer to returning. Tight end Heath Miller (knee), cornerbacks Cortez Allen (ankle) and Curtis Brown (illness) and running back Le'Veon Bell will do more this week in practice and their availability for the Bears game will be evaluated later in the week.
After limited participation practice last week, Tomlin said Miller, who is rehabilitating from major knee surgery, is expected to be a full participant this week

The one thing so many are forgetting in this forum is that often times in the NFL, it just takes one little nudge in this direction or that direction to create a completely different season than the one we thought we were looking at.
Here's hoping Miller's addition is just that nudge we're looking for.

Surprisingly, we don't have the suckiest passing game in the league, nor the worst overall offense. Our running game does blow chunks, tho'. Bringing Heath back can only be a good thing.

....and Bell......and Cortez.

Well, let's hope Miller can get the passing game going. As for Bell, he keeps having that on-again-off-again injury that makes me think it's going to be an all-season thing. It would be nice if we got something out of him, but if we're counting on it, we're likely to end up in Disappointsylvania.

I just hope they aren't rushing Miller back because the offense has been playing so poorly.

Also let's not let the defense off the hook. They certainly deserve some blame, no turnovers in two games and they allowed over 400 yards last night, and would have been more had Dalton not overthrew open receivers on multiple occasions

• The Steelers' woes on first down continued. They had 22 first-down plays in the game and managed only 3.5 yards per play. Take away the two first downs they converted on first down, and they averaged 1.7 yards per play. That put the Steelers in 2nd-and-9 the majority of the game thus explaining the 3-of-12 third-down conversions.
The Steelers running game has been far from good through the first two games, accounting for only 75 yards. Against the Bengals, the struggles continued, but you can't blame offensive coordinator Todd Haley for trying different ways to jump-start the run game. Out of the 14 rushes by running backs, only seven came out of a non-shotgun or hurry-up formation and gained a mere 10 yards. Not once did the Steelers run the ball when fullback Will Johnson was in the game, and only two runs were called when there were more than two tight ends in the formation.

The Steelers spent the better part of the offseason overhauling their running scheme to the outside zone in order to help the run game. However, through two games (31 rushing attempts), the Steelers used the outside zone just once. The Steelers didn't use that technique once against the Bengals.

This one confuses the hell out of me? They made a big deal all through OTA and training camp about how they were going to turn their running game around by employing zone blocking technique, and once the season starts they just shelf it?

New Center that doesn't know how to run it, maybe? Maybe they were planning it for a couple backs that are out of the game injured right now? Who knows. I'm of the opinion though that we need to go back to a straight ahead push. Just smack the guy ahead of you and give 'er all you got. It can't end up any worse than what it is now.

I'm pretty sure the Titans used it last year. I think I read somewhere that Chris Johnson was the ideal sort of back for that scheme, and they cited the Titans use of it.

True. But my boy. Sword creek va Heath miller could be a big part of changing all of that . He's a game changer all of us know this. Miller at 70 percent is 3 times better than anything on our roster
