An ominous Tweet by Tribune Review reporter Mark Kaboly is likely to fuel the fire raging over why Steelers (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/teams/pittsburgh-steelers) running back Jonathan Dwyer (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/108581/jonathan-dwyer) was released.......

Of course not. He was the #1 rusher last year on a small amount of carries (about 6 games worth of carries) and racked up more than half of 1,000 yards! He had a good preseason outside of a mistake, and would have probably been a starter or a least a second-stringer against the Titans. I believe he has some character issues with a side of non-commitment. The Front Office may have decided that those issues weren't worth the money, or maybe it wasn't the Front Office that wanted him gone. If his character a question to the point to where his chemistry with the rest of the team was affecting, it's likely that one of the players spoke out about him and helped trigger the release. Likely especially if a veteran was on board with it.

I don't think Redman has a long leash either. If he can't get over these injury problems, see ya later. Or least they will put him on IR and give him one more chance.

Maybe it was a FO decision, but it looked to me like he was in Tomlin's doghouse pretty much from day one. Not that it's shocking to see a guy go when he has a limited ceiling and is showing more of the same. The team was really bending over backward this season to address the RB position. If we'd stood pat, it would've reminded me of the year when we maxed out with the Gary Russell / Mewelde Moore / Slow Willie Parker combo. As I recall, we won the Super Bowl that year, but our running game was atrocious.

Considering it's the coaches that make these decisions, I don't know how much I trust that report. The Rooney's are pretty good about letting the coaches put together their team and not get in the way. And like you said Sue, Kaboly is being very vague in this "report".

And if Rooney did step in and tell the team to cut Dwyer? Just speaks to how much disdain there was for him if Rooney decided to step in and put his foot down.

i personally wouldnt have minded keeping him, but im not in disdain that we let him go either. for those who wanted to hang onto him so badly, if you were willing to keep a lazy bum like him around, hopefully you were ready for the possibility of him negatively impacting the locker room

Anything it takes to get this team back to a winning, dynasty powerhouse, I'm all for. I have faith in the Rooney's and their judgement calls. They definitely see and hear more than we do.

While it's not common we're privy to the internal workings of the Steelers - a traditionally tight-lipped franchise - this gives some insight into the controversy Dwyer's release that's brewing among fans.

I must not have been paying attention, didn't know we had a controversy brewing. Trying to make a story out of nothing.

Gonna be kinda hard "making the Steelers regret it" from one's couch, seeing as how nobody picked him up off waivers or anything. :coffee:

The Cleveland Browns demonstrated their utmost confidence in the health of running back Trent Richardson by dumping his only proven backup.

The Browns released Brandon Jackson on Sunday, ProFootballTalk reported, citing a league source.

...To replace Jackson, the Browns claimed Bobby Rainey and Dennis Johnson off waivers from the Baltimore Ravens and Houston Texans, respectively, according to multiple reports.

Ex-Steelers RB Jonathan Dwyer passed through waivers unclaimed and is now a free agent.
Working against Dwyer was a $1.323 million base salary. We'd be surprised if he weren't signed quickly for closer to the fourth-year NFL minimum. Dwyer is a somewhat slow-footed power back who lacks versatility, but he can still add early-down thump to a running game. He's also only 24 years old.

Rotoworlds take

Can't imagine why we let him go

Golden Corral is the one who will receive the brunt of the chip. All-you-can-eat prime rib and fried shrimp.

And if it was a financial move, possible since that was a lot of the speculation after the Jones acquisition, keep in mind that we thought 1.3 million was too much to keep him. Which in the grand scheme of things, isn't that much money.

Yes exactly, for a guy starting its nothing its a big time value. But for a guy a the bottom of your depth chart whos not a specialist in any area its way too much.

I didn't know there was a huge controversy over him being cut. I know some fans are unhappy about it, but I'll trust the Steelers organization on it.

I didn't read the article, but if Art Rooney stepped in and made this decision, then he was well within his right as the man who runs the team to do so. I am sure if it was his decision, and his decision alone, he had his reasons to do so. It is not the job of the rest of the front office and the coaches to question the decisions of the owner. I am going to guess little to nothing was actually said to the media over the cut, because that's a quick way to lose your job.

I thought that Dwyer "had a chip on his shoulder" when he wasn't drafted until the 6th round? He sure didn't do much about that one.

I thought of Ben Stiller at the end of Dodgeball when I first read Dwyer's tweet.

Dwyer i have a chip on my shoulder as well every time we would get the run game going, you would have to take yourself out of the game you get paid for to be in shape, so i do like him and i hope he catches on somewhere, but i dont think we will regret anything.

I'm sure there are some coaches who are upset with the release. That probably happens when most players are released. And even though I could see there being a decent faction of coaches upset over this move in particular - since he was, you know, the most productive back in the backfield - I don't think this will cause any major rifts or anything. It is what it is.
