Surprised. Still assume the team is going to carry nine lineman so why cut one in the process? And Malecki, for as much of a Legursky clone as he is, had a good camp.

Yeah, I don't get the move. It's not as if Malecki couldn't play guard/center.

Plus Wallace apparently has only one career appearance. So it's not like he gives an edge in experience over Malecki.

Maybe Malecki gets added Tuesday when Spaeth is put on I/R. I was thining it was going to be Marshall McFadden, but we'll see. The bottom of the roster is going to churn all season long.

Maybe he can take number 17 so fans can still wear their Wallace jerseys to the games. :chuckle:

We have Whimper as a back up. Anymore questions?

That doesn't explain why we picked up this guy. He's already been cut by 6 other teams. Do the Steelers honestly think that all 6 of those other teams screwed up? The guy has no future in the NFL.

Nor should Whimper. He should not be on our roster. 1 or 2 injuries on our O Line and we will be longing for the days of Jonathon Scott.

Another odd move. Butler had a fine camp.

Not that it matters that much...but he hasnt actually been with six other teams. 49ers...Lions...Jets...Texans and Bucs. David Todd apparantly thinks that since the Lions cut him and then resigned him...it counts as two different franchises.

You're right, it doesn't matter much. 5 or 6 other teams. It still shows that he's already proven that he's not good enough to be in the NFL. I'd rather them take a chance on a younger guy with promise.

Mesko is a very good punter..... He was due to make around $1.4 million if the Pats retained him and was no doubt cut because UDFA Ryan Allen will make almost $1 million less.

Just proves that he is a wave player. Not good enough to stick as a starter for any team but perhaps good enough to fill in for a play or two if needed. I think he is better than Whimper...but thats not really the "ruler" we want to judge anyone by.

While I don't think that Butler is very good, I'm also not sure that Mesko is any better. Their stats last year were almost identical and Butler is younger.

then you arent looking at the right stats. Look closer. Yes, his net average last season was only 0.1 yard higher than butler, and his average was slightly lower. But he's clearly better in some key areas:

% of punts that stay inbounds:
Zoltan: 98.33%
Butler: 88.31%

% of punts in the 20:
Zoltan: 46.67%
Butler: 33.77%

% of punts fair caught:
Zoltan: 31.67%
Butler: 25.97%

And he's never punted a ball that went for a TD in his 3 year career, although i suppose that should also be equated to the other 10 special teamers on the field. It's time like these where it would be nice to see a website like pro football focus keep track of hangtimes.

Yet, all those stats are as much about the team as the punter, except for the first one, and that one I'm not exactly sure is a good thing. What is nice about punting out of bounds is that the other team can't run it back, period. As for punts inside the 20, that's as dependent on your offense getting you to a place that you can put the ball inside the twenty as it is anything else. Punts fair caught is the same deal, if your punting from the fifty, and the ball lands at the ten, that's only a forty yard sprint, done in 4 plus seconds if there were no blockers, a few more if there are. That almost demands a fair catch. Compare that to punting fifty five yards to put the ball on the fifteen, but then the returner has time to come up field. I really don't think punter stats are accurate.

I do agree that hang time would be nice to have, as would something like "Percent of punts from 50+ yards inside twenty, 40-49 yards inside twenty, etc etc. I think that'd be a much better way to look at it.

Any odds of being able to say that after his 4 year career?

The same question can be asked of why they signed the worst guard in the league when they signed Guy Whimper. Whimper graded out as the worst guard in the league last season. The truth is the Steelers have a greater portion of their salary cap tied to a handful of players.

It certainly appears that both signings were poor decisions by the front office. We'll see how they play out.

Well, since the team released him for Wallace it's obvious who the superior player must be. Malecki was a talentless bum.............................. Jk Chidi :chuckle: I agree with you: I don't get it.

Hearing Tomlin's reasoning for signing Wallace should give all Steelers' fans cause for concern. Why, you ask? I've got two words for you: Sean Mahan. In case any of you have forgotten it was Tomlin, in his first year as head coach, that suggested signing Mahan, a former player he worked with while he worked for the buccaneers, to replace all pro center, Jeff Hartings. Signing Guy Whimper, one of the worst starting guards in the league, last season elicited a collective, W.T.F. from steelers fans because, from the outside looking in, this was a bone headed decision. Given that scenario, whenever I hear Tomlin endorse the signing of a free agent offensive lineman it raises a red flag with me because his track record indicates that he is devoid of the ability to recognize a bad O.L. player from a mediocre one.

At least Whimper isn't starting. Mahan wasn't even the worst of the FA pickups. It still pains me to remember Johnathan Scott starting a season directing traffic towards... I mean protecting Ben's blind side. Max absolutely saved that season coming in off the couch.

Whimper has traditionally been a tackle but the Steelers have been running him at guard as well.

Sounds like they were interested in having a natural Center who could fill at guard instead of the other way around.
