Miller activated; Dwyer among 22 cuts

Bob LabriolaSteelers Digest @BobLabriola (https://twitter.com/#!/boblabriola)

The Steelers released 22 players, including veteran running back Jonathan Dwyer (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/jonathan-dwyer/5bfae686-9098-4bb3-85aa-bfd8c720d223/) and three recent draft picks, and they activated tight end Heath Miller (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/heath-miller/ada7ab1b-9acd-421a-bed0-79ccc4542630/) from the physically unable to perform list in moves designed to get their roster to the NFL-mandated limit of 53 for the start of the 2013 season.

The decision to activate Miller from the physically unable to perform list means the Steelers’ Pro Bowl tight end can begin practicing with the team immediately. He then can be worked into the lineup whenever he is ready. Had Miller stayed on PUP, he would have had to miss the first six weeks of the season, which would have meant he couldn’t have been added to the roster until Monday, Oct. 7, which is the day following the Steelers’ bye.

Dwyer was the Steelers’ first pick in the sixth round of the 2010 draft, and he had played in 21 games during his career with the team, with all six of his starts coming in 2012. During that 2012 season, Dwyer led the team in rushing with 623 yards on 156 carries (4.0 average), and he scored two touchdowns. He recorded back-to-back 100-yard games – 122 on 17 carries in Cincinnati on Oct. 21, and 107 on 17 carries vs. Washington on Oct. 28. After signing his restricted free agent tender early this offseason, Dwyer acknowledged that he came to training camp in the best shape of his career and led the Steelers in rushing during the just-concluded preseason, with 34 carries for 136 yards (4.0 average).

The three recent draft picks cut were nose tackle Alameda Ta’amu, the No. 4 pick in 2012; cornerback Terry Hawthorne (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/terry-hawthorne/f7b19889-f4a6-4e7e-a4c3-5859971a5393/), the No. 5 pick in 2013; and wide receiver Justin Brown (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/justin-brown/5c9866ca-435a-4f97-9b70-a5d5a964c11d/), the No. 6a pick in 2013.

Ta’amu was on the team’s active roster for seven weeks last season, but he was inactive for all of those games. He also spent six weeks on the Steelers’ practice squad and two on the reserve/suspended list.

Hawthorne missed most of his rookie offseason program while rehabilitating a knee injury that also sidelined him into training camp at Saint Vincent College. He did get himself onto the field before the preseason ended and finished with two tackles.

Brown began his college career at Penn State before transferring to Oklahoma in 2012 where he caught passes from Landry Jones (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/landry-jones/2aab90fa-2e72-4773-b47f-445c7ea9b8cc/), who begins the season as the Steelers’ No. 3 quarterback. Brown caught six passes for 44 yards during the preseason and also returned one punt for three yards.

In addition to Dwyer, the other veteran on the list of cuts was 12-year veteran punter Brian Moorman (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/brian-moorman/b3f4b938-fa9c-4871-b3f0-e514d0f829e3/), a three-time Pro Bowl selection during his time with the Buffalo Bills. Moorman punted for Dallas last season and signed with the Steelers this past offseason as an unrestricted free agent. He punted 12 times during the preseason, and he finished with a 40.3-yard gross average and a 36.6 net average, with five inside the 20-yard line and one touchback.

The rest of the moves involved players who either were undrafted rookies or first-year players, including three with ties to the team that went beyond just one summer: cornerback Josh Victorian (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/josh-victorian/70a41c60-df9d-4daf-a84a-1b106f585a18/), linebacker Marshall McFadden (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/marshall-mcfadden/5226f737-b5b2-430c-b8a6-3d2cf241f56b/), and tight end Jamie McCoy (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/jamie-mccoy/14ea585f-53b1-4c6f-968b-280ab8bcedf7/).

Victorian signed with the Steelers last summer on the eve of training camp as an undrafted rookie and was a member of the practice squad at the start of the 2012 season. He was added to the active roster on Dec. 8, and he played in each of the final four games of the regular season, with a start in Dallas against the Cowboys on Dec. 16. In those four games, Victorian totaled five tackles and four passes defensed.

McFadden spent most of 2012 on the Steelers’ practice squad, but he was on the active roster for two games – in Baltimore against the Ravens on Dec. 2 and vs. the Browns in the season finale on Dec. 30.

McCoy also spent most of last season on the team’s practice squad, but he was added to the active roster for the finale against the Browns after Miller injured his knee the previous week against the Bengals and was put on the injured reserve list.

Waived were eight undrafted rookies, including wide receiver Reggie Dunn (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/reggie-dunn/9aa75a17-5622-4cce-960e-92f7da44830e/); offensive linemen Mike Golic Jr., Joe Madsen (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/joe-madsen/46802dfb-12ed-477a-bfd3-3cbb5170884b/), and Chris Hubbard (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/chris-hubbard/95b346b2-76fd-4b9c-bdfe-4e195cd2fd58/); defensive end Brian Arnfelt (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/brian-arnfelt/cf861f63-bfa2-4a9c-b7a4-40be3d749b2c/); linebackers Alan Baxter (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/alan-baxter/c003dc4b-31be-48b1-8c36-8e42086988d0/) and Terence Garvin (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/terence-garvin/d971d6a3-07b5-440a-bcc2-98521780c2e1/); and cornerback Devin Smith (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/devin-smith/4323f4e0-9a4b-47e0-a864-9dd4a24944a8/).

The first-year players to be waived included wide receiver Kashif Moore (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/kashif-moore/3d8564a8-830f-4ac5-8d17-f7f75cdcc0be/), running back Alvester Alexander (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/alvester-alexander/ca0b28fd-2d3c-4675-9e7a-4e744f72edfe/), tight end Nathan Overbay (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/nathan-overbay/15b1548c-4ec8-4de4-8fd9-fa6a8cda3443/), and tackle Joe Long (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/joe-long/938b26c0-ec81-4dce-89c6-a317122cf210/). Also waived were second-year linebacker Brian Rolle (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/brian-rolle/243ae496-a559-44d2-b11d-e88234d40744/) and second-year safety Ross Ventrone (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/ross-ventrone/ff515d46-fc0f-484f-92dc-e0950fde50c5/).............

When will the practice squad be announced ?

I imagine it takes at least a day. These players have to clear waivers first. But I don't know if Sunday counts as a day, or even Monday with the holiday. But that wouldn't be cool if they had to wait until Tuesday since the season starts on Thursday for some teams.

Felix's showing was enough to push Dwyer, apparently.

Not surprised about Moorman getting axed. Butler had more consistent hangtimes and a much, much better leg. That was shown in pretty much every single game.

Little surprised Rolle and McFadden got cut considering they were both running as 2nd team ILBs pretty much all camp.

Victorian isn't a huge surprise. Surprise make one year, on the street the next. Such is life in the NFL. Isaiah Green is the CB who surprises everyone this year. Made it even after missing the 3rd preseason game.

Assuming we're going to be all over the waiver wire for backup OL. The only backups right now are Beachum and Whimper and Malecki. Look for us to add one more.

wow, im surprised with cutting alan baxter, brian rolle, and marshall mcfadden, all promising looking linebackers that i thought were part of the reason why we felt comfortable trading adrian robinson. Im almost even more surprised that both vince williams and chris carter made the roster. Cutting joe long and dwyer were pretty surprising as well. And to think, dwyer seemed like a favorite to start. Redman, Jones, and Hyphen...your time to shine

Really glad moye made it . Liked his hands and effort after the catch. That chasing down the interception must have also helped his cause.

With these moves, the Steelers now have 53 players on their roster, which breaks down position-by-position as follows:

three quarterbacks,
five running backs,
five wide receivers,
five tight ends,
eight offensive linemen,
six defensive linemen,
eight linebackers,
10 defensive backs,
and three specialists.

5 WIDE!

I knew we'd keep 5 WR. Would have been silly not to. I'm glad Moye made it.

Oh well about Dwyer. If it was between Dwyer and Jones I'm glad they kept Jones.

I thought it would be between Dwyer and Redman and I just can't see Redman being healthy enough all year, but maybe he can.

Believe you can start adding players to the PS tomorrow. Beginning at 12:00 p.m., New York time, September 1st, teams may establish a Practice Squad of eight players by signing free agents who do not have an Accrued Season of free agency credit or who were on the 46-player Active List for less than nine regular season games during each of any Accrued Seasons. A player cannot serve on the Practice Squad for more than three seasons.

5 TEs? Are we carrying Spaeth and David Johnson on active 53? Seems weird. Can't we put one on IR/scheduled to return? For some reason I thought David Johnson was already on IR.

Dwyer was obvious. They did just about everything humanly possible to make sure he'd be replaced, and when injuries and things got in the way, they tried harder. They were NOT going into the season with him as the starter, and I really don't think they liked him at all.

Seeing Williams make the roster is pretty promising for a 6th-round rookie, but scratching my head a little bit about Carter. It's a shame about the way Hawthorne's offseason went; we barely even got a look at him. So I guess we still need to work on CB in the next couple of years, since our annual draft longshot came back as a big zero this time. Still, I think we kept all but one rookie from our draft, which I can't remember happening for a long time.

I really, REALLY, hope they don't waste the IR-designated-for-return on Spaeth. Like ... we'll be fine without him; you can trust me. It would suck if we did that and then someone actually useful got hurt.

So what are the rules with that? If you don't put someone on designated for return at the beginning of the season you can hold it open in case someone important gets hurt? How is David Johnson designated?

If the team places Spaeth on the Designated to Return List, which seems likely, he has to first be kept on the active roster than transferred over in a few days. So they'll then obviously be able to add another player.

Johnson is off PUP. He's fine. Probably will start Week 1.

Disappointed that Hawthorne was cut. I guess that he just didn't get enough time to show anything. Hopefully they'll sign him to the PS.

Too many roster spots being taken up by mediocre at best TEs. I agree with steelreserve. I really hope that we don't waste the IR to return designation on Spaeth.

Because of STs (last few roster spots Danny Smith had big say in). Our top gunner.

And is also our dimeback with the way the roster shaped up.

Why are you surprised Vince Williams made the roster? He was a draft pick and has been touted as a student of the game by the coaches and press.

being a 6th round pick is hardly a guarantee of making a roster. And there were a lot of other promising backup linebackers this year that were consistently running with the 2nd team, as before mentioned.
