SHAMARKO THOMAS
Strong Safety

The Steelers drafted him because they saw him as a safety capable of playing well against the run, and also as a safety they can use in coverage depending upon the offensive personnel and the down-and-distance. On Monday night at FedEx Field, Shamarko Thomas (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/shamarko-thomas/5cb3b5e6-1b08-4371-8316-0bf10dd8a3a1/) showed he can be up to the task.

On a second-half running play, Thomas knifed into the backfield and hit RB Chris Thompson to force a fumble that Terry Hawthorne (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/terry-hawthorne/f7b19889-f4a6-4e7e-a4c3-5859971a5393/) recovered. On the subsequent series, on a third-and-8, Thomas was in man-to-man coverage on WR Nick Williams. When Williams caught a short pass on a crossing route, Thomas made the tackle for a 2-yard gain to force a punt. Thomas finished with six tackles and the forced fumble.

I'm not sure how much I'd read into that at this point. It might just be a seniority thing in pre-season. By game #1 I would bet cash money that the Shark is our #1 back up SS (if not both safety positions), barring injury. I love that he can cover and play the run so he can be used in different packages. I think his height played to our advantage, in the sense that it's probably the only reason we were able to draft him where we did. So far our steal of the draft.

It's always nice when a guy that you just really want to root for shows it on the field. It's a feel good story all around, and I especially like how much Troy and Ryan love the kid and want to mentor him and how eager he is to learn from them. From everything I've read about the kid he deserves all the success in the world.

I really like what I've seen from Shamarko. Much better than any of the other young safeties that we've seen come and go for years.
