Dude is going to be a freakin monster !
Watching him last night he was playing much faster than everyone else. It seemed everyone else was playing on a beach (sand) and he was the only one running around on solid ground!
He's want to watch! Just hope he adds more meat to his bones soon!

Lmao yet the writers And Tom Bradley feel very different. He has a long way to go and was owned all night. Has no moves and is weak

Must have watched a different game. I saw him consistently double-teamed and push a block off his feet about five feet. I wouldn't call it a great performance, but saying he was owned is downright laughable. His speed tracking down a reverse (or whatever the play was) was impressive. I saw somebody immediately step in to their first (pre-season) game and play AT LEAST at the same level as Harrison played last year.

His hustle was fantastic to watch and he made some fantastic plays. It wasn't perfect but this is his first NFL action, he will learn

:rofl2: Really? How quickly people downplay a players abilities when they leave the Steelers.
Nothing against Jarvis. I loved the pick and hope that he does turn in to a Beast, but he's not there yet and made plenty of mistakes last night, which is to be expected.

I think my own modest opinion of last night's performance lands somewhere in the middle. I love his athleticism and non-stop motor, but so far his skills as a pass rusher aren't at an NFL level. I was a little surprised not to see him get to the QB at all against scrub left tackles. He just doesn't seem to have the strength or the moves to beat an NFL LT one on one. Of course this was just one pre-season game, but I don't see him getting much stronger or mastering new pass rushing skills this year. I wouldn't expect him to rack up many sacks except when he comes free or chases a QB down after too much time spent in the pocket.
But I'd love to be proved wrong.

I saw the same thing last night, didn't think he played bad but I did think he would have done some damage against the back ups, he will be fine but not ready to give him Harrison status.

Aside from this article look for Bradley's comments after the game last night, he knows a thing or two about defense and jones being a beast was no where near what he thought

He's a future beast, as in a beast after he polishes up his game and learns some moves and learns to get past a pass-blocking O-lineman
You have to look at all the rookies through an understanding of where they are at in their career. I'm very optimistic about Jones. I liked a lot of what I saw and think that time and reps are going to make him into a heck of a player.
Was he a "Star" last night?
No.
But there was more to like then not like. What he was....was a very talented rookie LBer trying to play in one of the most complex defenses in the NFL. Talent is only half of the equation and anything I didnt like can be atttributed to his learning the system. Tons of potential and every indication that he will be worth watching.

and watching interviews of him yesterday on steelers.com he kept reiterating he wants to be a student of the game .... with that in mind if he watches enough film , buries his head in the playbook and pesters the living shit out of his team mates that have been in the system longer to learn how to be the consummate pro and becomes successful at that aspect of his game , couple that with the athletic ability he possesses and he could very well be the all time leading sack artist for this team before it is all said and done

I don't doubt for a second that he will be a hard worker and master the playbook. But what I saw was more of a lack of strength and one on one technique than flat out getting the plays wrong. Definitely things that can be worked on, and I have no doubt he'll get stronger and learn whatever he needs to learn eventually. I agree with you 100% that there is more to like and dislike, and of course it isn't fair to judge him on one game (but hey, that's all we've got and it's fun to talk about). My only questions are about what he'll be able to do this season, not about his future. It seems like he could be used best by moving him around so the offense doesn't know if or from where he'll be coming. If he can slip through without taking a head on block I think he has the athleticism to get to the QB more often than not.

I do not see it as a lack of strength at all , in fact quite the contrary from where I sit , he stands up the tackle and even shoves them back plenty good enough , he plays with leverage ....
what I see him having to work on is developing his other moves because there is nothing wrong with his bull rush it is just that is all he has shown , he needs to learn the proper way to shed the blocker instead of staying locked up on them and trying to manhandle them continually ( that will tire you out more than the guys you are up against ) ... the more he talks to the other players and picks their brains , talks and listens to the coaching staff , and practice time these things will improve .... its just going to take some time

Okay, I can buy that. I guess I was throwing strength and technique in together since he couldn't beat a LT one on one. I also heard Keisel in a sideline interview saying that he's impressed with Jones but that he needs to get stronger. The playbook part I'm not worried about, but mastering the technique it takes to beat NFL linemen is tough. I'm sure he'll get there eventually. I just wish James Harrison was still on the team to teach him some stuff. Woodley isn't necessarily the best mentor since he relies more on his strength than anything else. But that's what we have coaches for I suppose.
As far as mentor/rookie relationships go I like the situation at safety much better. Clark and Troy seem to love Thomas and he is an eager learner. I just wish we still had a quality OLB to teach Jones the ropes since he too seems like an eager learner.

I agree with Dwins. I also think strength is overrated, one only needs to watch the last two years of Ziggy Hood *youtube training videos*, then watch him on the field to see this. Playing patty cakes with an O-lineman is a win for them. I think Jones will improve each week. He's going to be a good one imo.

If you can't figure out the difference between the 2 situations that's on you I never said any should start solely because of their draft position.

So now you are saying Bell's draft status has nothing to do with claiming he is the starter? Are you claiming Jones is not the most talented OLB on the roster?

you said they did not spend a 2nd round pick on a guy to come in and compete , they spent a 2nd round pick for him to be the starter

You must have problems with reading comprehension because I didn't say that anywhere.
Let me spell it out for you. Anyone who would even suggest that Jones is already playing at a level above what James played at last year, especially the second half, is simply delusional.

I agree I like jones a lot but I think we are getting ahead of ourselves comparing him to Harrison. Jones really hasn't played against 1st team offenses yet and I think there are a few things he still needs to master in run defense. With that being said I also wouldn't mind seeing jones start over worlids because worlids brings nothing to the table.

Oh, so now you're qualifying your remarks?
Look, I'd love for Harrison to have drop-kicked his agent to the curb and re-sign with the Steelers because I truly believe he has another year or two left in his tank... if he's healthy. But there's no delusion in looking at his performance last year and seeing him slowed by injuries and age. His statistics tell the story plain and simple: it was his worst year starting as a professional.

I agree completely about wishing he were still here since he seems to be healthy now. The only thing I'd like to add about Harrison's value to us last year is that stats don't really tell the tale with him. The games where he played, although he was never 100%, he helped bring the defense to a whole different level. I'm not sure if it's like a Troy factor (where DL is willing to do more things on defense when he's in because he trusts him) or his ability to read plays from experience, or his ability to fire up the rest of the D with his presence. Possibly all of the above. But there's something about JH that will be very difficult to replace. Almost (but I know it's not exactly the same) like a Ray Lewis factor.

I'm not even sure you know what the word means. "No, I'm not qualifying anything" after you just said "...especially the second half of the season". What? The first half doesn't count? Nor did I say Jarvis is playing better - I said he's playing AT LEAST as well, certainly no worse and MOST certainly not owned as a previous poster suggested.
The bottom line is Harrison had a mediocre season and the Steelers decided he wasn't worth it. I don't know what's so hard to understand about that.

This is the last time that I'll even address this. I didn't say "only the second half of the season" or even "only the first half of the season". If you really want to compare Jarvis first preseason game with even the first games of last year when James was very obviously still healing, then go ahead. Nothing against Jarvis but he STILL didn't compare.
This doesn't have anything to do with the Steelers not re-signing James. I haven't even mentioned that so I don't know why you keep bringing it up.
Here is your EXACT statement in case if you forgot.
"I saw somebody immediately step in to their first (pre-season) game and play AT LEAST at the same level as Harrison played last year."
Find me ONE person on this forum who agrees with you that Jarvis played as well in his FIRST preseason game as James played last season. There's already been a few people that agreed with me. No one has agreed with you.

As for their last comments: I don't need to find anyone on this forum to agree with me as I think their responses speak volumes. Any attempt on my part to add anything further just makes me look dumb for trying.
