Steelers announce knee surgery for Cortez Allen

Steelers cornerback Cortez Allen was stepping into a bigger role this year, but he won’t be stepping into it for a few weeks.

The Steelers released a statement from coach Mike Tomlin, saying Allen had “minor surgery on his right knee” today.

“We wanted him to get the surgery done now so he can begin rehabilitating immediately,” the statement read. “This surgery was a minor procedure and will have no long-term effects on his return to the field. We look forward to his rehabilitation process and having him back on the field in a couple of weeks.”

I was worried when I first saw the headline, but luckily its only a minor surgery. I think he'll start against the Titans.

Ugh. Dude can be on the WR like stink on shit, but will still give up the catch.

I know it is minor surgery but it's still surgery and this hurts a bit. Hopefully everything goes well and as scheduled.

I hope he is healthy for week 1.

Hmm, a shame we didn't keep a certain other CB, but it did seem that he wanted to go home.

I'm not too worried about Gay. He's grown up and has grown into a decent CB. Best 3rd CB in the nickel in the NFL when he went back to that spot. I think he'll be able to play decently well.

I wish Allen a fast and speedy recovery from surgery. Knee surgery is a serious matter. That part of the body is extremely fragile, especially when one considers the wear and tear of the NFL. I hope he is all right.

The good I take out of this is Shamarko Thomas has an opportunity to impress. I really would love to see him seize it and take advantage. He'd be great to have out there as a backup. One thing I've learned from watching the Steelers in recent years is you can NEVER have enough depth.

At Friday evening's practice Curtis Brown was playing outside CB with the 1st string during the 2-minute drill. Gay was at nickel. Not sure if it means much but that was the situation. No glaring mistakes by Brown, although Ben and the first-string offense didn't look sharp.

Curtis Brown missed practice today. Only 4 healthy corners.
