NCAA probe into WVU football alleges improprieties

A nine-month investigation by the NCAA has turned up improprieties in the West Virginia University football program.

After interviewing more than 80 people, the NCAA has accused the football program of breaking five major rules and one secondary rule. Most of the problems cited involved non-coaching staff.

The announcement was made Thursday by West Virginia director of athletics Oliver Luck. Luck read from a statement and took no questions. West Virginia football coach Bill Stewart was not available for comment.

West Virginia's athletic department received a notice of allegations from the NCAA earlier this week which focused primarily on the function and number of graduate assistants, student managers and other non-coaching staff in the football program from 2005-09. Two head coaches directed the program during that span: Former coach Rich Rodriguez --- who left for Michigan in Dec., 2007 --- and Stewart, who succeeded Rodriguez.
