The Denver Broncos released running back Willis McGahee, the team's starter the past two seasons, from their crowded backfield on Thursday.
McGahee, pushing 32, is coming off a significant knee injury that sidelined him for the final two months last season and was set to make $2.5 million in 2013. McGahee said earlier this week that he's 100 percent now and has no restrictions running.
McGahee rushed for 1,930 yards with eight touchdowns in 25 games with the Broncos.

If we could get him for anything close to what Dwyer is making, get rid of the fat man and take a guy you know "gets it" at this level. Even if he's only got a year or two in him, he was still pretty productive last season until he got hurt, and he honestly didn't take all that much pounding with the Ravens, except the hit that Clark put on him.

As bad as it may look for that defender to get knocked back like that, it's pretty damn impressive at how quickly he regained his feet and was running.

Actually, the athleticism displayed by McGahee to "swat" the defender while barely breaking stride is equally impressive to me.

That's the hit I thought of when I read the headline. 32 year old with knee problems? Pass.

word out of Denver his knee is fine and he is in great shape , the reason for the release is his contract they wanted him to take less after drafting Ball and having Moreno show up late last year for them and with Hillman sitting there as well they have a crowded backfield and figured they did not need to spend nearly 3 mill on McGahee when so many other options where on the table that could get the job done ( when you have Peyton Manning any serviceable RB is a dam good Back ) ....

So what would be so wrong with us having a backfield of Bell, McGahee and Leach?
For the same price as what we got? - - the bitter clingers must stop with idolizing our below average RB talent back-ups
It's the offseason

Call Shero if you don't know how to do it, git er done
yea verily

While leach is a complete beast as a run blocker he does not possess the pass catching ability we need at FB in this offence especially this offence that most likely will be missing Heath Miller at full speed for the first half of the season , someone has to make up for his touches and I suspect part of that load will be given to Will Johnson who has shown to have good hands ( former TE himself ) if not for the Miller situation I would be on board with bringing in Leach but we need Johnson on the field ......
I am all for McGahee however

MaGahee is done like fried chicken. No way he ever becomes a Steeler unless it is a coach. He might be done in the NFL.

what are you basing your " gut feeling " on ?
Only the timing, not the news itself, is a surprise after the team drafted running back Montee Ball (http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013/profiles/montee-ball?id=2539341) in the second round of the 2013 NFL Draft (http://www.nfl.com/draft/2013). McGahee turns 32 this season and is coming off a torn medical collateral ligament and broken leg. But the injuries no longer are a problem, at least according to the team's offensive coordinator, Adam Gase. Gase said McGahee was "back in great shape" (http://www.denverbroncos.com/multimedia/videos/Gase-McGahee-Back-in-Great-Shape/d4e6addb-cfb0-459a-8ffe-1ee170a8e271) and looked healthy this week.

He was on pace for well over 1,000 yards last year until he got injured. And if memory serves me, it was an MCL injury plus a fracture, neither of which are the same type of career-threatening injuries as a torn ACL or Achilles tendon. He might not have more than a year or two left, but I wouldn't write him off yet.

Broken leg. Another FWP.
McGahee's game is not predicated on speed like FWP was so not nearly as much of a factor IMO

I wouldn't write him off yet, either. But who is going to sign him with the knowledge that they might get a year maybe two out of him at best when there are plenty of capable guys on the market who are much younger? He probably gets signed eventually, he can still play. This just doesn't feel like a Steelers move to me at all.

A lot of teams will sign a guy to get a year or two out of them, no strings attached. It depends on what you're looking for. If you think he's the missing piece, go ahead and sign him until you can do something better. If this had happened before we used a high draft pick on Bell, I'd be all for it, but at this point I could really take it or leave it.

Exactly.
Especially IF we were looking at him at around 1.3 mil. in lieu of Dwyer at $1.3 mil.

If Bell shows any ability, I wouldn't mind bringing in McGahee to show him the ropes, much like Ward used to do for the younger receivers, and Bettis did for Parker.

Nah, McGahee would have his hands full just getting familiar with the coaches/system to try to teach anyone else.
Besides, does McGahee really even fit in a ZBS? Not so much

Yeah, but there's a lot more to it than that. Remember Bettis talking to FWP about how to freeze tacklers by running at them and turning later rather than sooner? There's so many fine points like that, that I think would probably help out a new up and coming kid. ZBS can be taught by anyone, but it takes a running back to really know the little tricks of the trade. We don't have anyone to pass that knowledge on right now.
