Fuck. Looks like Beachum is the top back up at every position?
The new Trai Essex. Versatile, meaning we can put him at every position and pretend he isnt shitty at most of them.

i am sad to see him go, but to say beachum sucks if far from the truth the kids struggled, but he would correct his technique and get better sometimes in the same game the more he played the more impressed i was of him, but thanks for al the good and bad memories best of luck to him now please send us back Urbik

he's been getting a bunch of snaps at guard and center too lol. only confirms the obvious about the O-line depth imo

Nice find.
Unfortunately Beachum can only replace 1 injured lineman at a time.
So we're about 1/3rd of the way there.

Agreed. He had his moments, but he tended to get bullied around pretty badly by the better interior D-linemen. the more you saw of him the less you liked his play. In other words as a pinch hitter he could come in and play respectable. But give the other team a week to tear him down on film and he tends to stand out like a sore thumb.

I wish Doug the best but as a Steeler fan I dont like the way the depth is right now on the line. Beachum may end up being a good utility guy but he is in his 2nd year. We are way too damn young there. Letting Starks and Legursky go have left us bare. Im sorry but Im not a fan of these 2 moves.

I like him as a person. But you can improve on him. At one time I thought his game was ascending but last year it became painfully obvious it was going the other way. Maybe it was just a bad year? Regardless as you said, his kind is a dime a dozen. Wont be hard to maintain his standard of play. In fact I would say even for a back up it became neccessary to improve upon, thus no effort was made to keep him.

Great now who is our fullback?
Which reminds me, any word on David Johnson? Hmmm, still listed on the roster.

Yup, he signed a one-year deal this offseason. Still have Will Johnson, too. They'll probably battle for one spot.

Well, that's a bummer. When Pouncey gets his high ankle sprain, guess we'll have to think of something else this year.

I liked Legursky at center. Sad to see him go in that regard. Didn't think much of him as a guard though. But I don't see anyone in camp who is an improvement over him at center. So I think the suggestion that we're going to be better off without him is a tad premature and over presumptuous.

Maybe not. We used DJ as more of an H-back correct? Maybe they can both stick if Will is good enough at fullback and DJ can serve as a backup fullback and 3rd tight end. Unless we already have another obvious 3rd tight end on the roster. I cant imagine we wont take tight end depth seriously since Heath is a question mark and all

Nope, I think you're wrong here. You need to break this assessment between him as a center and a guard. For some reason, he couldn't make the switch to guard. As a center however, he didn't get bullied once that I remember. He was absolutely solid. My guess is that as a Guard, he didn't have the footwork/speed to deal with stunting LBs or DTs that had a tad amount of room to work. Whereas at Center, it's pretty much pure straight ahead, or take a step back and assess which Guard needs help.

Based on your assessment I can't help but wonder if we would benefit by utilizing pouncey at guard.
I also wonder if they felt Legursky did not have the "footwork/speed" for the new offense they are installing.

If you remember last season they started Pouncey at guard, I think it was against the Browns, and started Legurskey at center. And it didn't work out very well. Doug really struggled.
As much as anything this is about money. Because even though Doug didn't get paid that much relative to most veterans, he still would get a lot more than an undrafted free agent rookie or lower round draft pick. So I think they beleive they can get similiar quality of play with a rookie at less cost, and if they get the right rookie he might prove to have a higher ceiling than Legurskey.

If they got a competent Center and started Pouncey at Guard, the OLine would be on its way to being NASTY good...with DeCastro on one side and Pouncey on the other...

Yes, he was an H-Back. And to an extent, so was Johnson. He would sometimes line up at TE and I'm sure as he progresses and becomes more comfortable with a year under his belt, we'll throw more at him.
So I don't see them keeping two guys at the same position. Unless Heath starts the year on PUP which while early, doesn't seem too likely. Otherwise, you have Johnson & Johnson, Miller, Spaeth, Paulson. Of course, Paulson not guarantee to make the game.

Here was an interesting article from February on the Beachum / Legursky situation vis a vis Pouncey.
Legursky's gone but it's still interesting conversation.
So, for the sake of argument (and let's face it; what else do we have to argue about in mid-February?), let's say that Foster is not an option. That leaves us with Beachum and Doug Legursky. Let's forget about Legursky for a second and focus on Beachum. Once again, some in the media seem to be high on Beachum. Some of the fine contributors to BTSC are also high on Beachum.
To those that think highly of Beachum, I ask them this: Right now, is Beachum a better left guard than Legursky is a center?
If you think that Legursky is a better center then Beachum is a left guard, then we are in agreement. Besides the pre-season, Beachum has no experience at playing left guard, Legursky started, and by most accounts seemed to play well, in a Super Bowl. Therefore, I think the assertion that Legursky is a better center than Beachum is a left guard is a pretty strong one.
To take that assertion one step further, are we a stronger offensive line with Pouncey at center and Beachum at guard, or with Legursky at center and Pouncey at left guard? Remember this about Legursky also: He is not going to cost anything. Once again, I'd rather have a chance at resigning Keenan Lewis and not cutting Brett Keisel and/or James Harrison, than I would at paying Ramon Foster any money at all.

As a center Doug was solid. Guard he struggled some. I always thought he was better than Pouncey. I just really hope that choosing not to bring back Max and Doug dont bite us in the ass.
