Last year the #Steelers (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/search?q=%23Steelers&src=hash) didn't get David DeCastro signed until July 24th, so they are WAY ahead of schedule this year.

Yup .. first working day after we got our cap space from Colon's June 1 release, so no surprise there.

Speaking of which, can anyone explain to me why they have a June 1 release designation that works differently for cap space than releasing a guy in, say, March or April? And for that matter, if you've officially designated a guy as a June 1 release, why do you have to be under the salary cap every single minute between then and June 1? It seems like if you know the space is available, it's just silly that you can't use it until some arbitrary date.

edit: Just to be clear, I know that the June 1 release has to do with spreading out the cap hit from signing bonuses over two seasons; my question is just why the cap space is held hostage in the meantime, which is just dumb. You always hear about teams being temporarily $10M or $20M over the cap during other parts of the offseason, so why is it strictly locked down now?

Glad this is out of the way.

Because I think you have to be under the cap before free agency starts. The NFL doesn't want you to sign a ton of guys while over the cap and then worry about the cap after that. That's what I would think.

Yeah, that makes sense for the start of the year ... but from what I understand about the June 1 rule, you can't decide to un-cut someone; in fact, they can go out and sign with other teams before June 1. So it's not like the cap space is going anywhere, it's just a bunch of money that sits there for no reason. You would think everyone would want it to not be that way - the owners so they could go out and spend it on free agents before all the good ones are gone, and the players so there would be more money available. If you have $5M coming free now, all you can do with it is sign journeyman bums or your own draft picks.

Glad to see he was signed. I'm glad the Steelers are taking care of this now and not when training camp is beginning.
