The expectation is that the most significant improvement is seen in NFL players between their first and second seasons. So, too, it can be for offensive coordinators as well.

Todd Haley is in his second season as the Steelers offensive coordinator, and his performance in 2012 was 8-8 just like the rest of the football team. Mediocre. Not good enough.

Adding statistics to the adjectives shows that the Steelers offense ranked 22nd in the NFL in scoring and 26th in turnovers and 14th in red zone efficiency and 26th in rushing and tied for 21st in sacks allowed. But those statistical inadequacies are not as damning as the memory of the times the unit failed to take advantage of opportunities or situations during the times in games where the outcome is determined..........

Last year was interesting to say the least. The team had talent but for some reason didn't excel. Definitely lacked motivation. You could sense it was a 'reloading' year. Hopefully, we are on the right track to another SB with the youngsters coming in.

I don't know why, but I am really excited about this season. Really! It might be ignorant-rookie-bliss, but I have the best feeling about the guys coming in. Even some of the UDFA's. And...sad to say... I kind of like Todd Haley...as a coach. He comes off a little douchey, but I like his coaching style.

There were all types of signs last year that cracks existed in communication, and in the lockerroom. But when you're in the midst of it, it's sometimes hard to tell. That's why hindsight is twenty-twenty. And in hindsight, Ben using hand signals from the previous system when he got frustrated and couldn't communicate with his receivers was a distinct sign. The frustration of some of the players and what looked like a lack of effort was another sign (I'm having to wonder more and more if it was a lack of effort, or confusion over assignment, route, etc). If that confusion goes far enough, then players on the OL won't be in the right spots, and they'll start tripping over each other, young players especially, and that causes injuries.

You can almost see the progression through the season too. At first, there was a basic understanding on the offense. They worked decently well together. Then some of the cracks were exploited by the other teams' defenses. They fixed it for the middle of the season, but once that fix was exposed, they hit a wall in the learning curve, especially without their main QB.

So yeah, it makes a person wonder. Without the distractions, in a second year of a system/philosophy, when players are coming back with some hurt pride, just how strong are they going to be this year? it just may be a nice change of pace.

I'll take a top 15 offense. I will be extremely pleased if we crack the top 10.

I'll take an offense that can score at will in the red zone. Then Todd H can jump around and smile like a goofball.

I just hope they find out why we have so many injuries early on. You have to remember injury played a major role last year too. Are we doing something different in summer camps, OTA's, ? Or, not doing something ?
