Jack Butler, the great Steelers cornerback inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August after a 50-year wait, died this morning at UPMC Shadyside Hospital.

Butler, 85, entered the hospital in November when a lingering staph infection, developed from a knee injury that ended his career in 1959, attacked an artificial knee replacement, his son, Mike, said. The infection persisted and Butler died about 7:45 a.m., his son said.

"His heart just stopped,'' said Mike Butler, who was hired by the Steelers as a scout on Thursday. "He was completely lucid last night, my sister and brother made him a root beer float and he went to sleep. He never complained, never said anything hurt.".............

RIP Jack Butler. One of the best to ever play the position. And I sincerely meant that.

I still occasionally talk to Mike Butler and sent him this message a few hours ago with his reply below. Just wanted to share it with you all.

I know it's been awhile since we've talked but I wanted to send my and Steelers Universe's sincerest condolences of Jack's passing. A great man with an equally great career who Steelers' fans will never forget.

I know he's 85 but this is a bit of a shock. He looked so spry last year at the HOF ceremony. Anyway glad he got in last year and glad he was able to enjoy it.

As to his death, just shows you there's no such thing as routine surgery, particularly if you're in your 80's. I think Dick Shaap died from a similiar staph infection following a knee or hip replacement.

Anyway RIP Mr Butler.
