I don't think there is a chance in hell Woodley could handle inside. However, I do think Worilds could probably play there. And if Worilds and Woodley both play well outside, Jones could definitely play inside. If I understand correctly there are a number of teams who were looking at him as an inside linebacker.

I think it's important to point out just how much like James Harrison Jones is. Plays with the same tenacious malice, gets leverage and swings that arm to force fumbles as if it's second nature. I think he really looks up to Harrison, too.

As a Georgia fan, I've had the pleasure of watching Jarvis Jones live and on TV. We will be very very happy with this pick. He is a player that can take over a game. He has that tough, nasty Steeler D type mentality that we all love. I'm stoked and was hanging on the edge of my seat waiting to get him. I was a little worried we might have to trade up with the saints to get him though.

Really like the pick. No, he does not have that same level of explosiveness that say, Jordan or Ansah have. But he's a flat-out playmaker who is strong, understands leverage, and not only holds his own against the run, but excels there. And if you're going to play for Dick LeBeau, you're going to have to be strong against the run.

Yea have heard the knock on him vs Jordan and Ansah but at the end of the day all the explosion in the world does not matter much if that is all you do is explode , in the results category Jones has more production in 1 year than Ansah and Jordan have in their careers combined ...

That is a fact that so often gets lost by the talking heads because they put far to much emphasis on combine and pro day results , I prefer results between the white lines on game day and Jarvis Jones provides those results so I too Love the pick

So glad for ESPN and NFL putting so much stock into stupid combines that anyone that's good working out can do well in. I've seen him play and he's an absolute BEAST! This is what I'm most excited about. He's a forced fumble waiting to happen.

I was thinking... if Worilds and Woodley light it up... and we end up doing what we did with Timmons after Joey left, playing Jones inside, our linebackers will be insane. The pass rush we could get out of Worilds, Jones, Timmons and Woodley (all good pass rushers) would be absolutely awesome. Teams could not gameplan around that. The linebackers would almost all be interchangeable. I'm obviously excited to see Jones at OLB where he will most likely end up, but the other scenario is feasable and would be very appealing especially since it would eliminate the need for an ILB once Foote totally loses it. Of course this depends on Worilds and Woodley making the most of themselves, but it could happen.

I watched this video some time ago, but perhaps a few of you haven't. Hopefully by now you have read the bio of Georgia outside linebacker Jarvis Jones, who was selected with the 17th pick of the first round of the 2013 NFL draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers. After reading that, you can hear him tell more of his backstory in the sit down interview that he had with Gene Wojciechowski back in December. Jones talks about losing his brother and getting a second chance.

My thoughts:

I guess he seemingly fits the Harrison mould. But, to me at least, he looks more like a Buck ILB than a 3-4 OLB. But, I do trust our FO.
One thing I may never know is, would they still have taken him over Kenny Vaccaro had the Saints not picked him.

I am not unhappy with this pick. By all accounts, we got a steal and a young man most felt fits the Steelers LB mould. I'm most excited about his high motor.

Finally, I officially hate the Saints.

What is this stripping the ball away you are talking about? What is a "turnover"? :chuckle:

Another article on Jones, Ike Taylor's workout buddy:

http://www.pittsburghsportsreport.com/PSR/node/5583

Perhaps most importantly, Jones has already been working out and talking with current Steelers cornerback Ike Taylor, whom he considers one of his best mentors.

“He just talked about how great the program is and what their defense means up there,” said the linebacker on his new teammate. “It means a whole lot. They take pride in what they do.”

Steeldude

I don't see him as a Harrison mold. He may gets sacks, strips etc..., but not in the same brute force fashion Harrison accumulated them. Harrison is built to hit hard. I see Jones as a little more finesse rather than pure power and punishing hits.

It's done for copyright reasons. We can be held liable if an author of an article feels we allowed their story to be posted in full without their consent and/or without a link. That is also why some stories from major news outlets (the Trib being one) that automatically generates a link whenever you post a story from their website. If you would have taken the time to read the stickied thread in this forum's index page, you would have known that. So if you're going to post an excerpt of a story, the least you can do is post a link to the source.

I still like what Colbert said:

When he worked out at his pro day and he ran the 4.9 we were happy because we knew that we had a chance.

We didn’t even talk to Jarvis at the combine because we didn’t think there was any chance that he’d get to us. When he ran the 4.9, the first thing I did was go over and see his agent and set up the visit because I knew that we had a chance.

Then he continued with the workout and it was off the charts impressive. It just verified what we thought of him in college. This kid, when you watch him play, I don’t care what he runs.

He’s a football player in every phase of the game and that was what was really exciting. When the time wasn’t quite what others were looking for, we were excited.

Still not totally sold. What makes me the most nervous about the pick is everyone says to ignore the measurables (and they are all terrible -- even besides the forty time) and look at the tape. I realize people mean beyond the highlight reels. But highlight reels are I have to go on and I still don't get it. Because look at the video above...then look at these. Everyone looks good in highlights!

Jason Worilds --

If Tomlin and Colbert feel this good about the pick, I'm on board. Was hesitant beforehand, thinking the guy might only be a "high motor" with little else to offer. But, like all rookies, he'll have a chance to learn a pass rush move or two and how to cover. I think this is a win-win. We have to get more pressure on the QB and this should certainly help stoke the flames underneath Worilds.

Can't wait to see reaction to this:
In my opinion Jarvis Jones will not be in the same caliber of pass rusher as Von Miller (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/131195/von-miller) and DeMarcus Ware (http://www.sbnation.com/nfl/players/3442/demarcus-ware). However I do see a player with the potential to be in that next tier of pass rusher and produce similar to LaMarr Woodley.

According to the #Steelers (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/search?q=%23Steelers&src=hash) online store, Jarvis Jones will wear #91 http://bit.ly/10Gbah7 (http://t.co/qvpnAiTulB)

Still not totally sold. Everyone looks good in highlights [/QUOTE]

that is true

but we're not giving him back, so I guess we''re just gonna have to wait and see if they can make a real Steelers LB out of him

I realize we are not giving him back. Thanks for the penetrating analysis. My point is that from the available college highlight tapes, it looks like Worilds, Carter, and Jones all share the common trait of being able to run around slow-footed, less than nimble physically over-matched college tackles as well as slip inside against interior lineman that were too slow to get out to their blocking assignment. Great. Only problem is that skill set has not exactly translated to almost any NFL success for Worilds and Carter and they are, at least by the measurable numbers, far superior athletes.

How in the heck does it tell a different story for Jarvis Jones? The only other NFL player drafted in the last 15 years with his size speed #s that has an NFL sack is Kory Bierman. Not saying that is all we can expect from Jones, but a guy that is any sentence with Kory Bierman at 17 makes me nervous.

Where did Worilds and Carter play college ball?

Slow footed SEC linemen >>>>>>>>>>>>>> Slow footed Big Ten or Slow footed ACC linemen.

He's also supposedly a stand up kinda guy. I know that doesn't translate to football skills, but at least we can feel somewhat safe there won't be any news headlines and suspension due to off-the-field extracurriculars. The kind of risk that's taken with a guy like Ogletree or Ta'amu.

ahhhhh so

well fuck it - my words will not be smothered so easily

This is a simple rule that applies to any forum, including Steelers Fever. Depending on the source of the article, it's recommended that the full article isn't posted and that a link to the article is attached to the thread. If not, we get copyright claims via the contact us form of the message board, and it's hard enough with all the other bullshit we get through that form, so all we ask is that members refrain from posting full stories and provide links. Quite simple, really.

Yea have heard the knock on him vs Jordan and Ansah but at the end of the day all the explosion in the world does not matter much if that is all you do is explode , in the results category Jones has more production in 1 year than Ansah and Jordan have in their careers combined ...

That is a fact that so often gets lost by the talking heads because they put far to much emphasis on combine and pro day results , I prefer results between the white lines on game day and Jarvis Jones provides those results so I too Love the pick

good to see you jumping in again

Well, I was at one point mixed on Jones because you want to see that elite trait that can translate at the next level since everyone is bigger/faster/stronger/yadda yadda. And production in college doesn't have to carry over to the next level (examples too numerous to list).

But yeah, have to love the comment Colbert made about loving the fact Jones ran a 4.92.

Glad to be back. Don't know how much I'll be around during the actual draft, but I'll be on after to talk about our picks.

Chris Carter --
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iMVtxfRt8ok

Heck, Bruce Davis looked alright on highlight tapes!

Why do you just have highlights to go on? There's plenty of full game tape cut up around the Internet. Just have to search for it. No one should ever look at highlight videos. Ever.

No, a mod or owner should get paid to use the ban-hammer on you. Don't like the site. Leave. Like it, then stick around. But don't think you're doing us a favor by doing so. Sorry to be so blunt but, well, your last few posts have pretty much stoked my ire, knowing what the board owners have done for us over the last couple of years.

Fair enough. Perhaps I should re-phrase that I don't have the time or inclination/knowledge to watch a ton of college game tape and make like I'm gonna figure it all out. I am simply asking the question that based on the common highlights shown for the three players, what is it that separates Jones from the two OLB's recently drafted - Worilds and Carter?

Again, I am not trying to be critical of anyone nor am I trying to trash the pick. I am simply a bit anxious that Jones (the 17th pick in the draft) will not be in a position to contribute much in his rookie year, and I want to know what should I be looking for that others see as a projectable and tangible skill that will lead to NFL success. Further in what manner does Jones have that skill or skills in a way that other players already on the roster do not.

Instead of complaining, and writing a bunch of self-congratulatory posts -- you could try and contribute something meaningful to the conversation. Over 500 posts and I don't think you have much to say in any of them.

Let Worilds compete with Woodley. Maybe Woodley can play inside. If not, maybe Worilds can play inside.

Woodley in coverage? He's too fat for that(although I could be completely wrong)..... It would be nice to see him stay healthy and produce this year.. Maybe he needs to feel the heat of somebody with the ability to take his job...

The hell with Woodley moving to ILB. He wants to be fat and slow, tell him to quit fucking around and get to 300 pounds so he can play DE. Then he can fight it out with Hood, and whoever loses gets his sorry ass shown to the door.

Here's what NFL film's Greg Cosell had to say about Jarvis Jones.

Georgia OLB Jarvis Jones, who is the most ready of all the potential 3-4 outside linebackers in this draft. Ignore the 40-yard dash time. Put on the tape. Jones is a fluid athlete with sudden movement and quick change of direction. He showed body flexibility as a pass rusher, with excellent closing speed. I also liked his ability to transition from speed to power as a pass rusher. He got underneath the pads of bigger OL, and drove them back into the quarterback. He reminded me of Terrell Suggs, another player who ran a supposedly slow 40 when he came out of Arizona State

http://sports.yahoo.com/blogs/nfl-shutdown-corner/greg-cosell-mock-draft-picks-1-16-142026171--nfl.html

I've always put a lot of stock in what Cosell says. No one watches more film and knows what they're seeing than him.
