Did anyone besides James Harrison or his agent not know that the best deal he was going to be offered was the one he turned down from the Steelers in March?

What an idiot

The deal includes base salaries of $1.4 million and $1.1 million, workout bonuses of $100,000 each year, and per-game roster bonuses which could total $300,000 this year and $250,000 next year.

That means his maximum payout this year is $3 million.

Compare that to the what he could have made in Pittsburgh, and he clearly lost this offseason.

According to an earlier report, Harrison turned down a 30 percent pay cut from the Steelers, which included a chance to earn the balance back in incentives.

Based on the $6.57 million in base salary he would have received before he was released, that comes out to around $4.5 million this year.

Looks like George Constanza math - Negotiate for a lesser deal

The 'bonus' monies for each game he is active may not work out for him either, taking in the fact that he hasn't played a complete season in 3 yrs..

Harrison rolls the dice in contract negotiations and loses $3M a year ... we roll the dice in contract negotiations with our RFAs and lose $3M a year ... no one in Pittsburgh seems to be doing so good at math these days.

Also: I momentarily read the title as "Harrison's dead," which would be much more shocking.

This is a big reason why he retains an agent. This is Parise's fault more than it is Harrison's.

No, but it seems to me it would be his agent's job to know how much interest he would garner on the open market before advising his client to reject offers out of hand. This is an epic fail on Parise's part.

I'm not sure any agents expected the VET market to be so dry this year, but hte signs were there when Harrison was offered our final deal. I've even read that some agents thin there is a bit of collusion going on keeping market prices at historical lows. What I think is the rookie wage scale is coming into the equation. The players thought it would mean more money for the Vets, but what it really means is more money for 1 or 2 superstars and a whole lot of vets out of work because "average" players are more easily replaced through cheap draft picks.

Reading the numbers makes me want to puke.

Glad it's draft day.

It's not as bad as it seems when you consider the Steelers have to pay him $4.93mm this year too

That's just cap hit, that's not really dollars they have to pay out.

that is the hit on money already paid out in the form of signing bonus's and restructures pushed into future money against the cap

The fact that Harrison hasn't fired his agent may be an indication that James is the one who steered the bus off the cliff. After all the agent works for the client, not the other way around. My guess that's what happened. And that's no knock on James. Athletes tend to be ego centric and have an elevated view of self worth. So if they believe they're worth x, they think it's obvious the rest of the world thinks so too. In James mind it's still 2008 and he probably thought 30 other teams would be out there bidding up the price.

Do you think you can explain, in sort of simple terms, why that cap hit would have been absorbed in the JH deal if we had re-signed him (before cutting him, I mean)? Since the money was already paid out, but the cap hit deferred, why wouldn't it have gone against our cap this year in addition to whatever else we paid JH?

Did you do this or did you get it off a Bengals board? It is kind of disheartening. But for some reason he doesn't look quite as intimidating in the stripey outfit as he did in the Black and Gold. Then again, no one does. Maybe he'd have looked meaner in a Raiders uniform.
