I'M DRUNK CRYING SO HARD RIGHT NOW! MY PAP WOULD BE SO PROUD TO KNOW I FINALLY GET TO SEE THIS SPECIAL MOMENT IN MY LIFE. BEING BORN IN 92' MEANS I NEVER SAW THIS MOMENT, AND I DO NOW. Wow. This is amazing. I'm speechless.

I remember 92 well. I was sitting in a bar in Toledo Ohio with a bunch of people who could have cared less about the game. I was watching the game with no sound when I saw Sid Bream round third and score. You just knew it was the end of the run. I never suspected it would take 20 years, but nevertheless..... hopefully this is the beginning of a new era.

Another great start by Charlie Morton! Of course the back end of the bullpen is a little unsettling right now. But regardless I hope we can win the wildcard game ( if we can't win the division) because right now we've got 4 starters who are pretty locked in. I think we can make a series of it with it with anyone.

I never thought I'd have to wait more than half of my lifetime to see another winning Pirates team. Never been prouder of this organization than I am right now. Great group of guys and Clint Hurdle, as much as I may dislike his decision-making at times, deserves all the credit in the world for his role in turning this ship around. Same for Neal Huntington. Both guys who I wanted to see fired after last season.

Hope you enjoyed the champagne bath, boys! You deserve it!

Clint Hurdle for Manager of the Year.

While this team has taken a massive step. It all came into motion in 2011. 2011 was the Season where the Pirates show they were something. That something special was going on. They got off to a spectacular roll in 2012, but the Pirates still had some growing up to do. 2011 and 2012 were losing seasons, but they were losing seasons with HOPE.

We have witnessed the growth of a young contending team, and this time it didn't come apart just before it got started. Unlike many years past where the Bucs would have a would-be core and then trade it all away to the Yankees/Red Sox for nothing, they stayed the course this time. The Pirates have truly earned it in the highest degree.

I'm most happy for Cutch. Truly the Icon of the Pirates have needed all these years.

The bandwagoners will flood this thread if we make the playoffs....I will quote this post when they do

Is it happening yet??

Congrats on making the playoffs! you guys remind me of the Orioles last season. Damn shame my boys couldn't hang in there. Pitching and timly hitting was the killer in the second half. Ill be rooting for Pitt in the wild card game.

Pirates lose 4-2, they are all but eliminated from the Div Race. STL can clinch with either 1 win for them or 1 loss from us. We would need to win out 3-0 and have STL lose out 0-3 to tie them

They might as well get the division the Cardinals because they will not lose against the Cubs and I highly doubt we'll sweep the Reds. The great thing is that were a game ahead of the Reds in the standings and if we can just take the series, we'll host the wildcard game which is great because if its in Cincinnati, we may lose in the first round of the playoffs. We've struggled horribly in Cincinnati this year and stand a better chance at home. Plus, I'd rather see it in Pittsburgh since I've never seen a playoff game. I hope we can take the series this weekend. The Pirates have tomorrow off and we start the series Friday night. Lets go Bucs!

We have to take 2 of 3 in Cincy to host the wild card game because they beat us in the season series if we end up tied after the regular season is over. Is that right?

Oh well it's a bed of their own making. I'm not complaining. Just hope they can get the job done in the game that counts when this series is over wherever it's played.

Who would pitch the Wild Card game as it stands now?

Yeah, I agree. It's crucial for the Pirates to win this series and host the WC game, because I also think it's a guaranteed loss if they have to play in Cincy.

Not if Cole pitches. Right now he's got stuff that can beat anyone anywhere. Don't know that Hurdle has the guts or if things can be arranged where his start would fall there, but that's who I would go with.

And I'm not bashing Hurdle if he starts Liriano, AJ, or Morton over Cole, but I really think the visionary move would be to go with the guy who has the dominating stuff!

As it stands right now, Liriano is scheduled to pitch the WC game. But given his struggles on the road, I'd rather go with either Morton or Cole. But that would require using a spot-starter on Sunday, or coming back with Liriano on 3 days rest.

When you look back on the past 12 months or so and take a look at what this front office has done, it's really quite spectacular. A front office that most in Pittsburgh despised, went on to sign Martin, Liriano, Grilli, Melancon, and in August signed two offensive weapons in Byrd and Morneau that have propelled them into the playoffs.

gotta give em props, they deserve it

If the Pirates leveled out and played .500 ball the rest of the season I'd be ok with that. And if they just missed the playoffs after a 90 win season I'd be ok with that too. But to me playing 16 games under .500 for the rest of the season proves nothing and would mean more futility ahead. So what if you break the streak but still go on and stink year after year thereafter?

Finish the season with 90 wins or more and you've turned the corner and have something positive to take into the future.

Put it this way. If the Pirates stood today right around the .500 mark I'd agree wholeheartedly with your premise XT. But you start 48-30 then you can't barely back into a .500 season and gain any satisfaction from it.

I'm really glad the Pirates played better than .500 ball in the second half of the season. To me that's the most important thing they accomplished. They showed they can sustain a high quality of play when they were expected to play good. That's something you can build on.

I wonder who will start tomorrow's game? I'd say Locke, but why give the Reds hitters that sort of confidence before the Wild Card game?

It would lull them to sleep. Then they'd go out there against Liriano the next day and have to adjust to major league pitching.

After being the first team to 50 wins and at one point having the best record in the league, a .500 season would've been a disappointment. Yeah, they snapped the streak, but they didn't really accomplish anything besides mediocrity.

If they win tomorrow, they will finish the 2nd half of the season 44-37. Considering all of the ups and downs they have had, that's a pretty big accomplishment. It would also ensure that they do not have a single losing month all season.

However, if the Reds started anyone but Cueto on Tuesday, I'd say the Pirates win it. But Cueto absolutely owns the Pirates, so unfortunately I think they are one and done. And don't even get me started on the stupid idea of a 1-game play-in. I could literally rant for hours.

Cueto has given up just 1 run and 3 hits in 12.2 innings against the Pirates this season, and has pretty much owned them his entire career. So what, exactly, am I supposed to think? That they're all of a sudden going to take BP against him? Of the likely starting lineup, only Byrd (.583) and Pedro (.278) have had decent numbers against Cueto. Everyone else has struggled mightily against him.

For the Pirates to have any chance of winning that game, Liriano can't give up anything. I was much more confident when Latos was the scheduled starter.

The Reds tanked this series on purpose, knowing they only need to beat the Pirates once.

Why not go into the game with the guy who has owned them? The Reds have the advantage Tuesday Night.

Then again Homer Bailey owned the Pirates once upon a time too.

Yeah, but I would think they would have wanted the game at home rather than have to win in PNC. However, they did win 2 of 3 here last weekend (one of which was on a gift, but they aren't giving it back), so that should also give them some confidence. They definitely have the advantage, no doubt. Liriano can't screw up if they want to win.
