Aaron Smith, who knows a thing or two about playing defensive end, made a prediction Sunday about second-year man Ziggy Hood.
"I think he's going to be something special," Smith said.
It may take some time for Hood, a 2009 first-round pick, to prove Smith right since he is blocked from the starting lineup by his mentor as well as Brett Keisel.
Trying to get Hood on the field more this season would be a nice problem to have for the Steelers since that would mean Smith and Keisel stay healthy, something the duo hasn't done in the same season since 2006...................................
He has stood out in drills during the early part of training camp. Saturday, Hood delivered a welcome-to-the-NFL moment to rookie guard Maurkice Pouncey when he knocked down the first-round pick during a one-on-one drill.

From what I saw of Ziggy last season, I was pretty damned impressed and I hope Coach Mitchell concocts a way to get him a lot more playing time this season, as I strongly feel this kid is a diamond in the rough and as Aaron stated "something special".

Butbutbut the media told me Hood was a bust and Tomlin doesn't know how to draft.

I have high hopes for Ziggy....He, Woodley, Timmons, and (hopefully) Lewis form the corp of a talented young defensive crew. I still hope that Worthington or Harris end up being capable DE's on the other side of Hood.

You and me both!
It's now time for the young guys to step up and show that they can be the future on the d-line.

Well, the good news is that next year is going to be a deep draft year for DE's....but I hope we wont need to use a high pick and can rely on one of these two.

On a side note....I had said after the draft that I thought Gibson might end up being the better OLB over Worilds....so far that looks like it might be the case.

Actually....

Here is how he is doing.

In the linebackers-on-tight ends drill, rookie Jason Worilds was pancaked first by Heath Miller and later by David Johnson. The other rookie linebacker, Thaddeus Gibson, enjoyed far greater success against Matt Spaeth and Sean McHugh.

As for the rookie pass-rushers, Gibson scored wins in the line drills against right tackles Adams, Jonathan Scott and Ramon Foster, while Worilds only found success on the other side against Tony Hills.

But the surprise of the day may have been Ohio State's Thaddeus Gibson, who lost just one of his battles against the backs.

same here. Hopefully worthington can fit in the PS for this year. Harris would be taken away like he was last year by the panthers

In the long run I think Worilds will be better, but Gibson seems more ready to play NOW imo
