It is being reported this morning that the Steelers are interested in Dwight Freeney. I cannot copy and paste the link as I am browsing the internet on my Xbox but I've seen it multiple places. If anyone could provide a link that would be great.

Doubt it happens. Not sure how I'd feel about a signing.

Interesting. Freeney would be a stopgap at best though. Hard to get excited about it.

This is about all I could find on it:

Just like they were interested in Dumervill, Bradshaw, Jake Long, Ty Law, TJ Duckett...etc

The Steelers spent a 2nd round pick on Wordlis. It's high time we turn the page on 30+ year old linebackers and find out if this guy can play or not. Yes, I know Dumervill is 29, but you get my drift.

I'd take Freeney in a heartbeat - over 100 sacks, over 40 forced fumbles, he can still get it done even as a situational pass rusher from the outside....beats the hell out of the lumbering bears we have upfront on the DL too.

obvious smoke screen is obvious...the ravens are after him too. were just sabotaging their efforts, maybe upping the ante to raise his pricetag for our beloved rivals. same thing with dumervil

I read that after the smoke clears it will likely be Dumervill to Denver, Freeney to the Ravens. The question we have to ask is, will this put James out in the cooled.

For a team desperately trying to shed huge veteran salaries for older players clearly on the decline, such a move would make zero sense. That, and his skillset not even really fitting in a 3-4, which is primarily why the Colts bid him adieu in the first place.

Doubt we will get any of them

I can't buy this for Freeney and, like FS76 said we should be trying to get younger.

pretty much this ...

he is a DE not an OLB , what is that about teaching an old dog new tricks ?

did not bode well for Kampman doubt it would with Freeney either

Which position? I doubt he can play OLB. As a DE he would be rather small for the Steelers' 3-4

How would they do this again? Are they planning on having him play for free?

Really, I don't know if he fits our scheme the best, but theoretically if we did sign him, perhaps part of his appeal would be that he would still command a lot of attention and thereby make everyone else around him better, kind of like Harrison did. Although I think in Freeney's case, we'd basically be counting on name recognition to do that. I am not that excited about the idea and agree it's probably just some kind of diversion.

This isn't going to happen. He doesn't fit our scheme and he's too old.

Offensive coordinators aren't going to get caught up in a name. They know a guy like Freeney is declining.

Why would the office not pay Harrison and then pay Freeney?

One of the reasons it's not that exciting. If anything, it would be the players on the field who pay too much attention to him, but if you can't bring it anymore, they'll also figure that out pretty quick.

Right, players and coaches don't get fooled. Only the media gets caught up in names.

Maybe LeBeau says it's time to switch to more of a 4-3?

Could be? maybe

If the Steelers braintrust no longer thinks our linebackers are our strength - I could see a 4-3 switch with a legitimate pass rush threat like Freeney, plug that true 4-3 MLB hole with the old Bear, what the hell....we need a pass rush, and LeBeau knows it. they could play a hybrid with the pass rush specialist in on 3rd and long.

I fucking hate getting beat on 3rd and 15 all the fucking time because our soft zone goes softer, know what I mean?

Why would the Steelers even be in the conversation about acquiring Freeney?

The Steelers front office sure doesn't seem to be in love with Worilds like all y'all are.

maybe it's just me

there will be no switch to the 4-3 as long as Lebeau is here and for that matter as long as Butler is in line to be his successor ... any talk of such is nothing but idle banter .... if it is not broken do not try and fix it ....

plenty of things needing fixed without adding to that list things that work just fine

Absolutely. The only time I'd be willing to bring in Freeney is if we're instilling a 4-3 sub package and he'll come in on the cheep to anchor it on his side. And there's a VERY big difference between a 4-3 subpackage, and a 4-3 base defense.

Mediocrity is 8-8, that's broken in my world, time for a shake up, Steelers tied for 27th in the league in INT's!

Hilarious. One stat line means our defense is broken. Oops, sorry, let's throw in sacks and call it two stat lines. Never mind that our passing defense was the best I've seen since Cowher took over. Yes, Cowher. Never mind that we virtually shut down other teams offense in the fourth quarter. Never mind the number of three and outs we had, which is exactly the same thing as an INT and tackled immediately after on a deep ball. Blow it all up!

You are real close. We need somebody who can make Polamalu splash plays and pick the ball off. You never hear about guys getting 10 INTs in a season anymore and in a passing league that is what is needed.

I can't comment on your knob slobbering of FG Bill............ but a pass rush that can produce turnovers, that is the key

fuck yeah! - blow that bitch up

Steelers tied for 11th in the AFC with Miami for total defensive turnovers

http://espn.go.com/nfl/statistics/team/_/stat/givetake/league/afc

- - - arm tackling 11 yds downfield makes for great stats - No 1 in the league, I bet.

atta boy, if we can coax 1 Farrior year out Urlacher for vet minimum, why not?

....pathetic

$1M for a Foote back-up at the very least

where do I sign?

and bring on-board Freeney for the same reason....put some piss and vinegar back in this defense....old vets can get up for a year, at least ....get some pass rush and Flacco's lob balls land in the dirt, I ain't ascared of that gutted team..

First, may I suggest you re-read my post, as it seems you completely misinterpreted what I said.

Let's try it again. "Since Cowher took over." That means, from Cowher's first year until now, last year was the best I've seen. It seems you may have been a little to eager to talk about knob-slobbering and not eager enough to actually read my post.

Now, your "turnovers" argument. Funny that you completely ignored the fact that I already said a three and out is pretty much just as good as a turnover. Or, would you rather go back to the days of sacks and turnovers - only to sit and watch our defense dominate for 53 minutes of a game, and then let the other team score 10 to 14 points in the last half of the fourth quarter and win the game?

Sorry, but I'd rather take a "W" than great "turnover" and "sack" stats. And don't give me that "Sacks equal wins" crap, because it just isn't true. Have you noticed who usually makes it to the playoffs? QB's that have a lot of sacks. Go check out 2010 for instance. It''ll be quite the surprise.

Steelers don't play 3 dimensional chess with FA signings, they target who they want.
