When he was an NFL offensive lineman, Alan Faneca weighed 320 pounds. Two years after retiring, Faneca is down to 220.
The 36-year-old Faneca told FOXSportsArizona.com that he cut way down on his caloric intake as soon as he left the NFL, and as a result he lost weight so rapidly that people were getting worried about him.

Well dang, maybe he can come back here and play linebacker or wide receiver.

This is pretty common amongst a lot of guys. Seen Chris Hoke lately? It seems like players - most drastically linemen - go one way or the other in a big way quickly after they retire. They either cut out calories and lose weight, or cut out workouts but maintain the huge appetite and gain it.

Eons ago I saw an actual layout of the food in a lineman's strict diet on a table. They're taking in a crazy amount of calories to maintain that weight with that kind of physical conditioning. It's like Stalone when he put on 50 lbs. for Copland. He was in such great shape he lost it all in a month or 2.

That really is impressive. Good for him. I bet his knees feel a heck of a lot better too, knees, back, hips, etc.

Maybe Woodley should spend some time at his dinner table. :chuckle:

Mark Stepnoski lost most of his playing weight. He's skinny enough that he doesn't look like a football player.

LOL.

The contrast between Faneca and Woodlsloth amazing.

Faneca obviously took being a professional football player very seriously and this has carried right over to his post football life.

I am waiting for Steeldawg to say that Woodley should be paid more. :sofunny:

Congrats Alan.

Good to know one of my all-time favorite Steelers is doing well in retirement.

I got a text from a friend saying how unhealthy it must have been for him to be that weight. Thing is, these guys are huge but also in great physical condition (for the most part).

The problem comes AFTER they leave the league, for both offensive and defensive linemen. You can't play guard at 220 in today's NFL. You'll get pushed around by defensive linemen all day long. However, you can't live at 320 after playing if you're not going to keep doing the workouts....and few players work out like that after retirement. It's not a requirement of your job anymore, so why work out 5-6 hours a day most a year? You also aren't doing the conditioning program that the team gives you. You aren't working out at the facility, you aren't under the supervision of strength and conditioning coaches, team doctors.

You either make the right choices and drop the excess and now unneeded weight, or you keep it on/gain more and are stuck with all different health problems from bad knees and back to congestive heart failure.
