Ziggy Hood can't be denied by a coaching staff that's even giving their rampaging defensive end some time at nose tackle in order to get him on the field.

LATROBE – There’s a new YouTube video of a woman at Yellowstone National Park moving into close range to snap a picture of a bison. A stick flies through the air and smacks the bison in the butt, sending the bison into a rampaging fury after the poor woman. That bison looked like Ziggy Hood on the first day of training camp.

As I said in another thread, I think all those critics that say we'll miss the playoffs again are overlooking who we've had waiting in the wings. Just another example of lazy journalism.

After reading the whole article the quote below stood out most to me. With this kind of work ethic and will to succeed I would believe that Ziggy probably could hold his own at NT if required.

Hood spent the offseason living in the Steelers’ weight room. Each day he warmed up with a cardio exercise for 30 minutes, then lifted for two hours, and then performed football-type drills. With the start of camp, he remains a daily visitor, but will lighten his weight loads to save energy for practice. He hasn’t gained any weight, but has lowered his body fat to 21 percent.

"bu..bu..but the bengals got TO and pacman. the ravens signed that kicking juggernaut, shayne graham".

i love how all the focus is on our division opponents offense. in the meantime we will be going freaking D-Day on their asses-

“Definitely,” Mitchell said. “I’ve got six guys who can play and we’re going to rotate guys. That’s what I told them yesterday. We’re going to rotate guys and we’re going to have our first wave and then we’re going to bring our second wave in and then we’re going to bring the first wave back and we’re just going to storm the beach with those six guys. We’re coming after those guys.
“They’re going to play. We’re not going to let any good football player sit the bench.”

and i agree completely with aussi... not only is he a beast, but a svelte bison ready to stomp a hoof print in the opponents heads.

Hood has developed a reputation throughout the organization as a maniac in the weight room, a workout warrior striving to reach an elite class with the likes of James Harrison (http://pit.scout.com/a.z?s=68&p=8&c=1&nid=4835639).

Ziggy Ziggy Ziggy!

It's just one drill, but good news.

The defense better step it up - the offense will be running on fumes for the first month

The part where they say he's got his body fat down to 21%.....could that be a typo? I'm sort of assuming they meant 2.1%.

haha! A 300lb. man is never going to get his body fat down to 2.1%. Maybe on the same day pigs fly. 21% is phenomenal for his size.

Not just why would you get that close, but why would you get that close, AND throw a stick at him!! How dumb could a person be?

Anyway, glad to hear that Ziggy is showing his first round draft pick talent. Hopefully he surprises a lot of people this year.

rofl...just wow.

Biggest man ive ever seen at 2% is a 230lb. wrestler on my squad.

21% is pretty good even if you expect a lot out of a pro athlete, although BMI wise he's not so great. They're all suckwad measures of health.

Guess I didn't realize he was that big. I've always thought of 21% as a lot. I have to remember the relative size of the people we talk about here.:der:

Agreed. If our defense is stout, anything is possible.

im sure this article will be started as its own thread, but probably fits better into this discussion, as its pretty much of the same...

Steelers DE Hood is making his (spin) move

http://www.pittsburghlive.com/x/pittsburghtrib/sports/steelers/s_693011.html

Aaron Smith, who knows a thing or two about playing defensive end, made a prediction Sunday about second-year man Ziggy Hood.
"I think he's going to be something special," Smith said.

...

Hood is versatile enough to play both end positions in the Steelers' 3-4 defense. Defensive line coach John Mitchell is also getting him some work at nose tackle to see if Hood can handle that position as well.
The 6-foot-3 Hood played tackle in a 4-3 defense at Missouri, and his weight is up to 310 pounds — he is listed at 300 pounds on the roster.
...

Hood said he is willing to bide him time.
"The more I see and learn from (Smith and Keisel), the better it makes me," Hood said. "I may not get in many reps during the game, but if I can learn visually and train myself mentally, when I go in there, it won't be a big difference."

+1 for calling one of our D-Linemen "svelte!"

Hood should get a lot more playing time than he got last season. Hood should probably be on the field in obvious passing situations.

I say he will get his playing time this year Hood should give us alot of help on our defensive line this year.
