Good. i still think he can help this club. Probably not anymore than a backup or spot starter. However, he may still be able to create match-up problems for some teams.

Best case scenario IMO. Get to keep the red zone threat/non-ST's contributer at the vet minimum. The only gripe would be him taking up a roster spot that could go to a bigger contributer yet-to-come (which we'll see about in a few months).

Basically this is just insurance until Heath Miller comes back. Yes I know they play different position's. But what it comes down to is with Heath out the Steelers don't have any height. So Plaxico gives them that height mismatch in the red zone while Miler's down. Good move by the Steelers imo.

I disagree that those are the reasons. We kept him for the same reasons we brought him in last year; depth and what he brings to the RZ (where we struggled).

The draft comp pick formula is not that complex. The first basis for the comp pick is yearly average of the contract. The 3rd round cut off was @$8M last year. If it is $10M next year, Wallace smokes that.

My guess is the Steelers get the 1st-3rd round comp pick next year.

I am glad we resigned Foote. Is he the best possible ILB? No. But he isn't the worst. He knows the scheme, he knows his assignment. What was behind him on the depth chart is uncertain. I doubt he got big dollars out of the deal, so if we have to cut him in a year or two it shouldn't kill us.

As for Wallace, good riddance. He showed last season that he has absolutely zero heart. Have fun in Miami, Mike! He wasn't coming back regardless of his play last season, he was way out priced.

And as for Lewis...I would love to resign him. However, if he's asking for huge money, he won't be a Steelers in 2013. Hopefully he doesn't have "Mike Wallace Overblown Ego Syndrome."

I think he came into the league at 20 but was a 3 or 4 year starter at OSU ... young but has a lot of early miles on the tires from OSU ( he had a gang of carries or sure seems like he did anyways ) not a ton of wear and tear in the NFL though unless you count the whirlpool time ... talented kid who was in a bad situation and had some bad luck with injuries , many have questioned his commitment too , maybe his situation caused it ..maybe not ...

The thing about Wells' injuries, they are all "freak" injuries. He's committed, but it's not like he was in a great situation. He's the type of back than needs around 20 or more carries a game, not 12. The offensive line for the Cardinals has always been subpar, especially in run blocking.

I think if he comes here and can stay healthy, he can be good. His career average yards per carry is 4.0 YPC. He's got a 1000 yard season under his belt, and he'd have an actual passing game to help open holes for him. That's something that the Cardinals haven't had since Warner retired.

Steelers, Packers interested in Ahmad Bradshaw

http://profootballtalk.nbcsports.com/2013/03/17/steelers-packers-interested-in-ahmad-bradshaw/

All’s been quiet on the Ahmad Bradshaw front since the Giants released the six-year veteran last month. But Bradshaw is starting to draw interest.

Both the Packers and the Steelers are interested in Bradshaw’s services, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports.

It would be unlike the Packers to spend a lot on a free agent running back (or a free agent at any position, for that matter), but Green Bay has been shopping for a running back in free agency. The Packers were interested in Steven Jackson’s services, and they’ve also visited with Peyton Hillis. The Steelers, who let Rashard Mendenhall leave in free agency, are also shopping for depth at running back.

Bradshaw, who will turn 27 on Tuesday, had foot surgery after the season but is believed to be good to go now. He played in 14 games for the Giants last year, gaining 1,015 yards on 221 carries and adding 23 catches for 245 yards.

I heard the same thing about many other RBs over the years. It won't matter until the O-line is a consistent unit. Now they will have a new O-line coach. No holes = No yards.

OLB, ILB, S are far more important than a RB. RBs can be chosen in the late rounds

I disagree Steeldude. OLB IS important due to the loss of #92, but we were still great on Defense last year (#1) with much the same squad we're looking at for 2013. Our running game though, was 26th in the league.

I doubt very much it will happen, because the Steelers last offer will no longer be on the table. Why? Dwin's covered it earlair, but in essense what it comes down to is that if James had taken the Steelers offered reduction when it was offered they wouldn't have had to carry any dead money related to James on the 2013 salary cap. Now in order to resign him they would still get that dead money cap hit, therefore they'd be forced to reduce the contract for this season to stay at the same place financially.

Maybe there's a way around it with a multi year contract? But I doubt it. Unless James can swallow his pride and is willing to play for the Steelers for a contract way less than what he turned down last month this wont happen imo.

They could make the same contract offer work, by simply reducing this year's salary by the amount of dead money they ate, and increasing it next year by whatever the prorated 2014 part of that was. It would come out exactly the same as far as the salary cap goes. I would think Harrison would want a significant part of next year's money guaranteed in order to do that, though.

From the sounds of it, Harrison's market is bone dry. All that "interest" in the beginning from his agent was obviously a smokescreen, and you could tell that at the time. It doesn't sound like he's in position to make any sort of contract demands at this point and that's not going to get any better as more and more pass rushers are signed (Freeney, Osi, drafted players).

Not a bad pick up by the Browns... Not great but not terrible either.

And as long as Ahmad Bradshaw can stay healthy I would not mind that signing at all if we got him.

I actually like this idea - not another fatback, a proven runner that can bust the big one.

If we're lucky, all his injuries and latest foot surgery will scare away teams enough for us to sign him to a cheap, cheap contract.

According to Schefter, Will Allen signing with Cowboys...

Adam Schefter (https://www.facebook.com/AdamSchefter)
Dallas' deal with S Will Allen is like the one with LB Justin Durant: When cap space is there, players will be signed.

Good. Maybe now the Steelers will be forced to do something about getting some players at the safety position. I for one am willing to see almost anyone not named Mundy and Allen make the roster. Don't get me wrong, Allen played really well last season, but when your starters are aging vets, having 30+ year old players as the back-ups is not helpful either. They must get younger at the position.

I agree. I'm going to miss Allen, but I still agree.

if thats supposed to be sarcasm. THEY DONT. you think $2.7 mill under the cap is sufficient to get jake long or elvis dumervil. LOL

guess it would have been enough ... Elvis is just a 2.5 mill cap hit in 2013 for the Ratbirds

I don't really care how old the backup is, as long as he can still play adequately. Backup players shouldn't be confused with guys who we're hoping to eventually take over as starters. So until we get serious about finding an actual successor to Troy, I'd rather have a guy who can hold down the fort than some young guy just because he's young.

It is, however, time to start looking for a real successor; probably was last year too.

Victor Butler chooses the Saints

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

so much for that....Colbert is no Shero

The Victor Across America Tour has ended, as Cowboys outside linebacker Victor Butler has chosen a team.

According to Adam Schefter of ESPN, Butler ended his free agent tour by picking the Saints.

Butler had also visited the Steelers, Browns and Eagles, but chose to reunite with Saints defensive coordinator Rob Ryan.

This could actually be good news for us. I saw the Saints as one of the road blocks should Jones, or Mingo start to slid in the draft. I would guess, only a guess, that this would make their picking either one less likely. I really didn't think there was much of a chance we could sign Butler anyway.

If Ray Shero has $10 and Omar Khan has $10, who has more money?

Was kinda bummed about Butler but then I saw this:

Saints signed OLB Victor Butler to a two-year contract.
Butler, 25, has 11 career sacks and four forced fumbles across four seasons, though he's only played 803 career snaps, per Pro Football Focus. The typical starting 3-4 rush linebacker plays 900-1,000 snaps. While Butler is considered a weak run defender, he has edge speed the Saints desperately need. He also played for new New Orleans defensive coordinator Rob Ryan in Dallas last year. Butler will compete for a starting job with Junior Galette, Will Smith, Martez Wilson, and whomever the Saints add in April's draft. We like Butler's chances of at least earning a significant role in sub-packages -- all-out pass-rush downs. Mar 28 - 1:11 PM

Made me kinda think that basically Butler may be Worilds and Carter. Both those guys have a fast first step and not much else. For me, at least, the biggest concern I have about the switch from Harrison to Worilds/whomever is anchoring against the run. If Butler can't do that, I would rather have Ahmad Bradshaw and a decent safety or corner signed in free agency.

CB Nnamdi Asomugha to the 49ers

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

49ers agreed to terms with CB Nnamdi Asomugha, formerly of the Eagles, on a one-year contract.

Asomugha chose the 49ers over the Saints and his former DC Rob Ryan. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the deal is worth "up to" $3 million, and includes a $1.35 million base salary.

And this is why the Raiders will never be good again. I think they have like one draft pick this year now. Matt Flynn? Really?

Seems to be more valuable as a returner than a RB. Think that's why the Steelers are kicking the tires?
