A Florida high school student wrestled a loaded gun away from another teen on the bus ride home this week and was slapped with a suspension in return.

The 16-year-old Cypress Lake High student in Fort Myers, Fla. told WFTX-TV there was “no doubt” he saved a life after grappling for the loaded .22 caliber revolver being aimed point-blank at another student on Tuesday.

“I think he was really going to shoot him right then and there,” said the suspended student, not identified by WFTX because of safety concerns. “Not taking no pity.”

The student said the suspect, a football player, threatened to shoot a teammate because he had been arguing with his friend.

Authorities confirmed to WFTX the weapon was indeed loaded, and the arrest report stated the suspect, identified by WVZN-TV as Quadryle Davis, was “pointing the gun directly” at the other student and “threatening to shoot him.”

That’s when, the teen told the station, he and two others tackled the suspect and wrestled the gun away. The next day, all three were suspended.

“How they going to suspend me for doing the right thing?” he asked.

The school’s referral slip said he was given an “emergency suspension” for being involved in an “incident” with a weapon. Lee County School District spokesman Alberto Rodriguez said in a statement that “If there is a potentially dangerous situation, Florida law allows the principal to suspend a student immediately pending a hearing.”

“Those kids had to fight for their lives,” the mother of the suspended teen said. “All the kids that was involved in this they should have a pat on their backs because they did the right thing to save someone from burying their child.”

The suspended teen is allowed to go back to school Monday.

Meanwhile, the student accused of pointing the weapon has been charged only with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon “without intent” to kill.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation is ongoing and that the charges are “based on our findings at this time.”

A shame. Here's what I think happened.

The principal sighed. Why won't he just shut up. There was another fight on a bus. Of COURSE there was. Just get out of my office and do whatever you need to so I can go home and take-- WHAT! "I'm sorry, did you just say gun?"

The students' counselor nodded. "Yep."

Principal: Oh no! Not a gun! Gun, Gun, Gun, Gun! Oh My God! GUNS! "Suspend them all! There was a gun involved!"

"But, sir, three of them actually tackled the guy and--"

The Principal's eyes doubled in size. "They went AFTER the guy with a gun?" They must be gun freaks! The second someone draws a gun they gravitate to it! I gotta put a stop to these evil things. "You heard me! Suspend them all. There has to be some kind of way we can justify it."

The counselor walks out of the principal's office and he leans back in his chair, then reaches for the phone to call his wife. "Guess what? I'm a hero! I saved the lives of a bunch of kids by suspending three gun freaks! Get dressed lil' mama, we're going to Sizzler."

More or less. A little literary license may have been taken in this reconstruction.

Wow. Right down the road from me in my city and the story didnt stay in the news very long. How was that not intent to kill? He pointed a gun and told him he was going to shoot him.

We wouldnt need so much gun control if we had criminal control. Every murder with a gun around here is by someone with a loong rap sheet that shouldnt even be out on the streets. Violent criminals need to stay locked up.

Im sure the 3 weeks supervised suspension will sreaighten that kid up. :eyeroll:

These stories just keep getting more and more outrageous. Parents need to start banding together and fighting against these kind of incidents when they happen. Zero tolerance shouldn't override common sense.

Regardless, the real problem is this would be killer is going to get a slap on the wrist because he is a minor and after a bunch of 2nd chances will eventually kill someone in his lifetime.

And who will be at fault when it happens? The gun, of course.

So there was a fight that involved a handgun and everyone involved was sent home untill the details were sorted out, the gunman was arrested and the kids are going back to school monday. That just doesnt seem that outrageous to me.

So by that logic shouldn't every single kid on that bus be suspended also? Since every one of them were in danger and involved in one way or another.

why is it no matter how outlandish and dead wrong the powers that be are in any given situation or circumstance you are always standing there taking up for them instead of using common sense as your guide ?

are you one of them that we all hate ?

never mind do not answer that , it could be dangerous since most of us have guns ( the bold is sarcasm )

There seem to be a handful of them on here where 96.5% of all their post are idiotic or borderline troll. (Notice am not criticizing the poster, just the posts although there does seem to be some sort of pattern here...)

I've got them on block to try and shield myself from stupidity but it doesn't do much good since everyone quotes them anyways...

I agree with Steeldawg. I can see why they took the heroes out of school for a few days. It makes sense given that they were in a life-threatening situation. Give the kids involved a day or two to take in what they were involved in and let the adrenaline rush pass. No one is shaking a finger at these kids for doing the right thing. I'm sure the accolades will come. This is just an over-reaction to that negative connotation that the word "suspended" carries with it.
