Jeff Reed arrived at camp already an unhappy camper when it came to his contract.

Jeff Reed will have to wait at least another year before possibly signing a long-term contract that would keep him with the Steelers until his career is over. And he is not happy about it.
Reed, who will earn $2,814,000 in 2010 after signing a one-year franchise tender, said he is "extremely" disappointed that the Steelers did not sign him to a longer contract before the start of training camp...........

Old, moldy rotten cheese would suffice.

If he was promised somethng and it wasn't done, I have a hard time blaming him for being upset about it. I don't think he needs to go public about it though. That will get him nowhere.

You're dang right he doesn't need to go public with it. He needs to man up and wait his turn, or go somewhere else and bang more paper towel dispensers for all I care.

Exactly. Maybe they intedned to do one thing but like the article says, Colon's injury changed the financial perspective. He did say he wants to stay and retire a Steelers so obviously it's just frustration. I think the whole uncertainty of the CBA situation has frustrated alot of them. It is their jobs and one year is a big chunk of short careers.

Just like I said when Woodley came out and whined about his contract...Jeff, shut the hell up and play football. You're making $2.8 million effing dollars to KICK A FOOTBALL. Take it, be happy with it, and get your ass out on the field and practice.

I've had it with players going to the media to whine about their contracts. If the Steelers are so horrible to play for, then go play for another team.

This guy annoys me. At 2.8 I see little reason to pout. Maybe if he would of conducted himself in the proper manner over the last few years his deal would of been signed sealed and delivered by now.

EXACTLY! This guy makes a spectacle out of himself several times in the last couple of years and expects a huge, long-term deal? What is it this year with guys with the last name Reed whining about contracts when they have no one else to blame but themselves for their situations? Shut up and kick some damn balls and try to not make an ass out of yourself for a year and maybe you'll get what you're looking for.

Yes. That's why the writer chose that particular picture instead of one the many they had where he was the usual jovial Skippy we all know.

This is what I got out of that article that is actually fact. Reed was told when they put the tag on him, that something would be worked out for him. Willie Colon got hurt and they had to spend extra money for an experienced replacement and Reed's deal had to go on the back burner. Skippy feels betrayed but he knows he's still getting paid to do a job and he will do that and hope for the best.

The rest is all about creating a controversy where there may not actually be one. The one thing I've learned about journalists is that it is all about selling newspapers and hits on websites. Didn't any one else learn this from the Ben fiasco??? I quit letting journalists form my view on anything along time ago.

And yes, it's best to keep it to yourself. I'm betting the writer asked Reed about his contract status purposely to try and get something he could spin into a bigger story that what it actually is.

At least we have a dependable kicker - unlike some teams

Ravens special teams coach Jerry Rosburg said he doesn't expect the Ravens to name a kicker until the end of the preseason.

Shayne Graham is competing with Billy Cundiff, a battle we fully expect Graham to win. Although the former Bengals' kicker has struggled in some big spots recently, he remains one of the more accurate kickers around. It's unlikely he'll give Cundiff an opening by choking in a preseason game.

This must be the Year of the Reeds, as far as contract whining is concerned.

killer, that's not quite true. Cundiff kicked quite well after being brought on mid-season last year, and Graham is proven. It's a good thing to have kickers compete, unless you have one on the roster that's been there awhile and is a franchise foot, ala' Matt Stover.

Jeff Reed, you missed a few big kicks last year that if you made them....then we would have been in the playoffs and possibly AFC North Champs.

You also have done some stupid things to get yourself bad press. You're a kicker. You have a limited chance of getting hurt as long as you don't pull a Gramatica.

Shut up, hit some game winning field goals, and when this whole CBA thing is worked out you'll get a long term deal. Woodley has a much better chance of getting seriously injured and you don't see him pouting about not having a long term deal.

It's strange how the overwhelming sentiment is that Reed should shut the hell up and play ball, but it's okay for Woodley to run his mouth to the media.
:noidea:

Personally, I think they should both keep their mouth shut.

I really don't see that as whining. He was asked a question and he answered it.

Woodley has never been in trouble on or off the field and he has gotten better every season. He's one of the best OLB's in the game. And I don't think he's made a fuss about his contract situation, he's been very mature about it.

Woodley gave almost the same answers that Reed did to that question, so yes, he WAS whining, and yes, he SHOULD shut the hell up and play football. So what if he's never gotten in trouble on or off the field? That gives him a free pass to whine to the media about his contract? I don't think so!

"I've talked to guys in the organization personally, one on one, about how I feel; that's the best way to do it," Reed said. "To get my business out in the media, out in public, is not the best way to portray yourself.

OK - then practice what you preach, Skippy, and STFU. Get your ass out there, work hard, play hard and put up a kick-ass season so the FO will give you a good deal and you can retire as a Steeler. Melodrama isn't going to get you anywhere.

For those of you who discount the importance of a PK and salary expectations, imho - a PK is just as important as any other member of the team and sometimes, even more important in the 4Q and in OT. Skippy is pretty much a clutch K and I have no problem with what he has brought to the table over the years he's been a Steeler.

Poor, Poor Jeff Reed

Written by Travis Pulver, Monday August 02 2010

Actually, Jeff Reed is anything but poor after being given the franchise tag by the Pittsburgh Steelers and signing a one year deal worth close to $3 million. However, if you ask him, he’ll be quick to say it is not enough.

Since coming into the NFL back in 2002, Reed has been one of the best kickers in the league. He is currently the ninth most accurate kicker in the history of the game (83.3 percent); over the last three seasons no one has been more accurate than him.

Reed expected to get signed to a decent, long term deal especially after Oakland Raider kicker Sebastian Janikowski became the richest kicker with his four year, $16 million deal (with $9 million guaranteed).

"Janikowski's a great kicker but ... he definitely doesn't have any rings and percentage-wise, I'm better…That's the kind of things you take into account. I wasn't asking for that kind of money, but it doesn't matter. Bottom line is this isn't Oakland, and they're going to pay who they want to pay here." (ESPN)

LATROBE, Pa. -- Steelers (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/clubhouse?team=pit) kicker Jeff Reed (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=4399) isn't happy after learning he won't be signed to the multiyear contract he expected after being designated as the team's franchise player.
The Steelers told Reed earlier in the year they wanted to work out an extended contract. Any chance that deal would get done apparently ended when right tackle Willie Colon (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=9717) was injured in June and Flozell Adams (http://sports.espn.go.com/nfl/players/profile?playerId=1469) signed a two-year contract to replace him.

Janikowski has actually had a lot of legal troubles, just none recently. He does have a stronger leg than Reed though, and if Reed is expecting that kind of money, well then, so long I say.

Basically there will be a work stoppage after this season and the Steelers will probably be looking for a new kicker in 2 years anyways. The other thing is that Adams will still have a year under contract and the hope that a successor at RT will emerge like Chris Scott.

I think Colon unfortunately between the injury and contract situation will not be in B&G in the future.
