The Giants' minor "retooling" project took a major turn on Wednesday when at least two key members of their most recent Super Bowl championship team were released.
Running back Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive tackle Chris Canty were both cut by the Giants on Wednesday afternoon. They are the second and third veterans to get the axe after linebacker Michael Boley was cut on Tuesday.
The moves were necessary for the Giants, who were over the projected salary cap for the 2013 NFL season. Cutting Canty saved them $6.5 million in cap space. Cutting Bradshaw saved them $2.75 million. And with the $4.5 million they saved by cutting Boley, they got themselves under the projected cap with a little room to spare by clearing $13.75 million off their books.
Bradshaw, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Giants who has been their starting running back for the last three years, seemed to see his release coming. He expressed some concern about his future both right after the season and again last Saturday during an autograph signing in New Orleans. He recently had surgery to put a new screw in his right foot — one of multiple surgeries he's had on his feet and ankles over the years.
The former seventh-round draft pick (2007) had topped 1,000 yards in two of the last three seasons (including 1,015 last year) and he's only 26 years old, but all his injuries — including hand and neck injuries last season — have taken a toll on his body.

Absolutely not. BIG injury risk, and we've already dealt with enough of those, thanks.

He's only 26 and he played 14 games last year. Either's not bad for a back. Of course he'd have to pass a physical first. But if he did, and you can get 220 carries out of him next year, our running back situation is solved.

Which leaves us draft choices for other positions.

Granted it's very doubtfull that the Steelers will act as I wish them to, so you probably don't have anything to worry about XT.

We have to fix our cap problems before we can consider signing a guy like Bradshaw. I'm not feeling it.

So where exactly are we supposed to get the $4M+ to do that? I'm afraid that if we pick up any new players this offseason, they're going to be rookies or minimum-contract free agents.

It's all in how you structure his contract.

This is how I look at it. 2013 is it for Troy, Deebo, Ike Taylor, and maybe even Ryan Clark as Steelers. So pull out all of the stops and try to win it next season. We need a top tier running back, and if Bradshaw can pass a physical he is certainly that!

Try to win it next season then you can blow it all up for a year or two if you have to.

I don't know man, in my opinion, you have to stay healthy to be considered a top tier RB and I still don't think mortgaging our future for an injury prone RB is wise.

He played 14 games and carried the ball 220 times last season and had 2- 100 yard games in December. That's not exactly Duce Staley territory.

He's been injured quite a bit in recent years. We'll just have to agree to disagree on this one bro. I would however make a forum contribution bet of 20 bucks if you would like to, cause I really don't think the Steelers will sign him.

Oh I know they wont. I just wish they would. My preference, not to be confused with my prediction.

ahh, I gotcha now. I wouldn't be surprised if they try and keep Mendy, as much as I really don't want them too, I certainly can see them doing it. Its not like he's improved his stock much over the last couple years.

Wouldn't mind having Bradshaw, but they still need a #1 guy. Bradshaw isn't a primary back and he's not worth $4M.

if ...and that is a big if ... we had the coin I would take Canty over Bradshaw ..I foresee neither in our future

Bradshaw has had too many injuries and he doesn't fit the type of offense that we're going to be running.
