The Giants' minor "retooling" project took a major turn on Wednesday when at least two key members of their most recent Super Bowl championship team were released.
Running back Ahmad Bradshaw and defensive tackle Chris Canty were both cut by the Giants on Wednesday afternoon. They are the second and third veterans to get the axe after linebacker Michael Boley was cut on Tuesday.
The moves were necessary for the Giants, who were over the projected salary cap for the 2013 NFL season. Cutting Canty saved them $6.5 million in cap space. Cutting Bradshaw saved them $2.75 million. And with the $4.5 million they saved by cutting Boley, they got themselves under the projected cap with a little room to spare by clearing $13.75 million off their books.
Bradshaw, a two-time Super Bowl winner with the Giants who has been their starting running back for the last three years, seemed to see his release coming. He expressed some concern about his future both right after the season and again last Saturday during an autograph signing in New Orleans. He recently had surgery to put a new screw in his right foot — one of multiple surgeries he's had on his feet and ankles over the years.
The former seventh-round draft pick (2007) had topped 1,000 yards in two of the last three seasons (including 1,015 last year) and he's only 26 years old, but all his injuries — including hand and neck injuries last season — have taken a toll on his body.
