The NFL got exactly what it wanted from referee Jerome Boger and the crew that worked the Super Bowl

Roger Goodell wanted an officiating crew that would get out of the way and let the players be the stars.
For the past 15 years and spurred by the popularity of HD TV, NFL refs have been horning in on the players’ spotlight. The refs like being stars. They like being recognized. Ed Hochuli’s guns have become as well-known as Deion’s high-step.

Goodell wants to end this. He doesn’t want officiating stars. That’s why the NFL worked its system to assign a mediocre, nondescript ref the Super Bowl. According to Boger’s jealous peers, his season-long grades did not justify his Super Bowl selection. Speculation quickly asserted the NFL manipulated its grading system so that an African-American ref could lead the Super Bowl.

If that were the case, Mike Carey would’ve been the easy choice. He’s worked the Super Bowl before and he’s highly regarded.

Nope. Goodell was after something different. Goodell wanted a ref who would stay out of the way, a crew that wouldn’t take over the game. And that’s what the league got.

Boger and his crew swallowed their flags from start to finish. They entered the stadium determined not to be the story when the game was over. Guess what? They’re the story. Jim Harbaugh was irate there was no defensive holding or pass interference called on San Fran’s last offensive play..............

and a tidbit at the very end of the article..........

I see the Steelers and the 49ers meeting in next year’s Super Bowl
I’ll take Big Ben over Kaepernick in that one.

We all hate it when the refs take over a game. But it’s just as bad when they let the players police themselves. The Super Bowl deserved better officiating. I blame Goodell.

Whitlock needs to give it a rest. I clearly remember all the bitching he did regarding the officiating in SB XLIII and how the refs "took over the game," and every damn call in that one was legit. Can't have it both ways. :coffee:

What bothers me the most about the officiating is being flag happy all season, changing game outcomes and thus playoff standings....and then letting it all go for the Superbowl.

The inconsistancy made me turn away from most of the games all season.

Boger had mark downs changed back to a passing grade after the fact last season. That just doesn't happen.

By the way if you're going to swallow your whistle on the play Crabtree was held on at the end, then why are you throwing your flag for intererence on the 3rd down incompletion on the Ravens last field goal drive?

My problem with the refs is the galling lack of consistency.

PFT pointed out some consistency.....the ref pushed by Williams was also pushed by Cam Newton...he ejected neither player. The guy needs to grow a set or be let go.

its a no win if they threw the flag then there is an article about how you cant throw the flag in that spot and you have to let the players play.

Yep. Everyone accused the refs of deciding Super Bowl XL by throwing "ticky tacky" flags. But if they don't flag those plays, they decided the game by letting a team get away with holding and OPI.

If they hadn't thrown the flag for PI against the 49'ers on the Ravens most recent series before that it would have been easier to understand the no call there at the end of the game. But when you just sustained a series for the Ravens on a 3rd and 9 play on a very similiar sort of play then it doesn't wash. Without the PI the Ravens punt and it's a different situation there at the end entirely.
