Two things.
1. If you changed the names to Tomlin and Ben Roethlisberger here, I'd be outraged at my coach for his shortsighted bungling of this injury from the outset.
2. Good thing they drafted Cousins. It might be the only thing that saves Shanahan from being fired for cause by Snyder.
It should be brought up in the player's union. Shanahan could have ruined RG's career for being short sighted.

RG3 reportedly will be with Redskins owner at exam
http://www.nfl.com/news/story/0ap1000000123548/article/rg3-reportedly-will-be-with-redskins-owner-at-exam
The Washington Redskins aren't saying anything about the status of Robert Griffin III's knee yet. But the early signs aren't exactly promising.
Redskins owner Dan Snyder reportedly will accompany RG3 to Pensacola, Fla., on Tuesday to visit Dr. James Andrews. That's not something you would normally see with a routine injury.
The Redskins performed an MRI on Griffin's knee on Sunday night following the team's season-ending loss to the Seattle Seahawks. It's also not a good sign they aren't disclosing the results. Shanahan said the results of the exam are "open to interpretation" but clearly there's concern it could be serious. Shanhan is under withering and somewhat unfair criticism related to how he handled Griffin during the game.
"If I didn't think it was right, he wouldn't have been in there," Shanahan said.
Griffin tore his ACL during his sophomore season at Baylor. We couldn't help but notice that Shanahan's response when asked if Griffin would miss some of the offseason because of the injury.
"I thought Adrian Peterson did pretty good last year for not being part of the offseason program," Shanahan said.
Yeah, that's not an especially good sign.

This report is likely inaccurate. It was reported earlier in the day and has pretty much been dismissed.
The more recent reports show partial ACL tear and LCL tear. And there's no timetable.
Again, these are all reports. Griffin will meet with Dr. Andrews tomorrow and then we'll get an answer.

Robert Griffin III has partial tears of ACL and LCL, MRI suggests
The MRI exam of Redskins quarterback Robert Griffin III’s right knee shows that Griffin has suffered possible partial tears of his anterior cruciate and lateral collateral ligaments, according to several people with knowledge of the test results.
Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan said Griffin is scheduled to be examined Tuesday in Pensacola, Fla., by orthopedic surgeon James Andrews to determine whether the test results show new or previous injuries.
Shanahan said it was unclear whether Griffin will play in the Pro Bowl

RG3 scheduled to have surgery to repair LCL damage

Robert Griffin III could be out for 8-12 months after LCL surgery
Dreese, who has no specific knowledge of Griffin’s injury, said an LCL tear could keep Griffin out for eight to 12 months.
The length of the rehabilitation depends on whether the ligament can be repaired surgically, or requires a more extensive reconstruction using a graft from another part of the body or a cadaver. An ACL typically requires a six- to eight-month rehabilitation.
“When the collateral ligaments are involved,” Dreese said, “the concern in the long term is that controlling the rotational component of the knee can be more difficult.”
Dreese also said LCL tears are usually accompanied by injuries to one of the cruciate ligaments — the ACL or PCL (posterior cruciate ligament). However, he said if there is an ACL tear, in addition to the LCL tear, it would not necessarily lengthen Griffin’s rehab.

I think Shanahan could be fired for cause ( in other words not have to pay off his contract) for how he fucked up his franchise player.
Once he aggravated his inury that should have been it. He should have been pulled then and there. This wasn't Favre and the Vikings from 2009. An aged vet on a team with a closing window.
No this was a young team that got to the playoffs a year early. The future was all ahead of this team. Until now.

The correct call was obvious to almost everyone who watched Robert Griffin III drag his right leg around FedEx Field on Sunday night. But Washington Redskins Coach Mike Shanahan chose not to see it.
Shanahan should have pulled Griffin early from Washington’s 24-14 playoff loss to Seattle. No matter how much Griffin protested — and the competitive star surely would have — Shanahan could have ordered Griffin to take a seat long before his injured right knee buckled late in the game. Both for Griffin’s physical well-being and the long-term future of the franchise, Shanahan needed to do what he’s paid for: make a smart decision under pressure.
Immediately after Griffin’s uh-oh moment in the opening quarter, backup Kirk Cousins became the Redskins’ best option at quarterback. Without being hit, Griffin, who planted on his right knee and threw across his body, came up hobbling following an incompletion. It didn’t matter that Griffin threw a touchdown pass two plays later. Griffin wasn’t right. It showed for the remainder of the game.
Clearly unable to put weight on his right knee, Griffin sailed throws high and threw grounders. On designed runs, he looked more like a plodding offensive lineman than an Olympic-class hurdler who has covered 40 yards in 4.41 seconds.
The guy who has control over all Redskins football decisions should have used some of his power to protect Griffin from himself.
Griffin is the type to stay on the field no matter what. He always wants to be in the game. That’s admirable. And Griffin’s selflessness in pursuit of group success is the main reason his teammates are fiercely loyal to him.
Even on Monday, as players expressed concern about Griffin’s status entering the offseason, none argued he should have been lifted.
“Robert’s our quarterback,” veteran wide receiver Santana Moss said, without any hint of second-guessing in his voice. “If he says he can play, he can play. That’s what players do.”
And that’s why there’s management. On the Redskins’ football organizational chart, no one is higher than Shanahan. That’s the way he wanted it. He wouldn’t have come to Washington without the authority to run the operation his way.
To whom much is given, though, much is expected. When you control every aspect of the program from the strategy on offense and defense to the where furniture is placed — it was Shanahan’s decision to have couches put near the locker room at Redskins Park — you can’t fumble when the health of the most important player in the organization is at stake.

Shanahan made a collossal mistake. I'm embarrassed for the guy.
However I honestly feel the this mental mistake in the heat of battle pales in comparison to Tomlin's decision to play Ben week after week the last TWO seasons when he was not near healthy enough to play effectively.
Flat out neanderthal.

Says here it's a completely torn LCL and completely torn ACL, but he could be ready by the start of next season (which I have my doubts about, but hey, I'm not a doctor):
http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/2012/story/_/id/8827480/sources-robert-griffin-iii-washington-redskins-acl-lcl-surgery-ready-opener
Also worrisome: You can't sew ACLs back together; you have to replace them with something else, and taking a piece out of the center of your patellar tendon is what works best. Since he had a torn ACL previously, they already used part of that knee's patellar tendon to repair it, and that's what tore now. They can't use that knee's patellar tendon again, so now they'll use the one from his other knee, and if he hurts it again, that's it as far as that option is concerned. They can try to reconstruct it with part of the hamstring, or tendons from cadavers - but as far as athletic reconstruction goes, a patellar tendon graft is what's known to work and everything else is much lower-percentage. It should also be noted that he'll now be recovering from surgery on both knees at once, and from here on out playing with somewhat weakened knee structure in both knees.
I feel bad for the guy. Knowing that you're basically faced with playing your entire career hoping you don't get another one of these has got to suck. The worst part is, I bet he does. He's had what, two blown out knees in 4 years. There really is something to be said about the fact that when you play that way, the risk keeps going up and up the higher the level you get to.

AP Source: RG3 surgery repairs damage to ACL, LCL
WASHINGTON (AP) — Robert Griffin III had surgery to repair two ligaments in his troublesome right knee Wednesday morning, said a person familiar with the situation.
The Washington Redskins quarterback had his knee repaired by orthopedist James Andrews in Florida. The doctor had already diagnosed a torn lateral collateral ligament in his right knee. The person said Andrews also found and repaired damage found in Griffin's ACL.
The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the Redskins had not made an announcement about the latest details surrounding the rookie quarterback's injury.
Now comes RG3's next challenge: a race against time to get healthy before the beginning of next season.
Griffin's recovery time will take several months at least but could extend into next season, depending on the extent of the damage. The process could also be speeded up because Griffin is known as a focused, determined competitor who would be expected to take his rehab as seriously as possible.
"Thank you for your prayers and support. I love God, my family, my team, the fans, & I love this game. See you guys next season," Griffin tweeted before the surgery began.
Athletes generally need nine to 12 months to make a full recovery from a torn ACL, although Minnesota Vikings running back Adrian Peterson made a remarkable return this season about eight months after tearing an ACL — and nearly broke the NFL's single-season rushing record.

We all know most players are going to try to play no matter what and, sometimes you have to save players from themselves. Look at Ben last year against the 49ers and, several other games as well. Shanahan should have made RG3 sit at half time and, it's easy to say that. I hope RG3 can have a full recovery. With his style of play you got wonder how long of a career will he have?
