Heath Miller holds all kinds of records for tight ends who wore the Steelers uniform and he added two more today. He is the first tight end to win their Most Valuable Player Award and he is the first recipient to miss the ceremony.
Miller was scheduled to have surgery on his injured right knee today and thus could not attend the press conference that revealed he won the MVP as voted by his teammates.
He leads the Steelers with 71 receptions, seven more than Mike Wallace and Antonio Brown. That number is second among AFC tight ends and five fewer than his own record for team tight ends, set in 2009.
Steelers Report: Injuries and the Browns

His 816 yards are only 20 off Wallace's team lead. And he leads everyone but kicker Shaun Suisham with 50 points on eight touchdown receptions and a two-point conversion.

Two other awards also were presented today, both on votes of the local chapter of the Pro Football Writers Association.
Mike Adams, who started six games at right tackle before an ankle injury knocked him out of the lineup, is the Steelers' rookie of the year.
Casey Hampton, who started all 15 games after January ACL surgery, won the Chief Award named in honor of Art Rooney Sr. for a player's cooperation in assisting writers covering the team.

No surprise at all. Too bad he can't finish the season.

Congrats Heath. Well deserved. Get well soon!

“For my ballot, I didn’t just put Heath, I put Heeeeeath.” We love it when we hear that at games. We love Heath. He deserves to be MVP.” ~ Brett Keisel

Best news I've heard about the team all year.

Only player who showed up to play in every game (except the last). I also remember him not doing anything stupid either.

It's not a nickname. His full name is Earl Heath Miller.

Must be the 10th time this has had to be explained...

Well, there's always someone who didn't know - honestly, it's not really that common knowledge. But now that you explained it to Psycho Ward, I won't have to ask next time it's brought up, so thanks for that. How do you get "Dick" from "Richard", anyway? :-)

But good for Heeeeeeeeeath! Totally deserving. I always yell "Heeeeeeeeeeath" from my computer chair, just to be part of the crowd. Maybe next year I'll throw in an Eaaaaaaaaaaarl" instead, just for fun.

Just watch, he'll have 7 DUIs within a month. Just because that's the way this season goes. If you say something positive, the 2012 season will prove you wrong.

True, but I think the fact that he's already a big question mark for opening day next season due to a major injury means the bad karma had already preemptively struck for the positive development of being named team MVP.

I don't know what this team did this season to piss off the football gods the way it did, but I hope they can rectify it somehow.

The sensible thing to do is just blame it all on Wallace and call it a day.
