how can this be right ??

http://espn.go.com/nfl/playoffs/machine/_/factor/wins/results/321223023~1~321223033~2~321230004~1~321230011~2~32 1223012~2~321230028~1

hard to conceive the Ravens losing out would still have a better division record , a better conference record but we would be the division champs ????

( not that I expect to win out to have any chance at this coming to fruition )

After all the adversity (injuries) this team has had to endure this season, how ironic (and fitting) would it be to have the Gayvens lose out and the Steelers win out and (perhaps) claim the AFC North title!
I mean, that would be the ultimate Christmas gift for me.

I don't get it either - if we win out from here and the Ravens lose out, we'd both be 3-1 against Cincy and Cleveland and 4-4 against other common opponents (AFC West and NFC East). And I know they have a better AFC record. :noidea:

EDIT: Just figured it out. Cincy would also wind up at 9-7, so the following tiebreaker (http://www.nfl.com/standings/tiebreakingprocedures) would apply (division tiebreakers between 3 or more teams):

1. Head-to-head (best won-lost-tied percentage in games among the clubs).

In this scenario, the Steelers wind up 3-1 (having beat the Bengals twice and the Ravens once), the Ravens would be 2-2 (having lost to the Bengals and Steelers once apiece), and the Bengals would be 1-3 (having lost to the Steelers twice and the Ravens once)

I think you're right and they're not. We have to have a game up on them in order to take the division away.

someone posted on another forum that the reason is we will have a better record vs the Bengals and Ravens combined , than the Ravens would have vs the Steelers / Bengals combined and we beat the Bengals head to head thus we get the division ....

/I dunno ...I always thought conference record came into play before something like that would /shrug

Actually, they are right - the 3-way tiebreaker rules would apply (as the Bengals would also be 9-7) - see the edit to my post above.

Still a longshot, IMO. I haven't checked the times for the games, but if things shake out a certain way, the Bengals may have nothing to play for in the last week and just lay down and the Ravens win the game and the division on the last day of the regular season.

Yep. If Steelers win out and Ravens lose out and the Bengals end up 9 and 7, the Steelers take the AFC North as a result of the 3 way tiebreaker that someone described above.

Regardless, win the next 2 and you're in. The division would be great because if this team has to go to Denver in the first round they are out of the playoffs anyways.

with the Denver win yesterday , they would be getting a bye if the season ended today so we would not have to make that trip in the first round anyways

If we somehow win the division, we get a home game in Heinz in the WC round against either the Colts or Ravens.

Huh - I guess that's a scenario I never ran through the playoffmachine. Who would've thunk it? :chuckle:

yeah. I forgot about that. So great, as it stands today, they would go on the road to NE if the they got the #6 seed. Another historically favorable location.

this just makes losing all of those garbage games feel that much worse. so many opportunities to take advantage and we let every single one so far slip out of our hands.

Well, the game against cincy is LITERALLY the last straw so looks like we'll find out who the real slim shady is then.

I thought the Ravens won the division yesterday by virtue of the Steelers losing. They needed to win or have the Steelers lose.

They got the playoff berth not the division. What a crazy last 2 weeks this will be.
