According to Twitter, Rainey was taken to the hospital with a possible punctured lung.

The players from both teams prayed on field, and I join my prayers to theirs. Get well Chris.

Dejan Kovacevic‏@Dejan_KovacevicChris Rainey tells me his ribs are not broken. Expects to be "really uncomfortable" for couple days but not miss game time. #Steelers (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/search?q=%23Steelers&src=hash)

Awesome news! Having Rainey back for next week is great, the presence he has on the return game is a momentum changer!

Hope he's doing well tonight. Gotta admit, it's nice to see all the players praying together whenever something like that happens. Have to give a nod to the Giants players that came over to get the Steelers players attention and pray with them. That's a class act.

100% agree. There are things more important than football. Not many, mind you. :chuckle:

Steelers Depot‏@SteelersdepotRumors circulating that Chris Rainey had a punctured lung appear to false as @albyox (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/albyox) reports he walked to bus & is on the plane.

Great news. A punctured lung? That's not one you hear everyday.

He did get speared right to his chest.

He should wear one of those "flak jacket" type of rib protectors that some QB's wear for maybe a week or a couple. Hate to see him get hit in the same spot and make it worse.

Yeah I'm anxious to see that play again. It looked to me that the Giants may have purposely piled on a bit, possibly with the intent of removing Rainey from the remainder of the game. In other words I think that was a deliberate cheap shot put on because Rainey had been killing them all game.

Did anyone see what happened to him? I'd hate to suggest such a thing, but is it possible that Giants players "landed on him" intentionally to take him out of the game? I mean, I know it's possible, but did it look as though that was the case?

Well, I guess I should have read all the responses as mine is inline with Zulater's.

It looked like a deliberate spear with the helmet after Rainey was down. Should've been a personal foul.

That should be a fine.

Not if it was inflicted on a Steelers player.

Let me see it in real-time before I make a judgment.

The issue here is how soon before the Ref blew the whistle. Here's the two rules:

Article 6: Unnecessary Roughness (h) using any part of a player's helmet (including the top/crown and the forehead/"hairline" parts) or facemask to butt, spear, or ram an opponent violently or unnecessarily.

Article 14: Piling On. No player shall fall upon any prostrate player (other than the runner), or upon a runner after the ball is dead.
Penalty: For piling on: Loss of 15 yards and an automatic First Down.
Note: An official should prevent piling on a prostrate or helpless runner before the ball is dead. When opponents in close proximity to such a runner are about to pile on, and further advance is improbable, the covering official should sound his whistle for a dead ball, in order to prevent further play and roughness. See 7-2-1-b

In the first rule, it has to be determined that it was either "violent" or "unnecessary." For the second rule, the question is when the whistle was blown. However, according to the rules, the whistle SHOULD have been blown already.

With that said, and after reading through both rules a few times, unless the real time video shows something very different, this play should have been flagged. I cannot however, see in the rules where this play is reviewable by the commissioner for a fine. Other rules specifically say that it is allowed.

That should be a fine.

See the above post. Unless I'm missing something, it can't be fined. I hope I'm wrong.
