View Full Version : Troy's Calf Hurt Again!

Mod, this isn't a "Game Day" posting.

If he hurt it this bad this early in the game, he has to be more than a muscle injury in his calf.

Well, you had a more substantive post this time. The first one looked like a gameday thread post. To the point of the thread, it looks like Troy is breaking down. He's going to be forced to retire either at the end of this year or next, I think.

I think this will be his final year.

I think this is his last year in the B&G as well.

I don't think he's been the same since late 2010. He even got hurt that year but he didn't play that well in the Super Bowl.

I think he is essentially done.

How sad.

Troy epitomizes to me what great football and great sportsmanship is all about.

I'm not sure he trained with his usual routine this year. He was at OTA's with the rookies instead on training in California.

That's right. He did it to show leadership after so many leaders retired, and it may have been costly for him. I've had calf injuries before, and I can tell you that it takes a good 4-6 weeks to heal properly. Troy was back after 3. There's your problem.

This has nothing to do with the strength and conditioning coach, he can't do anything to prevent a player from becoming injured, especially a player that plays with the reckless abandon that Troy Polamalu plays with.

Troy has hurt this same calf before. He's just becoming injury prone which happens at his age, especially with all the hits he's given and taken over the course of a 10 year Hall of Fame worthy career.

I hope that was a joke. You really think we'd do a thing like that?

To the point of the thread ... how many years have we all been saying "The way Troy plays, I'm amazed his body holds up; that's going to take its toll someday." Well, it looks like we're at someday. It shouldn't be surprising, even though it sucks.

I think some of you missed the point of my earlier post. I'm not looking Troy solely, I'm looking at the entire team. A lot of our players are getting small injuries and there little things. I bet that strength and condition plays some part of it, excluding Troy because he normally doesn't train with the team. Players who are in better shape tend not to get hurt as much. I'm not talking about major injuries like torn ligaments, but strained and pulled muscles.

I'm not a draftnik, but who are the hot prospects at safety this year? We gotta draft soon, else we won't have Troy to mentor the new guys much longer.

And we all know Ryan Mundy isn't the answer.

There is NO ONE who can replace Troy ! That's just it, there is no safety ( strong safety) out there that plays the way Troy plays. You can't teach the way Troy plays, his style of play is born in him. He's one of a kind right now.

No not a joke, he is obviously at the end of his career why would we keep his contract if we are not gonna get the performance? Our secondary is gonna need some playmakers and we could trade him while he still has value.

I'd be shocked if you got anything more than a 4th rounder for him. ( No that they'd ever consider trading him, because they wont) That the Steelers would trade him would send up and immediate red flag around the league, and given his recent injury history who would gamble any significant draft pick on a player at that cap price who isn't even immersed in your defense?

I'm not talking about major injuries like torn ligaments, but strained and pulled muscles.I'm not convinced it's a simple muscle injury. Muscle injuries do not last that many months. Especially with all the rehab resources a Professional player has.

Injuries are usually downplayed (especially by Troy). I wouldn't be surprised if he had an underlying stress fracture in his lower leg.

It definitely shows we need to look to both the draft and probably free agency as well for our next safety or safeties (Clark is no spring chicken either).

Unfortunately, there is no replacement for Troy...he was one of a kind.

wow... all I just read on comments was Troys Done...Retire?? Lol... are you guys kidding me...He has an injury shit I dont care if it takes til next year to rehab...If and I know this is an IF...but If he can come back at 75 percent he would still be the best Safety in the game period... The guy might be the best football player I ever seen and you guys think its time for him to retire... Shit I hope not... Im thinking he can get us another 2 or 3 years...at least Im praying he can... With Troy we are superbowl Contenders..without Im not so sure we have a shot in hell until we replace him... on this years roster there is no replacement so lets just hope he finds a way to get healthy by the end of the year

His body is beat up and is breaking down. Eventually he is going to retire, and it'll be in less than 2 or 3 years. The fact that he got 10 years out of his style of play is amazing in itself, but after a while, it takes its toll.

He's not helping us when he's constantly sidelined with injuries. The fact is, he is hurt more than he plays at this point.

I don't think we'd get much for him. Veteran players with a year or two left, you usually trade just to unload them, and the other team won't give you much because it's understood they're taking a flyer and seeing if he has anything left. |Nobody will give you more than a fifth-round draft pick or something. I don't think that's really going to help us move the needle.

Doesn't the injury history hint that this has been pretty typical of his career and not the end of it?

He's not helping us when he's constantly sidelined with injuries. The fact is, he is hurt more than he plays at this point.

Kind of like A. Smith was the last two or three years of his career. Although not quite to the same extent. Instead of having a season-ending injury, he picks up these nagging things and limps through most of the year. Which hurts us just as much if not more, because we're always stuck halfway, expecting him to be back at 100% in a couple weeks and continuing to base our entire scheme around it.

At this point, we need to stop the wishful thinking. Plan things around the idea that we're not going to have a healthy Troy in the lineup, and any time we do get that, it's a bonus.

steelreserve
10-08-2012, 01:09 PM
Doesn't the injury history hint that this has been pretty typical of his career and not the end of it?

Difference is, up until about 2008, he would be on the injury report and play anyway, and still kick ass every day. It was really starting with that 2009 season (when he hurt his knee against the Titans in the season opener) that he would miss several weeks, be noticeably less effective, and kind of struggle through the season with injuries.

Count Steeler
10-08-2012, 02:29 PM
He is definitely in the twilight of his career. Injuries take longer and longer to heal.

I have been saying for a while that we need to look at our conditioning. Thankfully, our O Line has been pretty good since the first week.

Woodley and the hammy, is this the same as last year or is it his other leg? Again, is this conditioning?

Look injuries are a fact of life in the NFL and, like it has been said there are no replacements for Troy a player like him comes around like maybe once in 25-30 years. alet's just hope he can recover and, be back in the coming weeks.

i hope troy does have micro tears in his galf that takes a few months to heal, but i agree this might be his last or next to last year. to be hoinest i really like the kid golden i just wish they would see what he is made of NOW! as for SS in the 2013 draft I like thus far T.J. McDonald he can play both safety positions which is always a plus with coach T then there is Kenny Vaccaro he is growing on me got to watch a Texas game i was impressed with his ST play as well.

I say again, this has to be more than a simple muscular injury.

I wouldn't be surprised to find out he has a stress fracture.

a stress fracture? i doubt troy would be able to move explosively enough to hurt/reaggravate his calf if he had a stress fracture
