The problem is our backups are just not that good. You take the playmakers off the field like Harrison and Polamalu, and the guys that are replacing them just aren't good. I am not asking for them to be All-Pro's waiting in the wings, but our backup OLB and our backup SS aren't even average players, they are below average.

I know that there is no replacing Polamalu, he's a one-of-a-kind type of player. But our backup at that position is not good at all. Our backup OLB can't rush the passer, and if you can't rush the passer in the 3-4 then you're fucking useless.

I do blame LeBeau a bit because he's responsible for this unit. And maybe it's time for him to walk away and retire, as much as it kills me to say that. Maybe it's time for a new voice. But in the end, you can only work with what you have, and when you don't have two All-Pro players, it does take it's toll on a defense.

I could be proven completely wrong over the course of the next few seasons, but as it stands now, it looks like we've had some real swings and misses on the positions that are supposed to be getting the pressure up front. We haven't had a productive LB come out of the draft in several tries since Timmons and Woodley, and unless something changes, we haven't drafted a good defensive lineman in about 10 years.

Hell, unless Allen turns out to be as good as I hope, then besides Timmons and Woodley, we may not have drafted a good defensive PLAYER in 10 years. Think about that for a second.

I think there is more to it than blaming personnel. A lot has been the scheming and perhaps predictability.

As Steeldude said a few weeks ago, step on their necks and choke the life out of them for 60 minutes.

I am of the belief that we do not suck and these problems will be fixed.
