Rex Ryan drew the comparison between LaRon Landry and Troy Polamalu because they are two safeties who, he feels, successfully avoid being pigeonholed as a box safety or a free safety.

Ryan thinks one could say the same thing about Eric Smith and Yeremiah Bell as well, all of whom were considered strong safeties when the year began.

"They say the same thing about all three of our safeties," Ryan said. "When you look at their body types, they all look more like linebackers than they do defensive backs. They're all three big dudes, that's the first thing.

"But you can't say he can't run, Landry ran a 4.3. He checks that box. You can say the same thing about Troy Polamalu -- he's a great safety, period. It doesn't matter if he's playing man coverage, zone coverage, playing the post or jumping over the center like he does. And for me, I just take the great football player. Troy Polamalu is a great football player. LaRon Landry is a great football player."

Ryan went on to speak about Landry's on-field presence -- borrowing the term "badass" -- and said that when the team looked at their needs this offseason a knockout hitter was on the list.

"He's a physical presence, there is no question about it and Yeremiah Bell is the same way," Ryan said. "When Smitty gets healthy we'd like to think we have three of the most physical safeties in the game."

Ryan said that Landry reminds him the most of Dick "Night Train" Lane, widely considered one of the league's most feared hitter of all time. Here are some highlights, you decide...
