If life was fair, John Clay would be suiting up for the Steelers and be a key contributor.
But as Clay, the former Park High School and University of Wisconsin star running back, rudely discovered several weeks ago, life in the NFL is anything but fair.
In an Aug. 12 practice – just three days after the Steelers’ first preseason game — Clay’s hopes of having a breakthrough season stalled as he tore his right quadriceps.
“I caught a pass on a flat route and (Steelers safety) Ryan Mundy collided with me,” Clay said. “I had my weight planted on my right leg and I felt my quad pop.
“It was just a freak thing.”
It was also a horrible thing. After signing with the Steelers as an undrafted rookie free agent last season, Clay made significant strides toward proving he was an NFL-caliber player.
