The Steelers selected two players to serve as team captains for the 2012 season, the team announced through a vote of their teammates today.

Quarterback Ben Roethlisberger (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/ben-roethlisberger/54dda34e-9e43-4c57-9397-1143ddced5d6/) will serve as the offensive captain, while defensive end Brett Keisel (http://www.steelersuniverse.com/team/roster/brett-keisel/e07c42f5-62cd-4b07-828f-1d192885b0c0/) will serve as the defensive captain. Roethlisberger has been selected as an offensive captain for the fourth time in his career (2008, ’09, ’11, ’12). This marks Keisel’s first selection as a captain.

The Steelers did not select a special teams captain for 2012........read more @ http://www.steelers.com/news/article-1/Steelers-Name-Two-Team-Captains/87f281b7-eca2-4bfe-ad55-76f6bbcd821f

But the rest of his teammates hate him. It must have been fixed. Somebody count the hanging chads.

Easy choices. It also may be telling of lack of leadership on this team. It's like "nobody stepped up, so give it to the old men." That is pure speculation, but I haven't seen a clear outspoken leader. I'd love to see someone like Timmons/Hood/Pouncey/Colon step up to get the guys juiced. But since none of them is, Big Ben and Diesel get it. I would love to see a Ray Lewis like personality emerge for us...

I seriously think that you will see Pouncy take a more proactive leadership role this season. He kind of did it last year by telling the coaches that Gilbert would be a good pick (not sure if he was asked or told them but eitherway) and then got on Gilbert when he showed to camp over weight. Pouncy just seems like the type of individual that would step up and fill a leadership role.

It wasn't steelerhaters . . . it was Steeler fans who still weren't sold on Ben after the 2007 season. Of course, later quotes from Batch, among others, actually confirmed that it was somewhat true. Batch had a face-to-face meeting with Ben, and that was what started Ben hanging out with his O-line. From there, he grew into a true leader.

And that wasn't even replacement refs. Maybe too much turkey, that was on Thanksgiving.

Maybe you weren't around SF back in 2007-09. But there were a number of threads about how Ben wasn't a captain because he didn't have the respect of his teammates. Ask FS, he probably had to close half of them.

And stats, all the stats, and nothing but the stats proved it! I mean, come on. I utilize stats quite a bit, but they only help tell the story. They don't actually mean a single thing by themselves.

As far as Ben actually saying what it was claimed to a child, I'm 50/50. I had friends that were Potsie's cousin. They would relate stories about Ben as well that were in the same arena (being a jackass). But it's neither here nor there now. The man's grown up and good for him.

I did however, find the person we can blame for all of the problem Ben has been through with women over the last few years. Check this out:

So you're calling me a liar? And by extension you're calling my cousin, my aunt, and my uncle who all heard this exchange liars too?

Fine by me. He said it and it was heard by other people. You can choose to believe what you want, but the guy is a prick and hell will freeze over before I root for someone who talks to someone else's kids that way.

i don't care what BR says to any kid. he is here to play football and win games. he isn't playing QB for the steelers to sign autographs or take care of kids. it's not like he is taking drugs, beating his wife, raping women etc...

now of course i would prefer him to be polite to fans, but if he isn't, who really cares?

(bold mine)

I blame Steeldude for bringing the whole debate/discussion/did he or didn't he crap on us! It's all your fault, Steeldude. ALL YOURS!

As far as Ben actually saying what it was claimed to a child, I'm 50/50.

Considering the source (a guy who once publicly admitted to frequenting SF solely to stir up shit as a way to "blow off steam"), I found the claim of telling an 11-year-old child to eff off, particularly in front of a bunch of other fans, to be highly dubious at best.

If Ben didn't want to sign autographs, it seems to me he would have completely avoided the crowd the kid was part of (which was assembled for the express purpose of getting players' autographs) to begin with.

On the info itself, I'm still 50/50. However, since it was Jeremy. . . :chuckle:

Either way, I think it's telling how much Ben grew up since then. There's no doubt that he has a few issues with his teammates - as Batch has testified to. But makes me more impressed, is that Ben has shown that he can change, and evolve into a better person all the way around. I think that's part of the reason why we're never out of games anymore. He says, "enough of this crap," and his guys listen to him because he's taken the time to actually become a team guy, and also an O'line guy. Then they go out and put up seven or fourteen points to win games.

Think back to our previous QB's, and really, that leadership skill has been lacking. I think Tom "Tommy squirt-gun" Maddox had a bit of it. Maybe Neil O'donnel as well. But probably not since Bradshaw has there been a real team leader at the QB spot.
