President Barack Obama was today forced to announce he will fly to storm-hit Louisiana on Monday – hours after Mitt Romney beat him to the punch by deciding to head there this afternoon.
After it emerged that Obama was still taking time to fit in a campaign stop in Cleveland, Ohio, before checking out how clean-up operations are proceeding in the Bayou state, the Obama campaign abruptly cancelled that event, though he will still hold a rally in Toledo, Ohio before heading south.

But the Republican presidential candidate touched down in the Hurricane ravaged state this afternoon - a full three days before Obama - touring the flooded areas around Lafitte and showing his support for local residents.

Honestly, I would rather these guys not show up in disaster areas. All they do is get in the way because of all the security they need.

When I got back to my office in New Orleans after Katrina , there was a companywide email in my inbox from a few weeks earlier. It had instructions for those of us who were coming to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity on the day W was going there. People had to show up at some kind of ridiculous time like 4 am, all so W could come by the site.

Just fly over, DON'T snap a photo of yourself looking out the window, and keep in touch with the state and local authorities until the cleanup is mostly done.

Bingo. At least for the actual work.

For the others, it's a "leadership function." I mean, it's impossible to care unless you fly there and see it for yourself, never mind the fact that you're getting in everyone's way.

He's damned if he goes - - he's damned if he doesn't go... They all are left with no real choice... There is no pleasing anyone......

VIP's do add another level of stress and distress to affected areas - - but their appearances do help to cheer up some of the victims....

It's too late for that. They HAVE to now. Actually, they don't, but they do...

If the disaster is a place where people clean up their own mess, and take pride in the ownership of their property, you're allowed to skip the visit. However, if the majority of the people effected are on the dole and thereby deemed dependent on the government, one must show up and walk the site...otherwise that official might hear things like "Bush hate black people".
